Ah well. The ref was obviously following Havak's and Tamerlin's definition of a dummy runner - anyone who finishes up anywhere in front of the ball carrier is causing obstruction even if they're not obstructing anyone. Dummy runners are perfectly legitimate unless they actually physically obstruct a defender.

Vincent Clerc has not been handled any good ball, he was most of the time supporting the other backs while they were fumbling with the ball.

On this match maybe, but Dominici hasn't had good balls either and still did better (except once). Generally, Clerc's placement seemed weird. I wish I had been at the stadium to see how the French backs were placed, because it looked like their placement was really strange. I saw Dominici (left wing) come play on the right wing once, I didn't see Clerc do anything like that.

Magne was indeed bad in the first half. He never ran towards the opponents but perpendicularly, which is useless.

Brumbies 44 - d- Blues 27

Extraordinary game of high-powered, blitzkrieg rugby played in very trying conditions. 38C in Canberra during the day, 30C at kickoff. The Brumbies had every combination working a treat, and a defence that minimised the impact of Carlos and the lethal Blues' back three. The old guard - Gregan, Larkham, Roff, Mortlock - were all at the top of their powers, and the younger brigade weren't far behind. Rathbone looks like he can play a bit too. Marking Caucau, he only let him slip once.

Interestingly enough, the Brumbies spent the last 20 minutes doing exactly what you're not meant to do - kicking long to the Blues' back three. Except the Brumbie chasers were steaming after the kicks, trapping the Blues deep where they didn't want to be. Very interesting tactic. And, yet again, Carlos' defence was found wanting. Anyone who sees a replay should take a look at Steve Larkham's extraordinary try early in the second half - leaping over Dougie Howlett in the in-goal to take the ball and ground it.

This game also showed that although Caucau has plenty of speed, strength and agility, he is very lacking in smarts. His pass to Giteau that led to yet another Brumbie try was unforgivably stupid.

Ireland 36 - 15 Wales.
Ireland played beautifully. Nice mauls, a huge pair of centers (Darcy is as skilled in attack as O'Driscoll), good pressure put on the Welsh by the pack and O'Gara.
The Welsh suffered all the match, particularly in the first half against the wind. Then Howe, the Irish winger committed repeated fouls around mauls, and their poor fullback was yellow carded in his place. The Welsh finally managed to score twice, but the Irish were only 14, and they had replaced half their team.
This tends to prove that the Welsh can still lose to the Italians.

I didn't see the England match, though I saw the tries. Looks like the Scots are in a big mess, too.

Yes well, he didn't look first. Hard to blame him, though, I think. Carlos had started an all-or-nothing length-of-the-field attempt virtually from behind the Brumbies' try line catching even his team mates off guard. They were too slow to move to support Caucau. He knew he was covered so he threw a speculator. When it works, you're a hero. When it doesn't, you look stupid.

EDIT. Oh, and I was extremely angry on the weekend to discover that Sky in New Zealand is showing the 6 Nations matches and FoxSports here - part of the same network - isn't!

But they shouldn’t be. And there’s the key point for me.

Oh and ignoring the English result is getting a little tired maybe? Particularly when you post obscure results from the domestic game down there that mean absolutely nothing until the knock out stage.

And ignoring the Tigers result too - now why would that be?

Le Petit Ophrys turns out to be a bit like my very good English-Italian dictionary, which includes a huge amount of idiom in the translations. But the P.O. is handier in that the idiom is the first point of reference.

Buggered if I know guys – some nonsense about not telling you tales about salad?

Because the judgment calls a ref have to make are extremely difficult with regards to whether it’s an obstructing move or not and it gets abused and ruins games for me. Plus like the way England are better at any phase of forward play and the SH teams therefore want all those laws altered so do the Tri nations teams stand supreme at using men ahead of the ball so I want all those laws changed. Seems only fair right?

I suspect Tamerlin agrees with me. You might find other allies for the Axis point of view.

Not at all – I have never seen any particularly sensible justification for allowing men ahead of the ball (except in a maul).

*edit*

Now this is interesting:

Wallabies 2004 season:
13 June Australia v Scotland, Docklands Stadium Melbourne
19 June Australia v Scotland, Sydney Olympic stadium
26 June Australia v England, Lang Park Brisbane
17 July New Zealand v Australia, Wellington
31 July Australia v South Africa, Perth
7 August Australia v New Zealand, Sydney
21 August South Africa v Australia, Durban

The Wallabies are warming up for us with two tests against Scotland?

Is Matt Carroll insane I wonder?

Mmmm. The judgement calls are difficult for the ref. In that case, we'd better outlaw rucks and mauls too. There's often a very fine line between one and the other.

I think if you'd spent a bit longer up there - in Cairns, in particular - you might have discovered the dark side. And yes, your IQ would've lifted the local average substantially. It dipped a tad after Mr Foley left to coach over there.

No – rucks and mauls are comparatively easy to referee – except for refs from certain countries not yet engaged in their annual international tournaments who are bleeding clueless about them.

I wouldn't know. I didn't see it! It's outrageous that Sky in New Zealand is showing the matches and FoxSports here isn't! If they can be bothered showing HC matches three weeks after the event, why won't they buy the 6 Nations rights?

Dumbing down is obviously the way to the top of your league. Have the Tigers considered lobotomies? By which I mean, have they considered lobotomising more than just VD?

I have no idea why the ARU ended up with two Scotland matches. Perhaps Ireland weren't interested in touring. Or maybe they had other commitments. Two England matches would have earned the ARU a fortune. There was obviously a limit to the number of Tests England could play in the time available.

quote:

Strange team, Toulouse. A few weeks ago I saw them play a terrific first half against, from memory, Ospreys. They went missing in the second half. Against Leeds they made themselves look ordinary in the first half, and Leeds made them look ordinary in the second half.

Speaking of grenouilles, I notice two Perpignan players ended up with 4 and 6 weeks after those mass citings by Wasps a while ago. You have to wonder where the officials were looking on the day. That was the match where the only punishment handed out was a card to a Wasps player.

Pays de cocagne Tamerlin?

Your question is not an easy one, we have to speak about history.

The Pays de Cocagne is actually where I have been raised and where I am currently living. The Cocaigne or Cocagne is a little ball of compacted leaves coming from a flower called the Pastel. These Cocagnes were used to produce a blue dye called Pastel that was sought after in the whole medieval world.

From 1462 to 1562, the Pastel coming from Toulouse and its vicinity came to be considered as the most beautiful in Europe and was thus highly looked after. With the Pastel came the richness of the Lauragais and with the richness came the many castles, churches and dovecotes that are still covering the area.

If the Pastel was Raised in an area around Toulouse, the Pastel merchants (known as the Pastelier) where living in Toulouse and their fabulous fortunes made the wealth of the city.

The Pasteliers built many of the most beautiful monuments of Toulouse, fastuous houses called hôtels made from red brick (the main material used in the area) and from an ochre stone also coming from the surrounding land. Among the most famous are the Hôtel d'Assézat, the Hôtel de Nupces and the Hôtel de Bernuy.

Unfortunately, in 1562, the Religion Wars, which ravaged the Lauragais, and the rise of another dye called the Indigo started the inexorable decline of the Pastel market.

The richness faded away and now remains the colloquialism evoking a land of wonders called the Pays de Cocagne, a rich land that has disappeared... as if it were an illusion.

Put an end to popups!

Except Tamerlin would be the only one - well, apart from LDiCesares - who would understand them.

As you well know that was my intent.

My boss is always giving me the irrits so I may road test it today.

Ah yes. Georgia.

A small town in NSW I believe?

It's outrageous that Sky in New Zealand is showing the matches and FoxSports here isn't!

Perhaps they believe there is no Aussie audience for it?

Or, alternatively, "our magnificent next World Cup-winning [INSERT SPONSOR'S NAME] Wallabies".

Ambitious – as I suspect the Wallabies will do well to enter it any higher than fourth seed given where it is being held?

Cairns is where a taxi driver launched into a truly amazing tirade against Shane Warne (before his trouble) and ‘southern’ folk (NSW?) without any prompting from us ‘Pommie Bludgers’ so I have an inkling what you mean.

Dumbing down is obviously the way to the top of your league

Foley was a disaster and nearly got them relegated. Connelly turned them around as Foley was dumped to helm the forwards only – a task he is better suited to.

There was obviously a limit to the number of Tests England could play in the time available.

Although you would think so – the money men are now mooting a second match with Scotland every year to move the Calcutta cup outside the six nations. It’s a truly stupid idea – we need another game against France, Ireland, NZ, the Boks or Aus!!

You have to wonder where the officials were looking on the day

In Perpignan? They were already looking to the bar in the club house post game and the nice little Catalan restaurant for that evening.

The richness faded away and now remains the colloquialism evoking a land of wonders called the Pays de Cocagne, a rich land that has disappeared... as if it were an illusion.

I honestly thought you were simply pulling Finbar’s chain by calling Aus a land of plenty Tamerlin – but that was fascinating stuff. What it is to have a country with a history eh?

As for Dominici he didn’t affect the result so I felt okay about having a little laugh at him. My bad.

You need a Petit Ophrys yourself. You could slag Bath supporters mercilessly and they wouldn't be any the wiser.

Yes, but they play L***** there. Has to be the other one.

Mmmm. What's the audience for a HC match at least three weeks old? Admittedly the HC stuff would be cheaper. FoxSports has tons of rugby. It's now the only television outlet for rugby. They know they'd get an audience. I reckon it's probably cost. Cheap bastards.

Hasn't stopped them winning WRCs overseas before.

Now you're with me. And when the Cairns cabbie mentioned "southern" folk he probably meant Brisbane-ites. Anyone further south than Brisbane wouldn't have been so politely described. Oh, and Shane Warne, as a person, blew it with the majority before his most recent trouble. The ongoing sex scandals sank him. He's admired as a cricketer, but not much as a person anymore.

The man you said couldn't coach.

I wonder what it is about Scotland. Apart from an easy win.

Very sensibly so.
