You are right to be hesitant to correct your elders. That is mostly very unattractive in the young.

But bad manners are bad manners whatever the age of the person concerned. And this woman's manners were certainly bad.

I doubt anyone thought you acted like a punk. Your rebuke was not at all excessive. The other people in the queue will have been glad for someone to have spoken up.

When an older person delivers a reproof to a child it is with the hope that the child will learn better. I don't know whether this particular wrinkly is still capable of learning. But at least you gave her the chance.

You were good, man. With somebody like that who just thinks that the world owes them, there's really nothing you can do. Actually, you would have shown tremendous dignity by just letting her have her way - it's clear to everybody that she's at fault, not you.

Good that you managed to get a little dig in edgeways, though - let her know that she's not quite the self appointed martyr that her ego makes her think she is!

I can't tell you how many times I've seen old people being incredibly rude and selfish in this manner, as if they were entitled to everything. I am always hesitant, however, since it's been ingrained in all of us: "RESPECT YOUR ELDERS!"

Well, you're not obligated to respect anyone who doesn't act respectfully to you. Elders lose any "entitlement" the second they start behaving that way. I have no problem giving my seat on the train to an elderly person, unless they start out acting obnoxiously.

Of course, living in NYC has made me more...direct. I can see why people stereotype NYers as rude, but really it's conditioning based on having to put up with crap like you did on a more consistent basis, given the sheer numbers that surround you every day. You lose patience with twits.

My own story (not old people, but still...):

I was in the East Village one wintry night last year, and was trying to catch a cab with a friend to go uptown. It was around midnight, when cabs are hard to get due to the shift change. We'd been trying for about 10 minutes when a trio of rather skankily-dressed women (they reeked of New Jersey) appeared trying to get a cab as well. Sure enough, a minute later a free cab pulled up towards the curb...and the women raced to it.

I was pretty irked, so I went up and said, "Hey, we've been standing here for ten minutes, long before you were, so this cab is ours."

The women didn't stop getting in, and one said essentially "**** you, pal, we got to the cab first, so tough ****." My friend started arguing with her as she got in the cab, and she rolled down the window to continue hurling obscenities and insults.

I just walked over to a nearby trashcan, picked up an armful of garbage covered in dirty snow, and as the cab drove past, hurled the garbage into the open window, right on top of the girl and her friends.

Ah, I can still hear the screams of disgust from those rude *****es as the cab went off into the distance...

So far, I have found one concrete advantage to growing up. Namely in buses and such there's always going to be someone younger than you that has to get up to give his sit to the elderly.

I don't know if old people in particular are rude, I'd guess that many people who are *******s when they are young remain that way when they are old.

I thought the trash was appropriate, considering the women and their behavior. Was it mature of me? No, but it sure felt good. I only regret that the poor cabbie had to clean up the mess.
