From: "Apolyton Announcements (Apolyton Civilization Site)"
Subject: Apolyton&Friends News 3-9/September/99
Greetings everyone,
these are the news of the week(3-9/September),
On Apolyton, it was a bit slow week, with two significant news only: the
possible use of SMAC as the base for Civ3(if it's good don't make it all
over again?)
and the release of the entries for the second civ2 Scenario Design Contest
on HAC
Btw, allow me to make a call for The Column. If you've been reading the
Column regurarily(or not so regurarily) and would like to write an article
yourself, you can submit one through Column Submission page(who thought of
that name?)
In the "Friends" part of the newsletter, news from Mr Temba's
Civilization, Fantastic Worlds: Jorrit's Civilization II Site and Dustin
Dunn's Civ2 Site. If you have a civ2, ctp or smac site and want your news
included here, mail Dustin Dunn at dustind@home.com
And now, in detail

SMAC ENGINE UNDER CIV3?
(September 3rd, 1999) Hot news from Sidgames: Whistler asked Microprose on
their involvement in Civ3 and the response was
"I am not sure what the official company line is. I believe that this will
be a Sid/Brian project which will be tested and released by
Microprose/Hasbro. There have been lots of ideas bandied about between
both sides but ultimately Sid is the designer and will make final
decisions. I believe that the engine is supposed to be a modification of
the AC engine but that could change. That's about all I know at this time."
A modification of the AC engine??

REGAINING SOME GROUND
(September 7, 1999) A certain Civilization title is back in the Top Ten
listing for PC Games for the week of August 15-21, according to data
collected and released by PCData today.
With a listed price of $28US, Civilization II: Test of Time took the #9
spot for the aforementioned period, just ahead of Microsoft Flight
Simulator, and hot on the heels of Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2. This just
goes to show that even with stiff competition from a newer and greater
variety of games than was to be had even a year ago, let alone three,
there is still a steady demand for a quick fix of CivII.
THE COLUMN: A BUBBA'S EYE RATES SMAC(Part I)
Roger Oepkes writes about the successes of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
THE COLUMN: WAR AND CIVILIZATION
David Emery is looking to strike a chord between reality and simplicity in
gaming.
