The Europeans would be better off launching on Russian rockets. Really.

Even American rockets would be cheaper in many configurations, which means that Ariane V is way out of line.

The rocket the Russians wanted to use for their moon launch was about as big, the N1:

Here is a site with a nice set of size comparisons:

It's not the size that matters, it's how you use it. They didn't make it to the moon, did they?

It wasn;t rocket size and power that kept them out of the moon, if that is what you mean.

Now that's a worthy competitor, GePap. Hats off to the Russkiis.

Unfortunately for them, it blew up four times in a row. Tough luck in the rocket biz. Saturn V = 100% success. N1 = 0% success.

talking about putting sattilites in orbit then:
energia rockets are bigger and badder than the saturn V. and the sojoez rockets are the best rockets out there even the adriane 4 and 5 arent as good as the russian rockets. the delta rockest of the US are good...but the space shuttle suckes.

The Soyuz (the booster, not the capsule) is a pretty damn good rocket. 100% success in 150 launches demonstrates that fact.

But who would want to launch from Kazakhstan rather than Florida? No contest.

Also, Falcon V is slated to fly for a third the price per pound of the Soyuz. I've got my fingers crossed.

Ariane launches in Suriname. You can go for a little side-trip to the carnavals in Rio De Janeiro if you time the launch well.

Face it Colon, Russians and Ukrainians are the only Europeans with the imagination it takes to build something like this. We stole all the remaining imagination fair and square.
