Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

It looks intersting, was surprised to see the ibook go G4. I think the best thing about the whole update is that the lowend model now has a slot loading combo drive to make it a much better buy in my opinion. Could we see G5's in the powerbooks by later next year is what i'm wondering now with this update.

Tired of ads?

Exactly.

What I'm stuck between right now is getting that perfect balance of performance, screen size and price in a portable.

Right now, the 14" 1GHz iBook is great as far as the price and screen size, but of course iBooks don't have G5s yet and likely won't get them for at least another year.

On the Powerbook line, about the most I can afford right now is the 12 inch model. I would like to see a G5 update for the Powerbooks and a price drop, so at least I might be able to afford a 15" model with a G5 processor! Sweet!

Of course, the G4 iBooks are basically G3s with some kind of kick up, but it's still cool that they're classified as G4s now.

Hooray, now we're only 3 years behind PC laptop performance instead of 4.

How typical of a Mac basher to say such things.

And the gap is only going to close even faster now, Ash Mash!

I don't think so. It'll be a while before G5s enter the scene.

Intel's successor to the Centrino is a few short months away. 2GHz (Centrino tops out at 1.7 right now), more efficient innards, doubled the L2 cache to 2MB full-speed (G4 has 256KB of full-speed).

Apple needs to play catchup quite fast. Exploding opularity of Centrino laptops with extremely long battery lifes, low weight, small size, and high performance can't be good for Apple's aging G4-based laptops.

To give you a vague idea just how uncompetitive the G4 chips are in performance:

SPECint2000:
G4 1GHz: 306
Centrino 1GHz: 673

SPECfp2000:
G4 1GHz: 187
Centrino 1GHz: 547

Keep in mind that Centrino hits 1.7GHz right now, and performance will be even higher per-clock while hitting 2GHz with twice the cache in a few months.

Did I mention that the Centrino uses 33% of the power of the G4?

Nice sig, Cloud9, but I don't understand what the point of it is. If huge, obvious bugs slip through beta testing, the company has crap beta testing techniques. Period.

I'd love to see your response to the SPEC benchmarks. You can no longer say SPEC means nothing, unless you call Apple a liar, since they say:
quote:
The SPEC CPU2000 benchmark suite comprises four metrics — SPECint_base2000, SPECfp_base2000, SPECint_rate_base2000, and SPECfp_rate_base2000 — to represent different performance characteristics of the system.

SPECint_base2000 and SPECfp_base2000 measure the speed of a single task — either an integer calculation or a floating-point calculation — executing on a single processor. Each test measures how long the processor takes to complete the benchmark set of single tasks.

That icon is fitting, because I can see -- in no way -- how that gap is doing anything but growing.

Wanna prove to me how Apple plans to beat a 2GHz Centrino with 2MB cache, or a mobile 3.4GHz Prescott with hyperthreading?

Forget the technicalities. I'm focusing on the business side of things.

No, what you're doing is you're sinking in piles of bullshit that you spew and have no idea what to do next.

My comment was purely about its performance, and your comment was the "gap was closing", obviously the context is performance and not business.

The technicalities are too complicated for my understanding. I get the basics, but the complicated mathematical stuff is way over my head, so their is no point in arguing it that way. Sorry Ash. I know you want to, but. . .

So the solution is not to reply to the technicalities post rather than feigning understanding and displaying remarkable ignorance.

No, the idea is to look at the market today, note Apple's position in it, and then envision Apple's bright future ahead of it!

Market today: Declining computer marketshare already statistically insignificant, falling profits, slow computers?

I'm not sure what bright future you pull out of that.

Someone hasn't been paying enough attention to the Apple headlines recently.

I recommend that you read the news and rumor reports on Macrumors.com for all your Mac news and rumors. I've been following this site for more than a year now and I can tell you it's an honest site; it even has a section for rumors that are less reliable. The site collects rumors from thousands of credible Mac rumor sites around the web. Most of the rumors that surface here are quite accurate. And you'll most likely hear about Mac news and rumors from Macrumors first than from any other site on the web.
