Question 1: Are you happy with how things have gone for Apolyton in the game?
I think we've done incredibly well given the land we've had. I don't think it'd be unreasonable to say that Apolyton has played the best out of all the teams.
Question 2: Are you happy with how things are going for Apolyton the team?
Despite the increasing disruption and disagreements, at least the arguments centre mainly on the game rather than individuals (for the most part). It would've been impossible for there to be no disputes given the stress and difficulty of the game and the serious dilemmas involved in diplomatic and strategic issues.
Question 3: If there were one thing you would have different for Apolyton in the game, what would it be?
Slightly better allies than CGN.
Question 4: If you could change one thing about the team, what would it be?
More civilized discussion.

quote: Question 1: Are you happy with how things have gone for Apolyton in the game? |
Yes. Despite being handicapped by being handed a Dominae start ( ), we've risen to become the dominant power on our continent, and we're rapidly catching up with GWT and CGN.
quote: Question 2: Are you happy with how things are going for Apolyton the team? |
Yes. We have some quibbles with each other, but they're game-related, which is better than any other topic. We've stayed focused on the game, more or less.
quote: Question 3: If there were one thing you would have different for Apolyton in the game, what would it be? |
Have the map balanced out. Start positions aside, 10 of the 12 irons go to 4 civs, the other 2 to the other 4? (A close second is to have 1BC not drop out, thus removing GCA from the game. A close third is for the Timecounter to be ENFORCED, to keep the game moving along. )
quote: Question 4: If you could change one thing about the team, what would it be? |
Keeping Aeson and Sir Ralph on board.

Not a lurker, but not a official either, so here goes:
Question 1: Are you happy with how things have gone for Apolyton in the game?
Absolutely. We had a terrible start, but have nonetheless scratched and clawed our way to the #3 position, and we're in decent shape to eventually win.
Question 2: Are you happy with how things are going for Apolyton the team?
I certainly wish the squabbling between BF and the consuls will end, but other than that I can't find fault.
Question 3: If there were one thing you would have different for Apolyton in the game, what would it be?
It's tempting to say "better land" but I'll go with getting a Great Leader instead. Imagine... Palace jump proceeds as planned, we build the Great Wall, and then *BAM* we get a free Adam Smiths to fire our GA. Oh, it would have been beautiful. Or, possibly better yet, we do a really long prebuild to ensure Smiths, and use the leader on Leos.
Question 4: If you could change one thing about the team, what would it be?
Ideally, more activity without more disagreement. We have a good number of talented people putting in effort, but there can ALWAYS be more. Unfortunately, most people don't have the time to do more than post (at least not consistently). That includes me. So, I guess I'd grant us all unlimited free time, so we could waste that time on this game

Yes. crap start turned into a decent position, excellent work all around.

Yes, but I feel the consuls need to pay the citizens more attention and likewise some citizens to lay off the personal attacks. Not a real productive atmosphere.

Finish off GCA before they met GWT. Also I don't care for the shifting of goalposts lately. We first took Boston to help CGN. Then we took it to give GWT/GCA a lesson. First we wanted to continue from the current save, then we wanted to jump back 5 turns even when GWT was ready to continue onward. I just read the forums, so the change in temperature was unclear to me, leading to my number 4:

empasis on chats. I can rarely make chats, I think I've made maybe one chat here and 4 chats with Gathering Storm. I just don't know what I will be doing at any given moment, less so now, as I've had to take temp employment. And I have a wife who won't necessarily leave me alone for a long stretch of time, at least at a predetermined time. Chats are a great way to speed things along, but in this game I almost feel as if everything is determined in chats. I think there are others like me, that can't make it to chats and feel left out.

If you mean how poly has acted, it's a mixed thing. Game-wise, we've come from a poor starting position, and are doing okay. The same skills applied to a superior position would have left all others in the dust by now.
However, politically it's something else. The NAP breaking was something that we knew was going to bite us back, and it did. It made half our diplomatical contacts go sour. It led to endless discussions in-team and out-of-team, and more or less us corrupting the administrator to favor us. It was not a good thing in my view, but as I'm only a lurker I can't complain.
quote: Question 2: Are you happy with how things are going for Apolyton the team? |
You got to be kidding. The biggest mystery to me is how so many people are still active in this forum, how much interest there still is. This forum has been a pissing match for several months now. I will not be pointing fingers to anyone, as it is not anyone's sole fault. And frankly I don't care which side will 'win', I can't even enumerate all the different sides.
The truth is I don't like it here. I keep reading because the game itselve interests me, but the atmosphere in this forum stinks. I applaud everyone to keep doing their (volunteered) job, to keep giving feedback, and to try to do something constructive in this ill climate. I simply can't bear it (nor do I have the time for it). Sorry.
Maybe I need more experience with DGs, and it always turns out to be this way... I only know of the GS forum, which is (sometimes too) quiet, calm, consensus based, and without any mudslinging at all (I haven't seen one example of it in what... 20,000 posts?)
quote: Question 3: If there were one thing you would have different for Apolyton in the game, what would it be? |
Not breaking the GCA treaty. Or doing it differently, so there wasn't this much resentment. Also, it is obvious we don't want to exploit things, but we're no angels... we started fortifying our galleys the turn we had them and haven't stopped. That is at the edge of an exploit... I missed the discussion at that time, but always found it fishy. I'm not saying we shouldn't have done that, but we might not have made these fools of ourselves by objecting every little exploit others use. We're guilty of exactly the same thing, maybe not in the same extend, but in the same spirit.
quote: Question 4: If you could change one thing about the team, what would it be? |
If I could be omnipotent and change something on this team, I would give everyone a break from the game, a cocktail on a sunny beach for 2 weeks, and 10 extra friendliness-points towards each other. The atmosphere has to improve here, or the 'poly team will end with 2 consuls and half a lurker, instead of the 80 or so people we started with. And most likely those 2 consuls would be fighting each other.
Just my two cents, I'll go back into lurking now. And no offense to anyone, as I said, I do hold a lot of respect for everyone who keeps on posting here. I couldn't... So keep going, I'll applaud you for that

I would like to comment a bit on DeepO's and Rhoth's concerns many of which I shared myself.
The first, and most obvious, was the breaking of the NAP with GCA. Yep, it was a cruel thing to do, and I warned the team back then that it would come back to haunt us despite most people thinking it would make no difference. It did. But fortunately it only soiled our relations with one other team: GWT. Neither CFC or CGN seemed much perturbed by it.
Now enter GWT's psyche. They don't have a single truly fluent english speaker, unlike ND who had Darekill. Diplomacy was and is GWT's achilles heel and the only reason they cuddled up with GCA was because after all, Lucky is german. We also had a rather unfortunate galley incident which did not help either to send our relationship downhill.
Ultimately, and despite my misgiving, I totally agree that the moment we attacked GCA was the optimal one. They were caught with their pants down and without Feudalism. Had we waited until the NAP ran out, it would have likely taken enough time for GCA to have suspected of our intentions and prepare a more effective defense. Was it wrong? Yes. Was it effective. Also yes. Ultimately, these things ARE allowed in demo games, even though it's sneaky, sometimes it's the best way to win.
With regards to the galley forting, I am still surprised that we did that for so long (well, using a unit in the galley to then Fort All). I whined and moaned about this being and exploit and practically EVERYONE said that it wasn't and kept on doing it.
Other than that... I would love to be 2 weeks in a beach drinking a daiquiri... but oh well, life's a b*tch

Question 1: Are you happy with how things have gone for Apolyton in the game?
I think we have done well considering our disadvantaged start. Something that has been very cool is that we learned many lessons from the PtWDG and applied them here. Also, the best-of-the-best from those teams have run our foreign, domestic, and military departments effectively and with great efficiency.
Question 2: Are you happy with how things are going for Apolyton the team?
Right from the start it was apparent that there were going to be stressful times due to all the strong personalities. Fortunately we did not lose too many people from this, and have managed to curb such tendancies when they get out of control.
I know that many are turned off by the sniping, but it unfortunately seems to be common in DGs.
Question 3: If there were one thing you would have different for Apolyton in the game, what would it be?
I won't pick apart the job people have done. On the whole everything has been done very well.
Question 4: If you could change one thing about the team, what would it be?
The empire is now big enough for some delegation to occur, so maybe we can split duties up and involve more people?

1) We have done outstanding given the odds stacked against us.
2) If you asked 2 weeks ago I'd of said yes, and I hope if you ask in 2 weeks I will say yes. I'll trust that the more recent behaviors have been a result of stress and will subside.
3) This is easy. I would of had GCA fight it out with us to the bitter end with no one having any reason to suspect that the outcome was anything other than what it should be. Even if this meant we lost and were out of the game at this point, i'd much rather things had gone that way than the game itself descend into accusations and exploits.
4) Not sure. I would say more delegation but I don't personally have time for responsibility so its not my place to demand more involvement for other people :P

Yes. We've done incredibly well despite our start.
quote: Question 2: Are you happy with how things are going for Apolyton the team? |
No, not really. There's been far too much squabbling in this forum, both recently and over its history. That thankfully seems to have died down for now.
Participation is also a problem, but that is a very hard thing to get back up once it goes down, and I myself am guilty of devoting my time to other DGs and not leaving much for the ISDG.
quote: Question 3: If there were one thing you would have different for Apolyton in the game, what would it be? |
Wishes for Apolyton itself, like a better start, are no longer really relevant. I would like it if CGN and CFC were just a little smarter, though perhaps it's a blessing to have an unskilled neighbor regardless of the fact they're allies.
quote: Question 4: If you could change one thing about the team, what would it be? |
Tough question. Something to stop the bickering, but aside from altering the personalities of some of the people on this forum, I'm not sure how to accomplish that.

Question 1: Are you happy with how things have gone for Apolyton in the game?
We have done remarkly well, hardly putting a foot wrong in all the major decisions in the game. Our long term strategy are bearing fruit.
Question 2: Are you happy with how things are going for Apolyton the team?
Not in the last month or so. With all the bickering going on, it's no longer fun to read the threads. I haven't counted, but I must have skipped hundreds of posts.
Question 3: If there were one thing you would have different for Apolyton in the game, what would it be?
GCA not having incredible luck against CDG. The outcome of the game will be very different, we will not have to break our treaty with GCA, CDG will have captured GCA land and Poly would thrash CDG instead of GCA.
Question 4: If you could change one thing about the team, what would it be?
The Ministries having more power on the Game. More lurking members to join the Ministries to share the workload. Leave the Consuls to "high level" decision, or settle conflict between the Ministries. Not targeting anybody in particular, for eg. it's not really a Consul job to question which route the MOW/MOI choose to take from Point A to Point B, if the # of turns taken to reach the destination are the same.
Another point is - most of our Consuls now are "graduates" of the Ministries and they tend to take their work and mindset from the Ministries to their Consul role. The Consuls role however are very different. It's more of a oversee all ministries and make the final decision, but not doing the work themselves.
nye, many thanks for starting the thread. Allows lurkers like us to say we want to say.

Becoming the main power on our continent was no small feat. We're in a very awkward stage right now and I wish we could get out of it faster, but on the whole we've done very well at home.
We're right where we want to be diplomatically...no small feat either.
quote:

We're stagnating a bit. All the bickering in the past few months has been because we've got nothing more interesting to do. We're a second-rate power (for now), and that either makes people lose interest, or makes them squabble.
quote:
Question 3: If there were one thing you would have different for Apolyton in the game, what would it be?

Fairer starting locations. It sucks that so many teams were eliminated because they got shafted by mongoose: CDG, Grenouilles, Firaxis. The two teams in the top positions are the ones that got the best land.
quote:
Question 4: If you could change one thing about the team, what would it be?

I wish there was less animosity toward the other teams, both publicly and privately. This more than anything ruins the experience for me. It might just be that Lucky is not an a$$hole, nor all of GWT. The fact that we're angry at the very teams we're in conflict with is very telling; we thought CFC were a$$holes once upon a time, rememeber?
If solidarity is putting other teams down because it makes us feel good, I want no part of it.

Good idea for a thread, nye.
