2nd try, the first one (with smilies) vanished...
Tale of the Years 1824 to 1834
1824 Built Palace in Stuttgart 192G. Adjusted cities per City-Planner chart. Changed taxrate to 60-0-40 per Foreign Minister (Special Celebration Project). Also adjusted Workers to induce Celebration in reluctant cities. Kill German Cannon at Mpondo. Kill Zulu Rifle at Zimbabwe. Moved many units to shield-starve Zimbabwe per SMC plan. 2 shield-squares cannot be occupied. Find Greek Genoa 3 squares east of Stittgart. Kill a Greek Settler with Cavalry.
1826 Zulu becomes Republic. Greeks get Explosives from Germans. Stuttgart is new capital of Apolyton Imperium and becomes unbribable. Find Greek Crete ENE of Shield. Get another Zimbabwe shield square occupied and fortify all adjacent units. Capture Barb Leader for 150G. Establish city of Obiwan on American river system. Kill 2 Greek Dragoons at Apolonia with 2 Cavalry, both get Vet. Kill Zulu Dragoon leaving Bapedi with a Cavalry. Moving escorted Dips toward outlying Zulu cities. Laid a few ambushes for wandering Barb Crusaders.
1828 American Musk dies attacking our Mountain Cavalry. Greeks get Magnetism from Germans. Barbs land near Ore. Zulu get Medicine from Russians. Russians sneak attack Outpost and kill our new Alpine unit. Zulus get Explosives from Greeks.Greeks get Trade from Zulus. Americans get Magnetism from Germans. Germans mount major attack on Mpondo. Cannon kills Russian Dragoon at Outpost. Alpine explorer finds Greek city Artemesium east of Argos. Bribe Barb Crusader 88G to save Dip. Cavalry kills Rifle from Bapedi. Bribe Greek Crete for 192G, get 6G back, start Fanatic, and fortify Cavalry. Barbs near Ore look like stacked Dragoons. Ore has 2 Rifle and 1 Vet Cannon, so I move a Dip and Cavalry into the city. I think I have all the Zimbabwe shield-squares occupied now.
1830 Greeks get Democracy from Zulu. Zulu get Magnetisn from Greeks. Barb Dragoon kills an Engineer. Germans discover Tactics (see how long we would have had to wait to steal it?). 2 Germans Dragoons die atacking Mpondo. Its time time to attack Zimbabwe, they must have lost a few units by now and we have lots of Cannons on RR. It costs only 3 Cannon to capture Zimbabwe! We get 51G, Copernicus and Great Wall, and City Walls stay up. Kill a Zulu Settler with Cannon. Kill German Dragoon south of Zimbabwe with a Cavalry. Kill German Cannon at Mpondo with Cavalry; kill 2nd Cannon with same Cavalry. Kill Russian Dragoon near Rhodes with Cavalry and get Vet. Find Greek Cunaxa 9 ESE of Rhodes. Establish Vetkovia on American river system. Establish Atawatacity on American river syatem. Kill Barb Dragoon at Ore with Cannon. Kill 2 Barb units at Ore with Cannon. We are gaining over 1300G per turn now. Rush Dip in Stuttgart to bribe Greek Genoa.
1832 American Dragoon dies attacking Cavalry near Bombay, Cavalry gets Vet. Greek Rifle dies attacking Cavalry somewhere. Another Barb group nears Ore. Bribe Greek Genoa for 357G, get 11G back, sell Aqueduct for 80G (size 2 city). Move Fanatic and Rifle into Genoa. Find American San Diego 10 squares NE of Bombay. Our Cavalry kills an Engineer there (blocking movement), gets Vet. Find Zulu Intombe and bribe it for 174G, get 32G back. Alpine explorer kills German Engineer. Alpine explorer finds Greek city Troy 8 squares southeast of Rhodes.
1834 Greek govt overthrown, Barb Dragoon dies attacking Ore, our Rifle gets Vet. 2nd Barb Dragoon at Ore kills Rifle. Cannon kills last Barb at Ore. Bribe Hlobane 456G, get 44G back, sell Granary 60G, start Temple. Bribe Tugela 385G, get 19G back. The Zulu civ is destroyed by the Apolyton Imperium! Kill German Cannon near Bombay. Destroy San Diego with Cavalry attack (those 2 moves really make a difference!), get 3G back. Alpine explorer kills German Dip.We are gaining 1475G per turn now!

A few questions and requests though...
- Can you give a more detailed description of the battle for Zimbabwae? (Three cannon were lost...how many Zulu defenders were left? The city walls were left intact, any other improvements?) |
There seemed to be 2 Rifle and an Archer left in Zimbabwe when we attacked. It appears they lost a Rifle and a Phalanx (Pikesmen?) from shield deprivation. I attacked when I guessed that they had balanced their remaining available shields with the remaining units.
Zimbabwe retained City Walls, Barracks, Colosseum, and Library (plus Copernicus and GW) after we took it over. I immediately started a Temple in order to indoctrinate the Zimbabwe citizens in our glorious way of life.
quote: - Any progress towards Pharsalos? (I am trying to find it on the posted maps, but it appears to still be hidden...are any units at least advancing towards it?) |
I did not attempt a search for Pharsalos this session. I think that would be a search for "El Dorado" at this time, and that we could not hold it if we subverted it. We are, however, sending escorted Dips to that edge of the Greek empire with the taking (and successful defense) of Pharsalos high on our priority list. My guess is that the ability to take and hold Pharsalos will be the first great success of the next administration.
quote: - We have 4 active Alipine troops, are they uncovering some of the hidden lands? |
3 Alpine trrops have made great inroads into formerly unexplored territory, and have revealed a few new enemy cities to our consideration. Without going through the list of cities one-by-one, I think the 4th Alpine is just developed and waiting to head out into the world.
quote: - The Germans completed Tactics and are now researching _________ ? (hopefully something we don't yet have ) |
The Germans are not currently researching anything. I expect that means they have just gotten Tactics and will choose a new tech next turn.
quote: - Did any of the Minister of War's plans involve attacking Bombay? (as I find it embarrassing that this city has escaped joining the Apolyton Imperium for so long) |
The Minister of War did not suggest an immediate strategy for taking Bombay, as indeed there was no possibility of it this session. He is completely blameless in this, and the fault of that is entirely mine. In the previous session (1806), we could have bribed an American unit and then bribed Bombay, but I thought I saw a way to slip past the unit and save the unit-bribe money. My idea failed, and I now consider it the single worst blunder of my administration.
The blood and toil, gold and shields that it will take to overcome my error will stain my hands and heart for many turns to come. I had greatly hoped that it would be possible to take Bombay during my administration to make recompense for the error, but I see now that it will not be possible.
I will salute the next President when he takes Bombay and ends my embarrassment on this matter!
quote: - Any chance of another map screen shot of the German territory? |
We don't know much about the German territory, but I will post a screenshot of what little we know.
quote: One last thought...would it be worth entering a cease fire or peace treaty with the Americans and Greeks? (Since both are in democracy and "Receptive" towards us) My thought on this is that with our improving reputation they are more likely to enter a cease fire with us, and knowing the AI, they are likey to sneak attack a couple of turns later. Perhaps this is a way to bring down their democracy...and change them into a form of government more succeptible to our diplomats? (I would like to see a poll of this, but I am but a lowly citizen) |
I don't think a cease-fire with the Americans or Greeks would benefit us. Essentially, they are not an offensive threat to us. It's the Germans who seem to be injecting their military into our fights with the other civs. A cease-fire with them *might* be helpful, but I doubt it would last very long.
I am sure that "peace treaties" with the Americans and Greeks are probably beyond hope. The Americans and Greeks are both allied with the Germans. Our reputation remains "dishonorable" probably because we keep bribing cities. I doubt it will improve even with the Eiffel Tower at this point.
If anyone has suggestions on improving our relations with any civ we are not actively attacking, I am open to them.
Good questions, Sparrowhawk. I have answered them as best I could.
