When do we dissolve this unwieldy Despotism and "transition" (as I'm calling anarchy ) to Republic?
430 BC, turn after next, is the earliest workable time IMO. Sashimi's harbor will have completed, bringing lux to Japan and allowing iron to be sent back.
However, if we wait for 410 BC, we'll get another settler from Chow. And wait for 370 BC, and we'll have Feudalism should LL attack. I don't think the settler timing is particularly important, but I do think Feudalism could be should LL attack soon - not likely, but possible.
So, what should we do?
Some of the advantages of Rep, which we'd get sooner:
-The commerce bonus (but see military maintenance below)
-Lower corruption
-Tile production cap lifted. This means ability to mine hills for 3 spt each, plus more food from bonus food tiles. And we can receive the benefits of irrigation anywhere.
Some of the disadvantages of Rep:
-Unit maintenance. This will likely suck up most of the gains made in commerce through Rep.
-Lack of MP. We'll need to compensate for this with a 10% luxury slider, which will also use more of the commerce gains of Rep.
-War Weariness. However, I really think we should switch by the time we go on any offensive wars anyway (barring taking LL's western city triangle should they attack us over the next few turns), so this is not much of an issue IMO.
