Personally I would prefer a level of autonomy not allowed by the mercenary lifestyle. I wouldn't be opposed to fighting for cash, but just not as our sole focus.

We fight for our surivival, and for the survival of the human race. We are happy to help the weaker factions in return for the spoils of war.

As for government structure - anyone can join BEFORE the game, and is a CITIZEN, and can be elected to high millitary ranks by other citizens.

Anyone joining late has to do five years service in the armed forces of their choosing (they are attached to an actual millitary unit on the map, and if they die, they are dead) after which they become a Citizen and can vote.

How about that?

I think we need a short simple survivalists constitution too.

Be ware of what you are getting into people!!! You will not be granted the right to take part in faction decisions until your faction meet and fight another faction for 5 years!!! That means first nobody will likely to be friendly toward your faction because people understands your anxiousness to participate. Second you will not be actually participating until ... uh ... 2130!!!

And think about that martial law! Which will be overriding anything else. Are you going to actually throw yourself at the mercy of a cruel and coldhearted man who changes his mood every day and night?

That would be good for roleplaying, but I hope you don't mean new members wouldn't be allowed to vote in polls for five in-game mission years? Such a thing is bound to scare off new potential members.

I agree with Skanky Burns. Acting as mercenary would be fun, and winning the game certainly shouldn't be the top goal - rather having fun should be. Though keeping a level of autonomy seems wise too. Still I think the Spartans will come closest to your idea. The Angels have said they'll try to do deals between all other factions, but a) that will probably only involve info and techs, not military support, and b) all factions will of course try to get the best deals and manoeuver between other factions if that's best for them - not only the Angels.

OK, let people vote during their millitary service, but unable to hold government positions untill after they have proved they are tough enough. How does that sound?

Remember, if only 3 teams are in this DG, within a month a newbie is citizen then. I think it takes about that time to get familiar with a new faction (for real newbies off course).

OOC: I think Jamski's proposed model would be quite good, although it might be better to make the time-limit based o the real world rather than the game... say, a week or two? That would prevent slow progress from keeping people out of participation.

As for the mercenary thing... sounds like a good idea, but not as the team's sole purpose. We'd build up an army that was sustainable, use it to attack people as we were paid to do, and use it as we wished the rest of the time.

And another idea for what to do when no-one wanted us to attack other factions: get oruselves a few rovers with Empath Song, train them up to Elite level, and send them around dealing with people's worm problems. The Morganites might like that when they started polluting a lot... just let a few worm-hunters hang about near your monoliths (or bases, if Pacted), and whenever there was a pop, watch the worms burn. The planetpearls alone would make it a very lucrative business.

btw would be fun...if after awhile (when we have enough units)we each be assigned one unit we can control...? this well make the roleplaying a lot more fun...you can control where you unit goes to as long as it doesnt cause something bad for the faction. if your unit is destroyed you will be the only survivor and after getting out of sickbay get a new unit assign?

could even make battle report per unit if you want to...and the rest of the units will be controlled by high command
