Ancient greek? I speak science Greek

A is for alpha, of angular shearing
B is for beta, relativistic theory
G is for gamma, a photonic emission
D is for delta a small change in position
E is for epsilon, permittivity junction
Z is for zeta, Riemmannian function

etc. too lazy to think up more rhymes.

I don't need to know how to say upsilon

Paitkiss, I think that is in modern greek, in ancient greek, the iota already does that sound.

I will give a few ancient greek words (transliterated) with upsilon in it

sophrsune (in my sig)
phulattein
phuton

It's pronounced as "ue", like you'd pronounce a German name like Mueller or Schuettler.

If no vowel precedes " Y " then it is pronnounced the same way you would with " i " in milk, silk, sink.

If " O " precedes (OY) it would be pronounced like " u " in resolution.

If " A " precedes (AY) it would be pronounced quite close to " Af " in Afghanistan.

If " E " precedes (EY) it depends on what consonant follows the two vowels. Most of the times is pronounced like an " f " a bit longer though (or what ever is the grammatical terminology). If " B " follows it sounds more like " ev ".

Strange language isn't it?

Oh, you owe me a few pounds for the lesson

Can't you just look up (i.e. google) the pronunciations of German ü, French u and Swedish y? There must be sound files somewhere. It's definitely not a 'oo'-sound, 'ee' is closer.

bayta

If you called it beeta then nobody would know what the **** you were saying

Anyhow, I doubt the modern Greeks are any closer to ancient pronunciations than modern scientists are.
