There was also a kid at a science fair somewhere in middle america who made a big list of the potentially hazardous effects of dihydrogen monoxide, and got people to sign a petition to ban it. All but one person at the fair signed it. I htink this is just an urban legend though.

I don't see why it would be a legend. Penn & Teller did this exact stunt on their TV show "Bullshit," going around at an environmental rally. They got hundreds of signatures.

I am an undergraduate chemistry student, and I don't remember it. Hydrogen Oxide is the correct name, IIRC, due to oxidation levels.

Nomenclature was never my strong part.

It reminds me a similar stunt, asking people on the street what should be done about a supposed conflict with Canada over the overharvesting of the Silverfish.
