UPDATE - 300 to 295 b.c.
Middle East
When the Persian secret police arrived at Jerusalem, the "Jewish conspiracy group" was nowhere to be found. However, two secret agents have been abducted and later on killed by members of the secret society of Judaean Jews. The group has gained much support amongst locals, especially since the Persians officially fight them.
There have been many meetings in secret , and the militants are well-armed with latest equipment. There must be some source of money for them, maybe nearby, but maybe even abroad...
Down at the Western coast of the Sinai peninsula, the great king has founded a new colony named Attur. While food is rare at that place, the mountain chains in the region hold vast resources of copper, gold and iron!
Right now, the mining town has only a few hundred inhabitants, for it is tough to get people settling there in the desert... However, even small amounts of precious metals generate a respectable income...
One setback though is the very hostile stance of the local tribes. Somehow they refuse contact with Persia and insist in a Persian withdrawal from the land of their ancestors. Also many Arabic peoples in the region behave similarily. Strange, such grade of coordination is quite uncommon amongst these tribes...
While the empire expands and the Jews start making trouble in Palaestina, the Persian army intesifies its training program. In fact, todayīs officiers have a far better education and military training than their predecessors, which results in better discipline amongst the troops and better performance at non-standard tactics.
Tributes:
Egypt paid 18 talents in war indemnities; Other tributes add up to 21 talents
Greece and Asia Minor
Macedonia
When the old king Antigonus died, his son Demetrius immediately took power. Since his policy was quite the same as his fatherīs, the population accepted him, though he had yet to prove his qualities. The military had sworn loyality to Alexander, back then in the old days, not to Macedonia. Amongst the soldiers he had to earn respect by action, not by title...
A first royal act was the incorporation of the almost completely destroyed town of Lissos into the kingdom. With quite some funding the most important quarters could have been rebuilt, giving the locals a base to recover. Those who survived the barbarian slaughter are vastly disappointed of their former protectors in Magna Graecia, since they didnīt even bothered placing a garrison in the town. So most people here are supporting the change to Macedonian rule...
The Macedonian army had reached Tragurion quite quickly, despite the siege equipment they were taking with them.
The Illyrian highlanders werenīt used to defending towns, but they decided to do so anyways. Now Tragurion has no fortifications, and being situated at the coast with mountains at the back it wasnīt a strategically good place either. Still, the highlanders fought with valour.
During the battle the Macedonian catapults destroyed almost all buildings within the town, and when the Illyrians finally drew back they torched what was left of this place. Civilians... a few have fled to the mountains, but most have been killed. After eight days the settlement was completely obliterated, but the Illyrians had to take heavy casualties, which was far more important for the Macedonian general.
Advancing further north would have stretched the supply lines too far, and the territories conquered by now arenīt secured either. So the army erected a camp at the ruins of the town and is now awaiting further orders.
To the south, Alexandrograd is developing quickly into a major economic center of northern Egypt. With the improving infrastructure a healthy aristocratic population has settled near the temple complexes, further boosting income to the region.
Now the city even has its own guard unit, a mighty phalanx of hoplites! The citizens are truely proud of their hometown.
Aegian Sea
With the peace treaty of Delos, all islands north of that town have been returned to Macedonian rule. With no warships left, piracy has stopped completely, while Crete spends much money on building up the already very large harbour (and the wharves) at Delos.
Lydia
Italian peninsula
With the end of the martial law in Rome, when dictator Laurentius stepped back from power and retired, the citizens of the Republic entered a golden age of culture! Although the official funds allocated to the Circus maximus project werenīt covering the costs, rich patricians donated the missing talents.
Rome was now a thriving metropolis and together with Athens the cultural center of the known world.

With seventhousand fresh soldiers the four legions have been reinforced to full strength, and they are now securing the remnants of Etruria. Especially up in the hills there is a strong anti-Roman sentiment, leading to several ambushs on supply wagons, which has cost the army some efficiency...
The former dictatorīs legion has been chasing the Etrurian army for several months, finally encountering it in the hills close to the po valley. With numerical superiority of 12 to 1 the Romans won the battle, although the Ethruscians didnīt surrender but put up quite a fight! With minor losses the legionaries charged into the hill camp, completely annihilating the last organized resistance to the north.
The Aquileans seem to have left for good, but many of the chieftains in the valley are hostile towards Roman expansion. With the Macedonians advancing along the Illyrian coast, the many tribes in the region are pressing eastward, crowding the fertile valleys of upper italy and even advancing further south into the peninsula. This might lead to future conflicts....
Western Mediterranean
In Carthage the people seem to relax after the trouble of the past years. While the army is continuing its training program, Greek philosophers are teaching in the capital of the Punic empire. There are even some Athenican schools, spreading their knowledge amongst the younger generation.
Meanwhile at Carthago Nova the "Guardian of the West" is slowly growing to reckognizable shapes. Now both legs have been finished, shining in the morning sun above the harbour entrance.
The merchants and local citizens are getting an impression on what the finished statue would look like, and they even start discussion possible mythological meanings of the project...

Rome to Ligurians
Ave! This is Appius Claudius speaking. I am one the two consuls appointed by the senate after Laurentius Aemilus had stepped down. There will be a formal notification of the normalisation of the republic order soon. Nevertheless Laurentius is not the de-facto head of state anymore and all future foreign relations are going through me.
The Senate and the people of Rome are very grateful for the support we have recieved from you in our continuing efforts to pacify Northern Italy. However the greatest threat still remains, the gallic horde is situated just few hundred miles from your cities and they could attack you whenever they wish to do so. They are also a great threat to us as well as the Magna Graecians. Therefore we have decided to form a "coalition of the willing" to unite our forces in the North and annihilate this horde and bring peace, prosperity and freedom to all Italian peoples. We are asking you to join our legions and do the right thing.
The senate has decided to spend 14 talents to connect your cities with roman roads, built schools, improve agriculture and train up your warriors up to the latest strategies if you agree. Of course this will just be the modest start in case you decide to join our Italian Republic. Other benefits include, Roman citizenship, guaranteed security, lots of federal money, free trade, exclusive markets for the products your most skilled im making in the empire, port facilities, annihilation of the pirate fleet et cetera. What do you say?
Vale Bene!

Yeah, youīre right... Well I knew I forgot something
The thing is that Photoshop screwed up two times today, so after an hour I was quite eager to finish the job as soon as possible
quote: To Lydia :
Of course, your valor and foresight deserves compensation. But we do have our own needs in the Aegean. Would you settle for just Lesbos and Chios? [OOC: I assume Im not giving away anything I held before the war] |
OOC: Well, those have been Attic Islands, you annexed them together with Athens...
Lydia to Macedonia
That is acceptable! We are most grateful to call such a mighty neighbour our closest friend!
quote: To Magna Graecia :
We would be happy to return the
remainders of your towns. A pity you didnt defend them better. You owe us 32 talents for our rebuilding efforts. And of course you must repurchase the land that new settlers have taken, which should probably be not more than 1 or 2 talents. Consider the expenses we incurred in retaking the towns for you a gift. They will be transferred back to you upon payment of the fees listed. And our allies are our business, not yours. We must say they fought more valiantly for Lissos and Tragurion than you managed to do. But of course that is neither here nor there, could not be avoided, most regrettable. Were sure no one is left to blame you holds that against you. Good day. |
Magna Graecia to Macedonia
We thank you for reconquering the towns, but it wasnīt anything we asked you for. Your investments into the developement of the area are appreciated, but it changes nothing about the situation.
Please return those lands to us.
quote: EDIT :
OOC: Which islands did we loose that we have yet to get back? |
Basically all of the Islands under Cretean control except for Crete itself
Including Delos, Naxos, Cos, Melos and Thera

Roman Republic
a.d. XI Id. quintilis 291
The Days of Glory
The war in Etruria was officially declared over in May 291. 3rd June the legions and their commanders marched via Aurelia Vetus to Rome in triumph. 26 000 legionaries, 6 000 men on horse, over 4 000 foot soldiers, thousands of enslaved enemies, hundred chariots of spoils of war, enemy standards, swords, helmets, shields. The procession was 30 miles long!
The senate had declared the day and the folowing week public holiday and grandiose celebrations had been prepared for weeks. People were flocking to see the procession and priests blessed the legionaries and their commanders. The smell of incense was so strong that some people faint. The doors in the temple of Vesta had been shut once again to mark the peace that had been fought for.
The ultimate destination being the Forum Romanum and the Temple of the Juppiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitolium hill were all light up by thousands of large torches. And as the night fell the sight was absolutely astounding. Once the triumphants arrived at the Forum they were greeted by the elders of state, the senators. Speeches were made praising the Roman and their allies valour oand superior tactics. Official sacrificies were made by the priests and the high ranking officials. Then came the time for the triumphant to say few words..
All things come to an end
"Dear Romans, I have been honoured to serve the republic for 39 consecutive years with the rights of a dictator. I was invested with this highest judical authority by the senate because the state was in emergency. Our homes were first threatened by the Umbrians, then the Samnians and later the Etruscans. Those immediate threats no longer exist. Ergo, from this day on, there will be no military tribunals, no marshall law, no dictator. Just You the people, and the senate and comitium to serve you. The will be two consuls appointed by the senate as there used to be, there will be public accountability and the people will be able to vote and have their say on how the affairs of the state are being run. The freedom will, as of now, be restored.
I was a dictator for far longer than anyone had predicted. Not even the founding fathers of our republic ment anyone to be on this post for as long as four decades. Some people have been accusing me for trying to destroy the republic, of wanting to be the king. But let me assure you that it was never in my interest to seek power or wealth to myself. In every decision I took, I always placed the interest of the nation before mine. I sware this through my dead son and the thousands of soldiers who perished while making this day possible. I thank you for all these years and humbly step down and according to the 12 table laws shall never seek public office again. Romans, now it is your turn to celebrate! Let the festivities begin!"
Thankful senate
After the week long celebrations, the senators once again met in one of the many parks of Rome, this time at the Horti Torquantiani.
Laurentius Aelius wasnt present but looking after his small garden near his house on the Palatium hill. The senate decided that this was not adequate for a hero so a proposal was made to build a villa for Laurentius near the village of Narnia just 20 miles outside of Rome. The proposal was unanimously approved.

Villa Laurentiana, Narnia
Other pressing affairs of the state
Now the senate had to appoint two consuls and someone to command the Legion I Romana, also the army needed a chief of staff. The two consuls were agreed to be Appius Claudius and Spurius Cassius. the Legion I Romana command was given to Publius Cornelius Scipio he was also made the chief of staff. This was because of his extraordinary talents and the references from Laurentius. With the command of 2 legions and the overall command of the army it was hoped Scipio would be able to see the big picture more easily.
Senate also decided to start to build the "coalition of the willing" to pacify the Northern Italy. Wich ment getting rid of the 47 000 gallic warriors. To achieve this efforts were agreed to be made to try to strengthen the alliance between the Ligurians and the Greeks in the South. Since they had even more at stake than the Romans had, convincing them was not believed to be a difficult task. The Senate agreed to found two new colonies for the retired soldiers and to secure the Nothern Etruria. Florentia was to be found on the border with the Ligurians and Bononia was to be found North-West of Ariminium. The legions were ordered to seure the area South of river Po and fortify their positions there. To guard the South border Legion II Italica was ordered to the Fort Latina.
Orders
- spend spend 14 talents to connect New colonies and Ligurian cities with roman roads, built schools, improve agriculture in Liguria and train up Ligurian warriors up to the latest strategies to show roman gratitude and to prepare them to fight with romans against the gauls.
- Spend 40 talent to found the colonies of Bononia and Florentia.
- Order Legions I, III and IV to secure terriotory South of river Po.
- Order Legion II to Fort Latina.
