The Civilization community has a voice. Apolyton Civilization Site Radio, or ACSR for short, is first and foremost a collection of audio shows that broadcast live on demand over the Internet with news, information and insight straight from the Apolyton News Room. Launched on July 16th, 2001, its shows are produced and/or edited -- and at most times shows are hosted by -- Apolyton CS Co-Owner/Webmaster Dan "DanQ" Quick. Many so-called 'Feature Clips' come from third-party sources and are re-produced in whole or in part here (and in audio only where applicable).

RealPlayer (Required Software) Since its outset, the show has utilizied the RealAudio technology developed by RealNetworks, produced using the company's RealProducer Plus -- and, for a brief time, Helix Producer Plus -- software and available for listening via the RealPlayer. The stream's quality was originally double that of the AM radio frequency, at 16kbps, that could accomodate Internet users with connections as slow as 28.8kbps; slower connections required buffering (downloading) segments of the broadcast before it began to play. In recognition of an increasing percentage of those still on dial-up connections now having a 56kbps capacity, coupled with the growing adoption of broadband access, the stream quality was increased to 20kbps as of March, 2004. Unlike streams that are delivered off of RealAudio servers, ACSR is not limited by a pre-set maximum number of users that can be serviced simultaneously. While there is a limit to what any server can handle, it has not yet been reached with ACSR.

The history of ACSR dates back to February, 2000 when in that month the first audio broadcast was posted on Apolyton under the title "Apolyton News". ACSR's flagship program, ACSR News, became the successor to "Apolyton News" as of ACSR's said launch date. "Apolyton News", also hosted by Quick, had a successful run from January-July, 2000 and then again from January-April, 2001. In response to the growing demand and interest in the 'station', ACSR launched ACSR Daily on July 29th, 2001 which offered the previous or most recent day's worth of news in audio format. ACSR News, which later morphed into ACSR Weekly, was cancelled in March 2002. Beginning in the same month, the staff of ACSR announced that the station would not broadcast during the months of April or December. Due to primarily technical difficulties, the station further remained silent for May, June and the first third of July. When it re-launched July 12th, 2002 with shows retroactive to July 8th, a further programming change was implemented. ACSR Daily became a weekday entity while weekend coverage, compiled into a single show airing the following Monday, fell under the ACSR Weekend banner. The first-run of ACSR Mailbag was officially cancelled in July 2002, but only four editions were produced in all: they were for and were released in March of 2002.

Due to increasing time demands by station staff in non-site matters, the most previous run of ACSR Daily ended its third production run with a September 13th, 2002 edition. ACSR Weekend's second production run ended at approximately the same time with a September 14th, 2002 edition. Both programs were renewed for the May-August, 2003 season in the same said capacities and -- for the first time -- granted an eleventh-hour extension into September 2003 as well. An unprecedented order for more editions of these two shows was further granted into October 2003 near the end of the preceding month. The season was extended yet again, this time for two months worth of new editions of the said programs, in late October. Less of a surprise was the second two-month production order that came on New Year's Day, 2004, but what followed was unexpected. The first formal opinion poll put to Apolyton's registered forum users about the station's broadcast schedule in early February revealed popular opinion opting for the Weekend show to continue and to cancel the Daily edition; however, many comments accompanying that vote asked for Weekend broadcasts to encompass the previous seven days' worth of news and not just Saturday's and Sunday's. In response, the last Daily and Weekend broadcasts came on February 28th, 2004 and March 1, 2004 respectively. Daily was retired while ACSR Weekend was rebranded ACSR Weekly, a label discarded nearly two years prior. Its first edition came on and for March 7th, 2004. This and subsequent editions are available for listening live-on-demand. This series is continuing its run, entering its second season as of the March 6th, 2005 broadcast.

ACSR Weekly is by far the longest running in ACSR's four year history. More than 60 shows have been produced so far. Beginning in September 2005, ACSR Mailbag is being resurrected and given a second chance at digital life. If you have a comment/question about our programming, would like to submit a clip or perhaps wish to suggest/offer assistance to produce a current or future show, please email DanQ.
