With the boys, its more about the noise you make with your hand and the shame/embarrassment of invading their personal space with your hand rather than inflicting physical pain. It's such a good circuit breaker for tantrums and such like - takes their mind right off whatever it is they are behaving badly about.

One of em said to me that when I hit them it doesn't hurt and I asked him if he would like me to make it hurt? He never brought it up again

They tend to dread being sent to their room more than smacks. I have to hide my face for laughing sometimes at the howls and indignation that can be provoked by the "go to your room" order. It's hilarious.

There's also a category of incident that requires no punishment - like when one of em spilt black model paint all over the family room carpet and in trying to clean it up made a huge black stain, plus fouled the ensuite bathroom basin with black paint. Just being caught was punishment enough. You know the kid has suffered already waiting to be caught. He'd put furniture in an odd position over the stain so he must have known it was inevitable.

On that occasion one of the little kids intercepted me on the way to the family room and said "I'm not allowed to tell you where so and so spilled the paint everywhere."

Don't be so tight-a**ed authoritarian, man! Give them the priviledge of a choice, say between the leather belt and a nice wooden rod. It teaches them to be decisive. Look at me, it didn't do me any harm!

Also, to toughen them up, be sure to require that they not cry during the beating. Inform them that crying means that they don't understand and accept the punishment and that the beating will continue as long as they cry. If they continue to respond to the strokes of the lash on their behinds with so much as a tear or a sob, give them 10 seconds to stop. If they don't stop, continue the beating. If this cycle goes on for more than 30 minutes inform them that you'll be forced to escalate and give them another 10 seconds. If they don't stop crying then try shaking and shouting into their face. Toss away the belt or rod and get down to it - mano y infanto, bare knuckles baby. You know you want to. If it feels good just do it.

No, it's not just a frigging whipping. It's the fact that the simplest mistakes would get me hit, even up till I turned 18. There's a difference between a spanking and a full on ****ing beating.

Yeah. I don't advocate beating like you would in a boxing match. the leather belt is no biggie though. IMHO.

We just had a big emotional debate down here about whether hitting kids is child abuse. The outcome was parents are still allowed to smack their kids with their hand but only on the backside or legs and only so as not to leave a bruise. The child abuse advocates got the use of implements like wooden spoons and belts outlawed.

That's a pretty clear guide which most parents are happy with.

My grandmother used whip her kids with a branch from a cherry tree. That was pretty brutal.
