THE RELEASE DATES SYNDROME
By Markos Giannopoulos
August 8, 1998

note: this is the first article on The Column, a part of Apolyton where I and Dan write whatever we want :). Well, not just Dan and me. The Column is open to everyone. If you feel like writing submit your article to markg@gamestats.com

INTRO
The term 'release dates syndrome' is not mine. I don't know if anyone have used it before me, but for me it's origin is from the term 'ebworld syndrome', which I first heard from Kwang(Technical Advisor on Apolyton and co-owner of CivLeague) on the Multiplaying Forum of TFGC2S. According to Kwang the 'ebworld syndrome' was first noticed by scientists when ebword.com started posting release dates of StarCraft. The date changed every week making a lot of impatient players go nuts.

THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS A CURE...
I must admit I was addicted too. It began sometime in June, when I first discover a date for 'Ultimate Civ2' on OGR.COM. I was amazed by the fact that at last I had some idea on when MGE will go out. OGR then said(and I think it still does) July... :) And then I found ebworld. It said Jun 30, and everyone was sure about it. So I was happy... But as time went by, I started looking for other sites, and then ebworld changed it to August 12, and then to September 2 and then I found other sites saying either August or September(none October, yet). And then I gave up.

TRUST NOONE
...as Mulder would say. Dont take these dates seriously. Take it as a part of the truth, not the truth itself. Don't worry about when the game will go out. It will eventually(games do that, most times)...

I'M NOT ADDICTED!
On the other hand I've got a new source for you :). It's Chips&Bits. Besides prices they have release dates. So, they have CIV2:MGE coming on 8/98(yeah right!), SMAC on 11/98(Firaxis always told fall, so they are in), CIV:CTP on 2/99(Activision on the official Civ:CTP site says Christmas), and CIV2:TOT on 4/99(too good to be true?). Got your dose?
