There's a thing I've been wondering about for quite a while. On maps of the EU you always see several overseas EU territories like Guyana, Canarias, etcetera. But why are other British and French territories such as the Falkland Islands, French Polynesia, the Kergueles (totally wrong spelling - those islands in the South-Indian Ocean thereabouts) never included? Do they have some special semi-independent status or so? |
I dont know maniac, I believe its purely a technical issue on drawing the maps. Some of the maps didnt include Finland either for example.
Anyway we had fun on the pique-nique, some japanese tourists took photos of us. The onion-pie and the parmesane-olive-paprika pie was incredibly tasty, not to mention the salads, home made batons, and the baked potatoes (rosamunda). Wine was also good as always.
We got sms-messages from all over the europe, this is what the united europe is all about. Being in constant touch with people on the same continent is no different from knowing people from the city nearby.
Go Europe!

'Out' wouldn't mean IMO that you would be against us or vice-versa, however, I do feel it would make things easier, any which way. |
I see less and less difference every day between Europeans and Americans. I dislike flag-waving crap, mindless obidience and exhortations that we need to be strong for strengths sake.
Britain's got a special status of 'troublemaker' in the EU. This is not particularly justified; all the countries start trouble. It's like the difference between working class 'thugs' and middle class 'boys will be boys'.
It's likely that regardless of what Britain does, it will still be regarded as troublemaker. Even if it left the EU altogether, it would still be viewed with the same shifty-eyed suspicion as it is now. 'If only they left' would be replaced by 'if only they hadn't left'. Everything would still be Britain's fault.
I don't deny that British peoples attitudes towards Europe are neither well-informed nor rational. However, I also consider the views of the rest of Europe to be pretty similar, both regarding Britain's undeserved badboy status and their views on Europe. Glory, power, strength and other nationalistic desires are at least as dangerous as Britain's petty xenophobia.

Not by our own standards, but that doesn't really count now does it?
Our directness and honousty (even when the truth is not pretty) are sometimes seen as rather inappropriate and rude in countries where people are less... direct
As is also testified in this top 10:
quote: Top 10 reasons for being Dutch:
1) You can get arrested for growing plants, but not for smoking them.
2) You can make jokes about the Belgians and still drink their beer.
3) a. You can legally kill yourself b. You can legally be killed.
4) You're exactly like the Germans, except that nobody hates you.
5) You think you are a world power, but everyone else thinks Copenhagen is your capital...
6) You get to insult people and defend yourself by saying it's a national tradition.
7) You can put your finger in a dyke and it will save your country.
8) You live in the most densely populated country in Europe, and still you've never seen your neighbours.
9) If the economy is bad, blame the Germans. If a war is started, blame the Germans. If you lose your keys, blame the Germans.
10) Bikes are public property. Locks are a challenge. |
Edit: dyke is censored? Oh well, works in this case
