LoA: Hell, you have nothing better to do so why not finish your home work?

The mayor is asking businesses to stay closed again tomorrow so that will be the fourth day of closures. I bet those strikers at Vons, Albertsons, and Ralphs are mad that a fire stole all of thier thunder. No one seems to care about the strikers now that something more interesting has come alone.

Glad to see you're okay.

About that photo -- did they overlay the fire sites on the image, or do fires actually show up as dark orange from orbit?

They are actual. They had some guy on the news describing them, and he said that the orange was actually seen.

He may be wrong, but that is what I heard.

They're drawn in squares on the 250 meter grids from the satellite image. Blow up the real images from the NASA site and you can see they're outlines.

You could certainly see the orange from nighttime satellite passes, or from higher res images, but not in daylight on 250 meter grids.

The weird clouds to my southwest look like they're clustered around the head of an undersea canyon in that general area, so presumably you have a lot of cold water come up and mix around with the shallower water.

THe smoke in the south bay is clearing now thanks to the offshore winds. IT is also getting colder other here.
I just hope that the firefighters can put out that fire in near 5 and 14 freeways. I heard that the weather around there will make it much easier for them to contain the fire.

Just checking in. My friend who lives in SD looked out; the fire had gotten to within a mile of where she lived before the winds shifted the other day.

On the last day of our trip we were up at the Grand Canyon when we started to see a huge column of smoke stretch across the horizon. Fortunately we didn't head back earlier as planned, as we would've arrived near SD around the time the I-8 was closed (the only major route between Phoenix and San D).
From 200 miles away we could see the smoke over the mountains. We're talking a huge mushroom-shaped cloud that was 3 times the height of the Rockies, w/o another cloud in the sky. And we were driving straight towards it. Yes, it was a little disconcerting.

It wasn't until we were a couple miles past Tecate that we saw the 1st signs of fire (we had to divert from I-8 to rt. 94). On the right: perfectly fine. On the left: hills for miles and miles were completely scorched and blackened. Only a handful of vegetation escaped the fire. The sun was in the sky at 3 pm, and it looked like twilight. We reached city limits about the time it was announced the town of Cuyamaca was wiped off the map.

Despite all that we got to her place okay. No problems getting around the city, other than being pitch black & needing a filter mask (which some exercise nuts apparently thought were unnecessary- we saw one moron jogging w/o a mask ). And my flight was on time. The initial flight delays weren't due to fire or smoke, but high winds.

Now we've got two fires burning here in Colorado. One is right near Jamestown where I know several people, and which has been evacuated. Several more close friends are under voluntary evacuation in Lefthand Canyon. I spent the weekend up there, I hope its not the last time. We had some very strong winds last night and today, and we haven't had a trace of moisture for over a month. It was also over 80 degrees farenheit today. This means that fire conditions were almost perfect. A cold front is moving in though, which will decrease the temps and winds while increasing the humidity. Hopefully they can get a grip on these fires once the wind settles down, because we have thousands of acres of bone dry pine trees that are ready to go up in an instant should they come into contact with flames.

I used to go fishing and hiking up by Cuyamaca. It kind of a scary thought to know that the town no longer exists and that those forests no longer exist.

They just put up a new ride as well.

Imagine something like a see-saw. But when you go down the see-saw you don't just go down, you slide down- over the edge.

I haven't been on either one. Not that I'm scared- well not too much anyways . hell, I think about dying everyday . I love scary rides. I just haven't found anyone to go up there with me.

Glad your OK, Oerdin.

I think the main problem is all of those damed Eucalyptus trees spreading like weeds over there, Eucalyptol in the leaves can burn at over 1500 degrees F! Get rid of those invasive plants and stop planting them in your gardens, damit!
