Yes, of course. Is Doom still considered a great game? You don't think it will be in another 20 years?

I don't think HL will have the same legs as Doom-and I don;t think Doom will have much legs much longer.

Now we see the degrading minds of DOOM supporters.

Sure, people have fond memories of DOOM,. but are there updated versionws of it? The core constituency of DOOM is moving on (to things like HL). SMB3 will truck on further. HL has even less personality. Great engine and great multiplayer, but the game itself?

DOOM was just a shell around the FPS genre; after a year, it was replaced, most recently by the Halo craze.

DOOM 3 will be a new game-when I mean updated version, I mean making it possible to play the very DOOM on new systems-though DOOM being a computer game it is not AS bad as with a console game.

Many will agree that no FPS since Doom really has quite the atmosphere and charm, with the possible exception of HL.

SMB definitely has personality, and some cute charm to it. However, the reason I dislike it is the gameplay, which remains the primary thing - and those walk-around-scrolling screen, no-save, eat-mushrooms, stomp-turtles games were never my thing.

I owned both, and FPS are not my thing either, which is why I am partial to SMB3 personally.

But beyond that, SMB3 was the first Megahit for any videogame- I mean, it is the game that made people think that maybe this whole videogame thing was more than child's play, the real money was involved. While I am sure many gamers remeber DOOM! fondly, in terms of significance to the video game world, it is small compared. Plus, I think the FPS format is one in which technology quickly makes old versions lose much of their appeal, while SMB3 is closer to Tetris, the sort of game that is so basic, you can;t in many ways improve....yet not so basic as to be pong.

So Mario beat out Doom? That's strange, yesterday Doom was still in the lead.

Mario did not convince people that video games were more than kids toys. Mario convinced people that the console game industry was here to stay and that appealing to children was the wave of the future.

Doom will be remembered just as much as SMB3 is. I guess it depends if you are a console/PC guy. Console guys will go for SMB3, PC users will go to the big daddy of them all, Doom.

I dunno, I was always a console guy, I have more fond memories of the MegaDrive than the PC, yet I'd still go for Doom. It started me of FPS, before I moved on (and stayed) at Quake. Half-Life was too new for me. Quake is still my favourite FPS, even after all these years, and a lot of time on Unreal Tornament. Quake multiplaying is just so worked down to a T, like strafe jumping and timings, it just seems more intense somehow.

Doom was good, exceptional at the time, but on quality of game, Quake has it beaten. Even on impact, IMHO. Quake started the internet FPS gaming, IMHO, which is much bigger than the SP game.

doom is open source and wild on the net it will live a very long time. there are now free deathmatch and co-op servers online for doom(something the original didn't even have!) along with new graphics engines and netcode. doom still has a fairly large community that plays it and also makes maps. mario will live on longer too because of emulators but not nearly as long as doom since it isn't being improved upon or added to. hard to say which will live longer and have a bigger fanbase but i know for sure the doom fanbase is more devoted at the moment.

Too many games in the title fight lost out to weaker games. People mentioned games like Fallout 2, Deus Ex, Starcraft (how could D2 beat starcraft), Civ Series. Although Civ got into the final, the others deserved to be there too.

Yeah, Duke Nuken and Half-Life are the only decent FPS games.

Wolfenstein and Doom are bland, unimaginative, and unappealing.
