Well, it's morning and I haven't been burned out yet.

There is alot of burned areas near my house with white smoke coming off of it but no open flame or black smoke. The nearest open flame is 4-5 miles away. Last night the fire crews came and lit back fires to create fire breaks so I didn't sleep much.

Dashi: This area isn't a national forest so it wouldn't have been effected by Bush's tree clearing plan. Scripps used to be a ranch owned by the Scripps-Davis family who sold about 90% of it in the 1970's and the land got subdivided into large estate lots which people built homes upon. The Scripps family bilieved that by planting shade trees the grasses wouldn't dry out as fast and there cattle would be able to graze for more of the year so they planteds thousands of Eucalyptus trees (which grow well in this climate) in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. When the area was developed most of the forest areas got saved as open spaces and are used by horse back riders, mountain bikers, and hikers.

Oerdin,

Glad to hear you're safe and your house isn't a pile of ash.

Some good advice in the early going: homeowner's insurance policy + pictures was a great one.

Bidet? What's that?

Everyone: I went on a walk about to survey the burned out area. I used my mountain bike because the cops have most of the roads blocked but I can bipass the road blocks if I use the dirt trails. USIU (the small private University near my house) actually only had a few dorm buildings burn down. The The Marine Corp Air Base at Miramar suffered a lot of fire damage and a few of the aircraft hangers were actually destroyed; all of the undeveloped open space has been burned as was Camp Kerney (the large Army Reserve base off of I15). Much of easter and north Scripps is still on fire but the fire is moving away from my house.

Currently the fire is 50% contained but the Santa Anna winds are picking up again so things could take a turn for the worse rapidly.

BTW more information has become available as to what started the three big fires in San Diego county (I still don't know what started the other fires in California). One was an arson, one was started by campers who didn't put out their camp fire correctly, and the fire by my house (They're calling it "the Cider fire") was accidentally started by some poor white trash hunter. Previously, they thought it was the Cedar fire was the work of an arsonist but it turns out some guy was illegally deer hunting, got drunk (Why do idiots with guns always get drunk?), got lost, and then thought he'd fire a signal flair. Why on Earth someone who's drunk and illegally hunting would want to fire a signal flair I have no idea but this moron did.

Any way, this idiot fired his signal flair right into a tree which then caught on fire. This guy then wondered around until he found his truck then simply drove home without calling the fire department; luckily someone saw his truck fleeing from the burning area and they wrote down his car's plate number. The idiot cunfessed to everything when the cops showed up and now wants to tell everyone who's homes he burned down that he's sorry.

I live in the South Bay area so I am not in any areas that can burn down. There is a lot of haze in the sky and is blocking some of the sunlight. Also there is ash falling even here, allthough it is not that much.

I dont know about where you other guys are, but over here, the smoke is ten times thicker then yesterday. Going outside makes me cough. The only safe place is in my room, and I've got a fan going at full speed. The common area also has a smokey smell to it because it comes in from under our three doors.

Most of the flights into and out of southern California have been cancelled due to the extreme smoke and ash creating low visability conditions. I still see the occational Cessna flying so it must just be the commercial airlines have a take no chances with safety approach while the small guys land or take off as they please.

Ok, you're a newbie. We had the poly meet last summer so you weren't living here. La Jolla is nice but you need to drive around and check the rest of the city out because unlike other cities San Diego has many very distinct parts to it and going from one section to another is almost like going to a whole other city. Plus we have a HUGE amount of protected park land in the county. National forests, state parks, country parks, game preserves, open space preserves and stuff like that which cover everything from beaches, to tidal lagoons, to the coastal plane, to the foothills, to the mountains, to the inland valleys, to the deserts.

According to the US Geological Survey San Diego county is the most ecologically diverse county in the US. We get 90 inches of rain per year in the Cuyamacas and less then 3 inches per year in some part of the Carrizo badlands and everything in between plus we have nearly half of southern California's remaining coastal wetlands and 1/3 of the remaining open grassland. This is a great place so make sure you get out and explore San Diego.

Do you leave near Tecolote Canyon right off of the 52 freeway? For a while they were afraid the fire would go through Scipps and Clairmonte then follow Tecolote Canyon all the way to La Jolla. That would have meant the fire would have burned everything from Ramona (in the mountains) to La Jolla (by the sea). Right now they're saying a total of 130,000 acress have burned and 180 houses are gone.

Well, we all passed through the night ok in Lakeside. Ash is covering my bf's car and it gets hard to breathe when you go outside. Hell, it's hard to breathe IN the house, even with the air conditioner off. THe sky is a bizarre shade of orange and grey. ...kinda like a perpetual sunset. It was nice to have a day off of work, even though i'm going to loose pay most likely.
It smells like a barbeque...so guess what the bf wanted last night for dinner? BBQ ribs.
I wonder if the roads will be open for people to get to work tomorrow. Any word?

DM: I just went up to 7-11 to buy some beer and I spent about 15 minutes talking to several police officers who'd been using the store as a stagging area. Apparently, the cops had arrested a half dozen hispanic men in their late teens last night for looting homes in the evacuated areas so now the cops have really clamped down hard in Scripps, Tierra Santa, Clairmonte, and the other areas effected by the fire.

I wouldn't bet upon the roads being reopened until this fire is put all the way out.
