I'm actually hoping attacks will die down for the following:

All the little chiefs now know their big chief is gone. If they grab what cash and assets they can get their hands on they don't have to worry about Saddam calling them on it.

Take the loot, sell the weapons and transform themselves into "new" Iraqis.

I can dream, but hopefully some of them are smart enough to see the potentional in this.

It is good that he was captured, but it is sad to see so many people calling for his murder though. I can only ask why? What would purpose would killing him serve? Those who want them murdered must realize that in doing so, they are proving that they are no better than he is.

Does anyone else find the timing of his "capture" suspect? Just as Halliburton's fleecing of taxpayers was becoming the top story, Saddam is found... on a Sunday morning when millions would be watching football...

maybe the tin foil hat conspriacist in me is just going nuts, but could Saddam have been captured much eariler and put "on ice"?!

I'll make a prediction: Osama bin Laden gets captured close to next year's presidential elections... or maybe after the Democrats announce their nomination... EVERYONE TAKE NOTE OF MY PREDICTION! If it happens, I hope people will take notice and start to question their government.

Maybe Saddam's capture was put on ice for a few days, so that his capture would be announced at the best time of the week.

But his capture was certainly not put on ice for weeks or months. The 'crisis' you're referring to is not nearly enough to decide playing such a precious card. If I was holding Saddam in secret, I would only reveal it at a key moment of the campaign, not when a minor and soon-forgotten scandal surfaces.

Diss:
I still believe the traces of Saddam's WMD programme have been found, and they're kept up in secret until the campaign.

As I said ever since the WMDs weren't revealed after the war: Rumsie will 'find' the pathetic remains of Saddam's programme during a difficult time of the campaign, and he'll explain how OMGOMGHORRIBLYDANGEROUS they are.

I was against Kosovo too.

But I think Milosevic and Saddam are two completely different kinds of murderers, who have done great evil in two very different ways.

Milosevic had greatly contributed to the implosion of Yugoslavia, as he developed his nationalistic/fascist ideas for political gain. He has direct responsibility in the ignominious massacres that plagued Yugoslavia for years. However, he was clearly not alone, and many people played (murdered) for themselves in the climate he has contributed to create. Toward the Serbs, Milosevic was nothing more than an authoritarian leader, and there were no massacres or massive torture of Serbs AFAIK. OTOH, he was ruthless with the Bosnians, and he has done terrible things to the Kosovars.
All in all, I think Milosevic was less terrible than Saddam, but he commited the greater crime of inoculating the poison that destroyed Yugoslavia and shattered so many lives.

Saddam was a much more straightforward despot. Anybody he didn't like was executed. Any revolt ended up in a mass murder. I think he is much more cruel than Milosevic, but it is possible he bears responsibility for less horror. I'm not sure.

I doubt if the Iraqi's would permit Saddam to leave Iraq to be tried in the Hague. If there is to be an international tribunal, it will have to be held in Iraq.

We may be heading towards another spat with the Europeans on this. We may want to try Saddam for war crimes and crimes against humanity with the death penalty on the table. That cannot be done at the Hague or with the International Criminal Court involved. I also doubt that the UN would authorize a special tribunal with the death penalty on the table.

We might even have problems if the coalition decides to try him because many of its members are against the death penalty.

I doubt that the Iraqi's themselves should be the sole judges of war crimes and crimes against huminity. The Iranians and the Kuwaiti's will want to be involved in such trials in some fashion as they were attacked and were the victims of war crimes.

This may be a real mess.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Of course Saddam should be trialed first by the Iraq court.

And after that (if there's something else to be done) perhaps somewhere else who thinks they have a case against saddam.

On a sidenote: the capture of saddam does not change the fact that I still don't like G.W.Bush one bit. a piece of crap is still piece of crap, even if you fry it in oil and serve with bearnaisse dressing

AH, no I don't. The French and Germans always seem to disagree with anything Bush proposes just like Democrats running for president. Of course, their disagreement is always based on principle.
