	Xbox 2 specs unveiled Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Xbox 2 (codenamed "Xenon") is going to be announced June 2nd, 2004.

Some crucial information has been leaked (and confirmed). Long story short, I don't think Sony has a chance to compete with the Xbox 2, in terms of performance.



Yes, that is a tri-core variation of IBM's PowerPC 976 (dual-core, multi-threaded). The PowerPC 976 is a much improved version of the PowerPC 970, which is what the Apple G5 is.

3 3.5GHz+ cores, 500MHz+ R500-based GPU (at least 16 fully functional DX10 graphics pipelines), 10MB of EDRAM, 256MB+ of 22.4GB/s system RAM.

Wow.

Also, note the inclusion of the hard disk...

I don't get it. If you show a block diagram of the PS2 -- a CPU connected to a northbridge connected to some RAM, connected to a video chip, people should say "hmm. computer". But they don't.

For some reason it's only the Xbox people think is a computer. Perhaps because it used x86. Xbox2 is using PowerPC, though (which is what the Gamecube used).

Who said the Xbox2 in no way resembles a computer? I've said this point blank -- all game consoles are computers. It's what they do. Game consoles are specialized computers -- nothing more, nothing less.

And the Xbox2 looks to definitely blow the competitors right out of the water. Just like the Xbox did to the Gamecube and PS2.

You all seem to forget that the most impressive systems as far as technical specifications are concerned do not always do the best in the shops. Games companies want their products to sell, so they are unlikely to do games for a less popular machine just because its hardware would allow them to make a superior game.
It will all eventually come down to the fickleness of the general public: as it always does.

I won't buy it HOWEVER good it is, unless it comes with a mouse and a keyboard, and I can buy stuff to stick inside it to make it better.

i.e. a REAL computer, instead of a gimped box for kids who can't handle "complicated man's stuff" like installing a programme from CD.

From what I've heard people in Europe convert Xbox's to desktops because it's cheaper to buy an Xbox than it is a desktop.

Anyone can verify this?

I don't think that it will be all that expensive. Remember that X-Box 1 is selling for less than it costs to build it. Consols make thier money off the games.

The original Xbox cost $400 too, they just sold it at the same price as the PS2.

MS knows it'd be suicide to sell it above the PS3's pricerange. Ditto for the Xbox/PS2. Whenever the PS2 dropped in price, the Xbox did as well.

Hell, right now the Xbox costs less than the PS2, but costs way more to produce.

Consoles are not PCs, and they don't pretend to be.

I'm happy for you that you won't buy a console until it becomes a PC, but unfortunately for you, the vast majority of gamers these days are actually console gamers.

So nice troll attempt, but all it does is show that you don't understand anything about why consoles exist. You remind me of the 12-year-old fanboys on the IGN forums who keep blasting the Xbox because "it's just a PC, it sux0rs".

i'm not sure i believe this. how could they possibility afford this? i know microsoft is sitting on billions but i thought they are making the xbox to make money. wouldn't these units cost $500+ to make(let alone sell)? that system also seems lopsided with way too much cpu power but not enough ram/graphics muscle(unless i'm not understanding it correctly).

It'll probably cost around $400 to make, go on sale for $299.

I don't think it'd cost too much to make. When you buy parts in the millions, you get a price discount. The time this will go into production is mid-to-late 2005, and the chips will be made on the new 65nm process which makes the chips smaller and cheaper, and integrating 3 CPUs into one die will also reduce cost.

Sorry Asher, but it is a bit difficult to deny the fact that console gamers are more likely to pick up Doom or Unreal Tournament than they are Deus Ex (1, not that fakeDeusEx that presends to be the second one) or SMACX

I have a hard time believing Deus Ex 1 sold more on Playstation than on PC. I hear the port was not great at all.
But I can *easily* believe Deus Ex 2 sold more on consoles. Considering it was made for XBOX and ported to PC

The game ran like crap on my then-state-of-the-art P3 600 w/ TNT2 Ultra 32MB.

what is edram?

is that a regular dvd drive or hd-dvd drive or what?

Looking at those specs, I can't imagine myself owning a more powerful pc than that in 3 years, let alone a console with that much firepower.
