Very good DrSpike. It is indeed Dan Dare.

The first game was released on C64 as an action adventure. You had to find your way into a hidden base on an asteroid that was hurtling towards earth. Trying to defeat the Mekon and his army of loyal treens.

The spectrum and CPC apparently were more platform orientated but the graphics were quite good on all platforms.

No it's not a clanger. Actually it might predate the clangers by a decade or so. The original comic was from the 50/60's and the clangers arrived in the 70's.

It's stripey, a pet which is sort of a cross between a cat and an elephant. Dan and his crew picked up on one of their travels.
