Lego Declare War on us? Got spare money?

via email - with the save game

==================================================
===============

Dear Gathered Storms,

Seems there is a breakthrough decision lying ahead both of us and you
in the game. We feel we should make it clear where we stand and what
our intentions are with respect to the current situation. Considering
all the fuss and ill will about past public "manifests", we would like
to let you know in private only.

We are sending you our "message" in two versions. Both basically mean
the very same, but side by side, they probably better fit the purpose
of conveying a "serious message" in a "game played for fun".

First, the version "with a British foreign office slant" (as redstar1,
its author, put it):

quote:
Our dearest chums of Gathering Storm,

After having a chat with some of the chaps across the sea, its been
pointed out that you have a jolly large force somewhere near
Yellowknife.

Far be it for us to interfere but we have to say that we aren't quite
tip-top with the idea of you having a picnic so close to GoW's back
yard. In fact, we are afraid to say that its really just not on old
boy.

We do believe that we still have a common interest as well as a
lucrative trade deal. Were you to start a bit of a scrap up north then
we would really have to rethink. I'm sure you understand we can't
really do deals with anyone we don't think is sound.

In short, we'd like you to have a think about the old gameplan. If you
want a cup of tea and a chat just let us know.

Yours Imperiously,
Lego

And the more "formal" version that would, sent alone, probably sound
harsher than we'd intend it to sound.

quote:
Honourable Nation of Gathering Storm,

It has been brought to our attention that a strong force of your War
Chicken in full arms just recently landed on the Eastern coast of Bob,
roughly South of Yellowknife.

Although we can naturally not be sure about the plans and intentions
of your generals, we feel the only reason for such a force to land
there would be an attack at the "homeland" cities of GoW and ND.

We are sorry to inform you that if such an attack was to happen or
become imminent, we would consider it an act threatening Legoland's
long-term interests, and as such would cause our nations to enter the
state of war, with the inevitable consequences for our current trade
deals, with no further warning.

Respectfully,
The Senate of Legoland

We would like to stress that our position at the moment is driven by
our long-term goals and plans, not by any grudges we'd hold against
your team. Under different circumstances, we might find ourselves on
your side of the barricade.

Legoland

We're not at war yet. I suspect that if we were willing to move our units back down south again, Lego would keep out of it. So do we gain more from having an invasion in the north and being at war with Lego, or confining our attacks to the south? Or are Lego bluffing / able to be convinced that it's not in their best interests to do this?

I think we at least ought to have a stab at trying to convince them that backing up their threat is a mistake. Either we end up at war with Lego as well, and GoW / ND share Bob (and we pull out to defend our home from Lego) - which isn't good for either of us - or we fight GoW only in the south, which probably isn't a winning proposition for us either - we can fight to a stalemate, preventing ND from gaining any more territory (it doesn't matter if GoW gain territory in the south since it is so corrupt for them), and slowly rebuilding RP cities (and new cities for us, which was the point of the enterprise after all). This is the course of action that suits Lego obviously, because they continue to research while their three serious competitors continue to waste themselves in a war which isn't benefiting anybody.

Is it worth mentioning this line of reasoning to Lego, and saying basically that since keeping the fight in the south plays into Legos hands, we're not going to do that. We're going to fight in the north, and if Lego are going to get involved then we are going to leave Bob alone, get peace with ND and GoW (which both are prepared to do once we are off Bob) and concentrate on fighting Lego, while ND and GoW share Bob between them, 'cos we don't have any better options right now.

OK I over-reacted , it just felt like it.

At least we have forced our opponents hand, and we now know where we stand (in a deep hole).

Options?

1. Phuque Lego and attack GoW or ND.

2. Focus on holding the South and rebuilding Spain.

3. Relocate RP to Stormia to end the war, with us taking their cities on Bob and clearing the diplomatic slate?

the last looks better to me, I feel.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I'd like to propose this as a draft message to Lego,

quote:

Legos,

we are somewhat bemused by your recent communications with us. There have long been rumours about your support of GoW in this dispute which we find confusing and now we recieve a "threat" which we see as utterly ridiculous.

There was much discussion between us, GoW and ND prior to their DoW on RP which you were not informed of. We cannot discuss these although we can say state that our intensions in this war are and will always be to prevent GoW and ND from taking full control of Bob. Two warlike allies joined at the hip with the most of the worlds production and resources would be far too powerful and would mean game over for everyone else.

This is why we are at war ATM, had we chosen to stay out of things or perhaps even help them we would have gotten a very very sweet deal out of it, which would have impacted upon you. However the looming threat would make it only a matter of time before we too were vassalized and the game being in the hands of GoW/ND.

Preventing them from becoming superpowers benefits you as much as it does us obviously, especially as it was not us next on the hit list. So you can imagine our frustration when we hear reports that you are actually helping out GoW and ND?

It was believed that you too would see the threat posed by GoW and ND and also aid RP in pushing back the advance. However that fact that instead you siezed upon this opportunity to get everyone else embroilled in a stagnating war which only benefits you is saddening.

We have been in communication with GoW and ND throughout the war and there has been many discussions about how things could work out better. There have been many openning for us to make a deal although so far none that don't give GoW more power than we'd like. Did you really think they were going to do a build off?

We hope that you have not completely made up your mind where you stand in this war. Although it is apparent that you probably have.

Your communication will again force us to rethink our activity in this war, perhaps it would be better for us to cut a deal with GoW now and then fight it out further down the line with you out of the picture.

GS

so what do you think?
I don't know if it'll work, probably needs alot of editing.

Also of note, from the save, is that we are no longer 1st in MFG.

Suffering from ads?

Here's another take on the same subject - written before I'd seen OPD's draft.

proposed reply - from the GS British Diplomacy wing:

quote:

Vondrack,

My dear, dear chap. So awfully good of you to get in contact with us. Yes, we're fine thanks, and the wife and kids are doingly splendidly too, thank-you. They'll be so thrilled you asked after them. And how are you and yours - everything OK I hope? I was so please to hear that your dog got over that nasty business with the extra lumps on her back and is now fitting togther nicely with her companion.

So what about this other thing you mentioned - our little expeditionary force in GoW? There's something we can't quite put our finger on, and it's why you are choosing to intervene against the side that's getting its arse kicked all over Spain? For many long years now the valiant Stormian youth have been shedding their blood to defend Spain and keep the world, including the grand, noble and dignified Legonians, safe from the venomous dark warmongering hordes of ND/GoW.

But now, at this critical moment, and after much sacrifice, we are finally in a position to strike a blow ourselves, when to our utter astonishment we find that our good trading partners and self-declared peaceful builders the Legonians are in fact allied to the evil blood-drinking superpowers who seek to enslave us all.

If GS are defeated, as is your evident intention, who will Lego be able to ally with when your friends the reapers of souls turn their sharpened scythes on their next, and rather obvious target - yourselves?

Put an end to popups!

Proposed message to GoW:

quote:

Hi guys,

How's it hanging? You forgot to get Vox to threaten us last turn too. Doubtless you have them there too defending your near-naked nests while we all slug it out down south to let your mates Lego win the game.

So what's the score? If we persuade RP to relocate chez-nous are you released from existing contractual obligations to re-consider the future? Or have you already signed up to be 'Lego's personal goons for the rest of the game'?

Obviously we're not thrilled at being the one team in a three-on-to-one scrap, and if we look like we're doomed some of us might even vote to take down someone - anyone - with us. Presumably the nearest, smallest and most vunerable would be likely. I'd have to check the map to see who that might be.

All our love,

GS

Cort Haus' last message to GoW looks good. My message to Vondrack would be short: **** you! Good thing I am not a diplomat.

I repeat my proposal from a few turns ago, to stop our advance at Bob, pretending to obey, just maintain a draw in the south (we can do this with low forces), try to get GoW to backstab, and land at Lego in 20-30 turns.

MY draft response:

quote:

Legoland,

You have chosen... poorly. I bear you no malice, but I do believe you have either made a mistake, or you have decided that your long-term stategic interest is not a balance of power. I regret this situation, as it has never been my desire to fight Legoland.

Nonetheless, since leaving GoW's homeland untouched is simply unacceptable from our standpoint, our northern force will not be retreating due to your threats. Stand aside, or prepare to be attacked.

I have to admit a simple **** you would be a hell of alot of fun to send certainly the last thing they'd expect and a nice way to strike fear into the hearts of GoW.

With Lego now being no1 in MFG they are the real long term danger now not us. We can perhaps use this and the fact that we pose more of an immenent threat to persuade GoW to do the right thing.

One should note that Lego are almost certainly NOT bluffing. We fight them, we trigger their GA.

So it would not only be 3 vs. 1.5 (not even), it would be 3 in GA v. 1.5.

My initial reaction to Lego was similar to those just expressed. The draft came much later.

If we are at war with Lego next turn with nothing else changing it's hard to see how GoW will backstab both of their current employers to join us. Our war aims would change from winning a presence on Bob to defending Stormia against three opponents, soon with Cavalry against our Pikes and our Knights v their Muskets.

Therefore, I guess we might have to swallow our pride, back down, and plot Legoland's destruction.

This may have to involve a RPodus to N. Stormia so we can get out of the GoW/ND war. Then we've gotta convince them to hit Legoland.

Sigh. We're basically screwed at this point. Our attempt at securing enough land to become a major power (for the endgame) has failed. We've two options:

1) suck it up, get out of the war, and scheme and plot, awaiting an opportunity to deal ourselves back in; or
2) Blaze of Glory (more likely Gory).

Okay, one thing's for certain... we need muliple responses as well. So far we have 5, so let me add mine (also needs some editing, hopefully tonight):

quote:
Dear Legomen,

It pains me, as your former ambassador, to see these harsh words coming from you. It's not totally unexpected; there have long been rumours of you joining the dark side, and so be it. I wish it would have gone differently, but apparently you do not keep to the initial idea that neither GS or Lego can let GoW and ND finish RP off unpenalized. On the contrary, you support them in exactly that gang rape.

You should fully realize that one of the only things we could do to hamper the war bullies is to attack them on their own ground. We do not feel this invasion to be decisive, but as long as we lose units in defending RP, and ND and GoW can save their strengths, this war is getting worse. There is only one way out... by trying to prevent this, you most likely decide the faith of the game, in that you will not win. (and neither will we, obviously)

Long term strategy dictates you should keep your hands out of the Bob mess, as it dictated we should have taken the GoW-ND offer of exterminating RP, instead of helping them. I can appreciate that sometimes you do things in this game which are not very logical but more for fun, but I fear that you have been partly blinded by your 'allies' regarding our power, or our ability to hurt them. By joining them, you hand the game to Bob...

But, it's your choice, of course. No matter what your reasons are (I hope not personal, like the RP-GoW war is), no matter how strange those reasons may seem if we try to see it from your view point, we wish you good luck in this game. And personally, I hope you have the decency to actually declare war on us, instead of maneuvering us in such a position that we have to declare war on you. We do not want a war with Legoland, as you always have been reliable, and fun trade partners. So please, do not force us into something we do not want to do.

As to long term plans: Don't know... certainly no blaze of glory, which we can't do as long as others can't invade our territory. As to sucking it up: I don't know either.... the only way of gaining anything in this war is by attacking ND or GoW homecities (and raze those damn things if possible), we have been further hurt by the war then they have been (also because of poor tactical moves a few turns). It's not looking good... I have to think on this before making up my mind. Sadly, today isn't the best day time-wise, as usual when big decisions come up.

Whatever our response ends up being, I do think a "ps" expressing our appreciation of their avoidance of public mudslinging.

I can't believe they're jumping in on the side that's winning. Check that, yes I can. It's easy. They know we can't really hurt them, and they get a GA out of it. ****ers.

Well there's a possible rationale for Lego - their GA. It answers the question 'why' that's been bugging us, and somehow makes it less personal. If they really wanted a GA, though, couldn't they just attack their little darling Voxlings and kiss 'n make up the next turn?

First, I expect we have to be not-at-war with their possible sponsor Lego.

Second, we probably need to relocate RP. We need to know soon if GoW will accept that as completing their contract - if that is really the story.

Third, we have to offer them something substantial that, unlike ND, we're not really in a position to offer yet. However, we could ultimately offer them ND soil that ND themselves would be unlikely to offer them - but then we don't know the terms of the deal with GoW/ND in terms of sharing the spoils. ND certainly boss the map, but maybe they've agreed to move their Palace south later to give GoW room.

Although the suggested GA-motivation is a good one, I don't rule out the possibility of Lego seeing us as their long-term threat, and want to at least limit us to Stormia. It's also possible that (being wildly conspiratorial here) there's been a secret, long-term anti-Stormian axis, where ND, GoW and Lego have agreed to take out GS after first securing Bob.

Arnelos reckoned that Lego had been trying to get GoW to do a hit on ND. I find that hard to believe and wonder if it was a ruse from Lego to disguide their true loyalties.

Another thought - saltpetre. If we have none, then Lego and the others might decide that now if the time to eliminate GS from the game. I don't think rational future considerations need enter into it beyond that attractive goal, especially if they've talked themselves into believing how powerful we are / were.

Looking at the map, it seems that ND is a greater threat to us than GoW. It is therefore pointless to risk a war with Lego so that we can put the hurt on GoW. If the Yellowknife landing was intended to force GoW into a decision, it has not worked the way we intended. It appears they now have forced us to make the choice of war with all, or agreeing to their conditions for backstabbing ND. (Yes we could move our forces south, but unless a decisive victory is possible there, what’s the point?)

Do I trust GoW? No. Is it possible that their conditions for backstabbing ND are a trick to get us to do their dirty work, and that they have no intention going to war with ND? Yes. If that’s the case, however, it would indicate that GoW, ND and Lego have all agreed to eliminate us, in which case, there’s no hope anyway. Therefore, we don’t seem to have any real choice (other than going down in a blaze of glory and taking GoW with us). For either us or GoW to have a chance of winning, we both need more territory and resources. Finding a reasonable division of most or all of ND territory is our only shot.

My recommendation is that we send a note to GoW indicating that we will agree to move RP off of Bob as part of a comprehensive, mutually-agreed deal to backstab ND. Our note should state that a) we will not permit RP to be eliminated from the game; b) we will not remove them from Bob until an agreement with GoW has been reached; c) if Lego declares war, we may have no choice but to assume that all three powers have decided to gang up on GS, meaning that all hope is lost and thus we may as well take you out with us.

We need to respond to Lego as well. Not sure the approach to take. My recommendation is to inform them that we are actively seeking an agreement with GoW to end the war and that we have no desire to fight in northern Bob. The best way to preserve our peaceful relationship would be for Lego to encourage GoW to reach an agreeable outcome.

Again, I don’t know these guys nor the history of this game, so I can’t judge how they’ll respond.

Yet another thought - about Lego this time. If we proceed with operations on the GoW homeland and they declare war on us then what exactly are their aims? Do they want a fight to the last hit point and pixel or what? I think we should certainly ask them that.

Less seriously, it's tempting to say: "Fine. We'll make peace instantly with ND and GoW and come after you - to the last pixel, and with anyone else we can muster. We won't care about those guys, Bob, RP or even winning anymore. You'd give us a clear focus until our last turn : Get Lego."

I'd kind-of forgotten that any Legolanders had a vote. Yes, we need to play to them, not their dictator.

Anyone in a team with friendly Legonians in the DG2? Any chance of perhaps fomenting a little domestic opposition to the uber-blockhead? At least a little intelligence on the 'citizen's view'.

First of all, they're a long way for our galleys to go. Reinforcing the first wave... well, the first wave would have to be THE wave.
Second, I don't believe for a second word wouldn't leak out.
Third, they could block their coast, preventing a landing, the same way we're doing in N. Stormia. If I was going to invade Legoland, I'd do it through Voxian territory - which means Navigation, I think.

As much as it might appeal to us to hurt Legoland right now, it just isn't practical.

Here is a radical thought:

We do a deal that ends the Bobian war, getting RP out of there and up to N. Stormia. Then, we lay low, playing nice, trading, etc. What happens then? GoW, ND, and Lego will have to eventually come to blows somehow. When that goes down, we will have the opportunity to jump in, or to merely watch from the sidelines and hope they grind each other down.

In other words, it may be that our only viable move at this point is to withdraw. Hurts my pride a bit, but I'll live.

NOTE: we may not need to really negotiate the removal of RP for peace. We could just do it, scorched earth style, leaving nothing behind (if possible), and then ask GoW & ND whether or not they really want to stay at war with civs they cannot actually fight until Amphibious Warfare. That way we don't get them putting conditions like "you must leave us Spanish cities/improvements intact."

Perhaps we could even get invention, GP and astro out of such a deal?

Some better news - from our Allies Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

quote:

Cort Haus,

This is the most infuriating thing I have read in months. The only way this war can be won is if we bring the war to the homes of the enemy.

This threat by Legoland cannot deter GS, but it is more than troubling, it's absurd. Legoland's "long term interests" don't mean a damn thing to us, and if they cause any further problems we will happily declare war on them and remain in a state of war with them until our very last city is destroyed.

Let those short-sighted, sniveling, arrogant blockheads rot in their own war weariness.

We remain at the ready to do whatever we can to help.

Now there's a token of good cheer in this dark hour. How's that as a nice little threat to Lego. Way to go, RP

(I'll post this in the log too)
