GAMERS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN The Collective Counterstrike of a Veteran Gamer By Frank Johnson August 28, 1999 note: This is The Column, a part of Apolyton where primarily Markos and Dan write whatever they want :). Well, not just the two of them. The Column is open to everyone. If you feel like writing, submit your article to civilization@apolyton.net
However, I am not a member of a company, being a sixteen year old internet/gaming junky. I can stand from an unbiased point of view and confidently say that the game producing world needs our help desparately. The companies are stupid because they are so easily manipulated by money, have little will power, they also have the warped concept that gamers should buy a game that is no better or worse than the last one. I think these expectations spring from ignorance. I mean when's the last time they had to PAY to get theor own game? It simply isn't smart to waste good money on bad games. We simply don't have any fun playing $40+ for a game that crashes your computer constantly and is full of unnoticed bugs to be turned into cheats. The best thing a gamer can do is to find the best game, with the best support, that works on the most systems, that they will have the most fun with for the money. That is the way of the gamer. A gamer is always the slave of these internal desires. If you want to blame something for our ways, blame Capitalism. There are so many game companies today, with so many choices, I simply can't afford all the games! Thus, I must find a way to get the best game for my money, because I can't have all the games. Capitalism is also to blame for another bug-bear amongst us gamers. Hardware problems. Microsoft tries night and day to make sure our software works only with their ownsoftware, however those annoying anti-trust laws stop them everytime! Darn! If everybody was forced to have a computer with similar specifications Bill Gates rival God in power. That is why God desended on this computer age "Tower of Babil" and confused the code of the computer kingdoms. It seems to me that the majority of companies with websites simply use their forums for stealing good ideas. We come to those forums to allow the free flow of information. But the majority of posts are just ignored, or stolen as the companies own work. This is an abuse of the forums. This endless non-crediting of gamers for their valueable help has caused us to grow weary of their hypocracy. What used to be gamer's sacred territory, where companies lurked, but dare not post is now a treasure hunt, to fool all the gamers into helping them design a game, then drop a bug ridden lemon on them. With all the advertising, and pretending to use gamers to help create a great game, companies are hoping to convince gamers that bad games are good. We have done some deduction work, they cannot be members of a company, this is due to the intelligence of their plots to steal good ideas from gamers. They must be rival gamers, trying to cash in on the rest of us so they can buy the better games. The companies are like incredably overweight people. They are so fat, they can't lift a finger to fix their bug ridden games, but they still want you to pay for their movie tickets, and they want a seat just for them that their big, ignorant, lazy, hypocritical butts can wallow in. I therefore ask why should we be concerned with the companies? Because they used to be gamers too. Somewhere deep inside they have to remember that they started making games because they were fun, not because they could make an easy buck off them. They must save their reputations before some people with heart and conviction put them out of business. God save the games!
