I think every terrorist group is taking notes on this one. Al Qaeda hit the jackpot this time around.

The title. It got 2 points for the play on words from the first thread, though.

I think the title is a pretty spot-on appraisal of what has gone down in Spain. The terrorists did win...

Don't worry. I think this government will collapse sooner rather than later because it'll be based on an unstable coalition. The sooner, the better.

joncha, the fact is that Al-Queda will see it that way.

As will their allies, and all the small out-of-the-way places where they do their recruiting.

...and then there's the Basques, who are undoubtedly thinking, "just ten bombs on a couple trains gains THIS?"

Terrorists will attack whenever they have opportunity. If they think this will actually stop anti-terrorist measures by Spain or the U.S., they will have a rude awakening down the line.

Tired of ads?

The socialists in Spain are much more dedicated to ending terrorism than the United States. They realize that the only thing that will end terrorism is peace. Violence only begets more violence.

Again these are not real socialists, they are more capitalist than anything. You are in big denial. They were also the ones who started capitalist reforms in Spain.

Doing nothing does not prevent terrorism however. It only encourages the terrorists to attack. You cannot sing Cumbaya and try to dance with these terrorists because they won't sing with you.. you'd get shot. They are not peace loving nor do they care if you are at war. They want to destroy western civilization in its entireity. They don't care if somebody is sending troops to Iraq or not.

This new goverment will not stop anti-terrorist measures.

The socialist goverment will not collapse sooner than later. Just look at Catalonia.

It will however be based on a coalition. Are you really giving a coalition government that much credit of stability? In Italy there have been 47 governments, most of all been coalitions. One party falls out, the government loses its majority. What about the elections that come every two years? If the government loses it majority it would get a vote of no confidence I think. I predict that in two years.

What are you talking about? Elections to regional parlaments? I don't understand what you mean. (Perhaps because I live in Spain).

Okay I may have muddled a bit there... and may be getting a bit confused.. I am pretty sure there is an election of regional parliaments. If the PSOE loses its majority at that election, doesn't it get a vote of no confidence like in other countries?

I pretty sure you know it (like every spaniard knows), but I'm going to remember our not spanish friends something about our country:

Spain has 17 regions (and 2 autonom citys). These regions have their own parlament, elected every 4 years (some regions can anticipate elections).

PSOE has the goverment of: Asturias, Cataluña, Aragón, Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura.

PP has the goverment of: Castilla-León, La Rioja, Galicia, Cantabria, Baleares, Murcia, Canarias, Valencia and Madrid.

(PNV in Pais Vasco - Basque Country)

PSOE won in some regions when PP was in spanish goverment. I'm sure PP will win some regional elections in next 4 years, and some others not. And that will not be a vote of not confidence.
Diferent elections, diferent politics, diferent questions...

Yes but there will be a vote of no confidence if the PSOE loses its current majority which I strongly think it will.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Giancarlo: What makes a PSOE coalition any more or less stable than a PP coalition? And given that PSOE needs 11 more seats for an absolute majority, their position seems extremely stable. Also, you need to remember that the PP has run roughshod over it's coalition partners over the last few years, so it's not likely that the PP would have many friends in the Cortes.

I think that despite what people are saying, it's a victory for the Spanish people in that they made a decisive decision about where they want their government to go, policy wise, and how they want to present Spain to the world. There's nothing more democratic than that.

The PP didn't have a coalition nor did it need one. It had an outright majority.

No this is not a victory for the Spanish people. It is a stunning defeat for the nation and a victory for Al Qaeda.
