Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

UPDATE - 295 to 290 b.c.

Middle East

In a surprise move Persia has declared war on Carthage!
At night an armada of 368 triremes with almost 30,000 armed men on board has entered Carthagian waters, heading for the Cyrenaica.

However, the Carthagian fleet was patrolling the area very carefully, as it had the strict order to protect the country against a naval invasion!

As the battle emerged, both sides fought furiously. The Carthagians, outnumbered and with the smaller ships, used their lightness and speed to outmanoeuver the heavily loaded big Phoenician warships, who couldn´t fight the opponent effectively because of their weight.

Taking big losses the Persians finally broke through and disembarked what was left from the invasion force, while the Carthagian triremes kept on sinking their enemy´s vessels one by one, thus drowning both crew and boarded troops. When the Persians got rid of their overweight at the African beaches, they turned around and engaged in combat; This way both sides lost a large part of their navies, but though the Persians succeeded in landing an invasion force, the price was quite high... (See end of post for details)

Once on solid ground, the Persian army quickly took the undefended cities of Cyrene and Barca, with only little resistance met since the locals are native Cyrenaicans, so their allegiance doesn´t belong to any side in the conflict.

Meanwhile, in Persia herself, the great king keeps on reforming the economy and administration of the country. So far the campaign has resulted in a fair increase in annual income.
Together with the lucrative metal mines of Attus, which is growing bigger and bigger as time goes by, the Persian income is the biggest in the world!

In a giant effort the Persian secret police managed to capture some members of the Judaean Secret Society of Jerusalem. Massive bribes have finally led to an anonymous hint leading the agents to the HQ of the troublemakers. However, due to good funding by the opposing side not much could be achieved from interrogations. But at least the Persians now know the Society is supported by Carthage, and much money and supplies have been transferred from there.

Tributes:
Egypt hasn´t paid tributes yet, they seem to be under Carthagian influence...
As the garrisons in Asia minor have been enlarged, the local Satrapies pay more tribute; It accumulates to 33 talents and 12 triremes.

Greece and Asia Minor

Macedonia
Resting outside the obliterated town of Tragurion, Alexander´s army and its allies have built a decent fortification against the Illyrian Barbarians. With this protection the craftsmen and settlers of Macedonia could quickly rebuild the town to a centre of fishing. Since almost none of the original inhabitants were still alive, the new population consists of mainly Macedons, which is helping the cultural assimilation of the entire area.

The armies are being trained seperately under the sharp eye of the Macedonian king, whose family is also residing in the usual army tents just outside Tragurion.

Meanwhile, near Amphipolis, a royal construction team has finally begun mining the huge gold vein. After establishing a road network and stabilizing the shaft, the first miners started their work. Soon large amounts of gold ore were transported to the melting furnace where it could be transformed into shiny coins.
The whole area is prospering, and the gold is attracting migrants (as well as criminals)...

Meanwhile a group of architects, artisans and craftsmen has left for Persia, where they will help in the construction of the "Trigamids"...

Lydia

When Macedonia ceded the Islands of Lesbos and Chios to Lydia as a gift, the Lydians rejoiced! Now they had the Aegian ports they needed, and also fertile grounds to grow the food for their evergrowing population...

Italian peninsula

Dictator Laurentius has finally reinstated the Senate as the highest authority of Rome when he retired after four decades of rule. Honoring his achievements he was gifted a huge villa complex at the countryside...

The two new colonies of Florentia and Bononia have been founded in the recently conquered territories of Etruria. This will help expanding Roman influence over the entire area, as well as creating new markets for the goods of the capital. With the road connection to the other Roman citites the two new towns will grow quickly and hopefully prosper in peace.

When three of the four legions were sent to secure the area known as "Gallia Cisalpina" south of the Padus river, they didn´t expect too much resistance by the locals. However, several new tribes seem to have come from the north crossing the Alpes, and all of them were more then willing to fight for every piece of land in the warm and fertile valley.
So the legions weren´t able to claim all of that area, but at least the coastal parts could be taken by force. Losses have been rather light, but the ongoing raids and ambushes by the Gauls and Aquilaeans have considerably decelerated the Roman advance.

In the spring of the year 291 b.c. a huge Gaul army has invaded the Western parts of Liguria, advancing further south to the coast where it finally fought the Magna Graecian garrison.
After heavy casualties the defenders had to retreat into the city of Massilia, calling for help by their allies, while the Gauls are ravaging the lands between Massilia and Nicaea.
Liguria has sent an envoy to Rome calling for immediate assistance, while the city of Pisae with its surroundings has accepted the Roman offer and joined the growing Republic.
Magna Graecia has joined the Roman-Ligurian alliance and sent the "Apulian Guards" (5,000 hoplites) to Florentia.

Western Mediterranean

After the Persian invasion of the Cyrenaica the Carthagian population was shocked. Now the new war has initiated a wave of "patriotism", many young men are enrolling, forming an army of 7,000 volunteers (light infantry).
Another 3,000 volunteers have arrived from Egypt after years of secret support; Those have been added to the Cyrenaican army.

Although the fall of the two Cyrenaican towns couldn´t be prevented, the Persian invasion force is now trapped between the desert, the ocean and two enemy armies.

Despite the outbreak of war the construction of the "Guardian of the West" continues. Thick ropes are used to elevate the large bronze plates to the middle parts of the statue, and both locals and travellers watch in awe everytime another piece is installed. It´s a wonder nobody got killed yet in an accident...

OMFG the barbarians are multiplying! Can even the combined armies with superior tactics survive from almost 90 000 barbs!?

Surprise moves by Persia! Were the Carthagians really behind the "jewish secret society"? Very conspiratory...

Tass, how exactly should I bank your income? You´re not a country, so you can´t bank money. All funds you don´t use go back to Macedonia... To solve this, you could set up a vassal country and swear allegiance to Macedonia...
Or, if you ask me pretty nicely, I could consider splitting Macedonia´s bank account in two...

Macedonia to Athens :

So be it. [OOC: I'll just leave it in the treasury]

to Carthage :

We will not aid you. your conflict is your own.

To Rome :

We propose an alliance for the duration of this Carthaginian-Persian war, to ensure that our countries do not get unnecessarily drawn into the conflict, and to protect our trade.

The king has ordered the founding of a new city, named Adrianopolis, to be located in Thrace, northwest of Byzantium. The city will have a barracks, where the Army of Macedon will be stationed, an administrative district where the city’s bureaucrats will work and live, and administer the countryside, as well as a market district and site for a temple complex. The city will be laid out in such a fashion that further expansions and improvements can be made easily and efficiently. Adrianopolis, as noted, will serve as the military and administrative center of the region, as well as a convenient place for merchants, artisans, and resource traders from Macedonia, Athens, Moesia, other provinces and other countries to convene.

Expenditures
5 talents for peasant aid.
40 talents to Athens treasury [debt paid, 24 talents already in treasury, for a total of 64 talents held for Athens]
52 talents to found city of Adrianopolis
1 talent for 200 light infantry to keep order in the gold mining camp

Military Orders
Move the Army of Macedon to Adrianopolis.
The Army of Alexander will engage the nearby barbarians (leave the siege weapons in Tragurion). Use horsemen as scouts to ensure that none of the barbarians slip around and can get to Tragurion. If they do, move the army to defend the city.

Carthaginian Government Poll
This is to be answered by all Carthaginian people that can join the military, men or women, and everyone older.

Question One: What is your discontent with Carthage?

Question Two: Do you support the war with Persia?

Question Three: Would you like Carthage to become more democratic?

Question Four: How do you feel about the progress of the "Guardian of the West?"

Question Five: Only answer Question five and six if you are a volunteer. Are you considering become a full time military solider? If so, what kind? If not, why not?

Question Six: Would you rather defend the costal cities, or attack on the front lines?

OOC: Very Tassadar-esque

Macedonia to Carthage :

Women...voting? Equal rights? IN THE MILITARY? We hear you are even asking your troops where they would like to fight. Is this true? Your nation is very odd. The Athenians, wise and good friends that they are, may the gods smile upon them, have strange enough customs. You know what happened to them as a result of their "democracy" before they got it under control: Turmoil, mob rule, rampant ostracism, a lost war. Why would you give up your rule for that? How will your people know what to do? At the very least we hope you are extending this democracy to only your citizens. And good luck fighting a war with women in the army. Well, your people are not like ours, but the best of luck to you anyway.
