Bye bye IDS? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3221105.stm

Duncan Smith faces leadership vote

Iain Duncan Smith says he will fight a vote of confidence in his leadership of the Conservative Party.

The poll comes after the Tory leader challenged plotters to get in line or submit the 25 names they needed to trigger a vote of confidence.

It was shortly after lunchtime on Tuesday that it became apparent the necessary number of letters calling for a confidence vote had been sent to the chairman of the 1922 committee, Sir Michael Spicer.

Mr Duncan Smith then appeared on the steps of Conservative Central Office, with wife Betsy, to welcome the chance to end weeks of speculation about his future as Tory leader.

He called on Tory MPs to back him in the vote - to take place on Wednesday - rather than plunge the party into a "fractious leadership election" which could last for months.

The result is announced at 7pm tomorrow. His chances are said to be slim. The most common word to be used by MPs to describe his impending loss is 'humiliating'.

Thanks Torys, I needed that. What are you playing at? At least pretend to put up a fight against the coming tide of Lib Dems.

Farewell IDS, youve always made us laugh.

My God, Blair must be creaming himself over what the Tories are doing. His backbenchers are putting up more of a fight against the Government than the Opposition is.

What I can never understand is how they voted him in in the first place - he is a pale imitation of that other famous slap-head, Hague...

It amazes me in this country that when we have real ****ers for PMs, the main opposition party leaders are even bigger tossers!

e.g. Thatch-B*tch & Michael Foot

Ah, but Hague was so chubby. Didnt you just wanna reach and grab his liddle widdle cheek?

The torys implemented a new voting system whereby the party membership vote for the leader, and thats how IDS got in. I find it unsuprising that the MPs have done everything they can to **** this system up the arse so they can hold onto the power.

Erm...no

Well who are the Tories going to replace him with? They seem to have an uncharismatic bunch. The only one that would probably have any kind of public appeal would be Kenneth Clark, but he wouldn't be a popular choice internally. So they are screwed. No sad loss really It's not that I am a particular fan of Labour, but I just don't like what the Tories stand far: conservatism and upper/middle class privelege.

I would possibly be interested if the tories became a socialy liberal fiscaly conservative, midly eurosceptic party. However they appear to be only 1 of those things so I am not sure there is a party for me.

The coming tide of Lib Dems? Well thats certainly right in that every General Election they end up a washed-up party.

As for IDS - good riddance. The latest in a long line of rubbish.

Conservatives should drop Iain Smith, then go to Zimbawbe and drag out the real article - Ian Smith. Now there's a dynamic, experienced leader for you, especially on race relations issues. He'd probably go over better than Iain Duncan Smith, too. Victory is assured!

Great stuff. Get to hear a real live tory justify the shambles your party is in.

I would however advise strongly against tuning in before that. What the hell are they playing? Does country music have that big a following in york?

University radio generally tends to be quite eclectic because it follows the individual presenters' music tastes far more than any commercial radio station would... so yeah, if you pick the "wrong" programme you can get some bloody obscure stuff...

As far as im concerned, I pray he will win .. another 5 years for Tony ..

but if I was a tory, and I actually know 1 (believe it or not, they have not all died yet), I think id be praying for IDS to go.

My ideal would be that he wins 83 votes, and nobody in the tory party knows if he has secured 50% +1 or not

(as 82.5 is actually half, so half +1 = 83.5)

I just hope that the Tories elect a pragmatist, especially on Euro issues. I don't think I could stand another bout of "The Krauts and Frogs want to take the Queen's head off of our notes and coins".
