Strategy masters: please help this lamer Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

... Please judge the strategy I elaborated in the Civ3 Democracy Game. Basically, we are fighting with berzerkers and galleys against riflemen and ironclads.

I developed a plan to take Madrid, right next to our capital, across a small channel, but I have two problems: 1. I never play at deity level, and 2. I am a builder, and I reraly go to war against the odds.

I'll need all your help in devising a really great plan, and I'll appreciate it immensely if you could tell me of the shortcomings.

Thanks for the help

Ack. Deity. Going to war against the odds is not my forte either, Spiff.

Those ironclads are going to be a real problem. Any galleys caught in the open are toast, and your coastline is likely to get hit pretty hard. Hopefully the AI will help you out and concentrate on bombarding tiles around Madrid, instead of Asgard.

Does the enemy have Cavalry?

My advice is to PM Aeson about this. He'll know what to do.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

It's impossible to tell, although I would be surprised if they didn't, due to trades with other civs and already having tech far in advance of MT.

I very nearly typed that (or rather something like it). Aeson's advice would indeed be useful.

Eek. And the best defender you have is pikemen...

5 of them, according to the plan. So basically, the question is does Spain enough cavalry in position to counterattack Madrid.

Hmm. Odds are they have a decent number of cav, it's their precise locations that are key to this. Your pikes will not have a chance to fortify, so they will just get the 50% defense bonus for the size 7+ city, making them 4.5 defenders. So I'd expect that it should take 5-8 cavalry to kill your pikes, and then they're into your Berserks, which should die badly vs. Cav (especially since they will most likely all be wounded).

I don't have any Deity experience, so I've no way of knowing whether or not Spain can muster 5-10 cavalry for immediate counterattack on Madrid. Good luck.

-Arrian

edit: one other thing. I note that Spiff says catapults will be mostly useless in pressing your attack against Spain, and thus will be best used as coastal anti-ironclad bombardment defense. Sure, but if you can't quite fill all your galleys with pikes (if you have 5 pikes, that's at least 1 extra unit of space on a galley that could be filled), I'd say bringing a cat or two along could help you hold Madrid, not only for the immediate counterattack, but also to help ping down the Stack of Doom Spain will inevitably send (I'm guessing you will see a large number of rifles and med inf/longbows, and assorted other crapola).

So maybe bringing a couple of cats would be smart...

Indeed, it sounds the smartest thing to do, I didn't think about that.

We should have enough room to bring our cats to Madrid on the turn of the attack, so thay could be very useful in wounding the cavalries as they attack, for sure

This is an MP game is it not? In that case the level is not important except for barbs. If you have only humans in the game anyway. It will impact the tech, but it is the same for all.

Got spare money?

Yup, SP Demogame here. Otherwise I don't think they'd be that far behind, tech-wise.

Not sure I understand the difference. In either form if all civs in the game are control by humans, then no one has a bonus.

In either form if you have civs controlled by the AI, then you get the bonus for the AI and the level will matter. Those near an AI civ will be at a big disadvantage potentially.

All Civs bar ours are managed by the AI (Single Player DemoGame means that we all manage one Civ against the AI - it doesn't mean one person manages each Civ)

And if it was against a human, I wouldn't have posted my strategy in the open

Full PM-box? Change here!

So you are saying you are playing one civ with no team mates and others are doing the same with some civs being AI. Or are you saying you and others run one civ and all other civs are AI controlled?

The latter, I do believe. One non-AI civ, being run by everybody who's playing as a team.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Is it possible to set up a diversion to the North, which would attract the Calvary? If you create a diversion on the 2-3 turns prior to taking Madrid, the Calvary will be too far to immediately counterattack your forces in Madrid. This would give you time to fortify.

Also it may be wise to simply destroy Madrid. I realize you would lose the Wonder, but if you cannot hold it then you must destroy. It would be a shame to take Madrid and then watch it revert back to Spain.

Thats my two cents worth.
