Racism is evil. Anyone has the potential to be evil. Humans seperate, categorize and differentiate ideas/items/people for societal purposes. Most of the time, its done for good practices, for proper reasons, etc. However, when people do evil things, they use these "societal tools", that should be used for good purposes, for evil purposes.
Labels are just convienent methods to channeling hate. Without the words, the hate can still be there.

Theben,
quote: Yeah, but who was buying? Whites and arabs. |
So what? That doesn't reduce the responsibility of blacks for selling slaves.
Pax,
quote: It's stupid of you to say it's okay just because some or a lot of blacks were doing it. The major benefactors and the people running the middle passage where white. The blacks who were involved in the slave trade were fools. I doubt they would have done it if they new the consequences of their actions. Even if they would have done it regardless it was still wrong white or black. |
I'm not saying that it's OK. You're saying that blacks have a good reason to dislike white people because of the slave trade. Well, fine, by that same argument they also have a good reason to dislike black people. Sure, the blacks involved in the slave trade may have been fools, and it's always nice to argue that they didn't really know what they were doing, but come on
I'll repeat it one more time: If blacks are justified in hating white people because of the slave trade, then they should hate black people as well.
On the other hand, seeing as how no one alive today has been negatively impacted by the slave trade (and go ahead and try to prove otherwise), and given the fact that if not for the slave trade, a lot of black people today wouldn't be in the US, but rather back in some shithole Third World country (which doesn't justify slavery, so don't make that silly argument either), why don't we just say that whites have no good reason to hate blacks, and blacks have no good reason to hate whites. Is that OK with you?

They wouldn't have gone on long passages stuffed in dehumanizing conditions to a land that they were completely disconnected from, and the african continent wouldn't have suffered from the wars that were started for the sole purpose of getting more slaves, and the resultant devestation to the cultures from population loss, war, and shattered societies. |
Those that were sold into slavery were slaves already. Slavery did exist in Africa before the white man came you know.

Your argument is that it's africans fault for slavery. it's the indians fought for losing there land and it's the chinese fought that the british forced opium on them. The europeans are saints

No, that isn't my argument. My argument is that if you hate whites because of the slave trade, you might as well hate black people along with them.
Although come to think of it, YES! Africans DO bear some responsibility for the slave trade, as has already been pointed out numerous times by numerous people.

quote: Blacks are disenfranchised because they are the other in this society. |
What makes them "the other"? Because they have a different skin color? Yeah, right! Chinese, Japanese, Indians, etc. all have different skin tone, but do they get the same benefits from AA and othe quotas? No, because they are not "the other", so it can't be skin color... Hmmmm, lets think about this one a little further.
Could it be that they have this "gangsta" attitude towards their daily life (speaking about only those who use this N-word), or that this is how they are preceived?
Respect for a community begins with a community respecting themselves. Perhaps they do, but then why are many black dominant communities generally run down, drug filled, and full of violence? What kind of respect evolves from calling each other a word that my ancestors used as derogatory remark? What does that say? It says to me, a white male, that they have finally yielded to the opperssion that has been placed upon them over the hundreds of years that they were treated as though they where worth less than dirt!
Why not stick with "bother"? That was so much better.
quote: In any society there will be a group that is labeled as different. That's the way it works. |
So the blacks are going to relish in this difference despite the indifference? Also, I agree that this is the way it works. However, the chinese were once in the same position as the blacks were, why are the not in the same position that blacks are today? Could it be because they don't refer to themselves as chinks and demand respect, and actually move outside their cloistered communities and adapt?
quote: That's the way it works. The fact that you ask me to not use a word that was good enough for my father in the way he used it is to say sell what little of your subculture you have left. |
I am Dutch (more than 3/4 dutch), do you really want me to use the language of the slave trade? Than why do you?! My subculture is gone, why? BEcause I have accepted that things have changed, and I am not relishing on things that happened over a hundred years ago.
quote: It's like asking a chinese american to stop speaking chinese. |
Really, how many Bantu languages do black people know? How many black ppl even know what bantu is? I have raised the discussion of language as cultural influence many times, and honestly, I have never gotten a debate out of it so I am at a lost. Yet, I never hear a chinesse person use words to demean themsleves as it would relate to me... And I live in an asian community.,

Black ppl's opinions are ussually based out of anger (and rightfully so) and this leads to them being more racist than the average white person who is not from Idaho.... IMO, chinesse are the most racist of all nationalities in my area... The least; whites and vietnamesse |
I think whites are the least racist. Can you name any other race that had accepted so many other races into it's midst?

Those who moved to white countries are not representative of their race in this matter because they are a self-selecting sample. They are likely more accepting people than those in their home country.
