[NEXT GAME DG IV] Size and layout of the map? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

We continue the process of setting up the next Demogame. Currently, we have decided to play an Epic Game instead of a Conquest. We are now to decide how we want the world to look like.

The question is: "What map properties do you wish to see applied?"

The answers are many, and the poll is multi choice:
1. SIZE Tiny
2. SIZE Small
3. SIZE Standard
4. SIZE Large
5. SIZE Huge
6. SIZE Random
7. GEOGRAPHY Pangaea
8. GEOGRAPHY Continents
9. GEOGRAPHY Archipelago
10. WATER COVERAGE 80% water
11. WATER COVERAGE 70% water
12. WATER COVERAGE 60% water
13. GEOGRAPHY and WATER COVERAGE Random
14. CLIMATE Arid
15. CLIMATE Normal
16. CLIMATE Wet
17. TEMPERATURE Warm
18. TEMPERATURE Temperate
19. TEMPERATURE Cool
20. AGE 3 billion
21. AGE 4 billion
22. AGE 5 billion
23. CLIMATE and TEMPERATURE and AGE Random

Please vote only once per category (ie, one vote among the 6 SIZE options, one vote among the GEOGRAPHY options, etc.) If you wish to vote for a random option that encompasses several categories, please only vote once for the random option.

There will be many other polls that will follow. Here is the list:
1. Epic Game or Conquest Results: Epic Game
2. Map properties / choice of Conquest
3. Difficulty level
4. Choice of the played Civ
5. Use of mods or not
6. (if needed) What mod to use

This poll will be opened until Monday 10 May, 01:00 GMT

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I personally think Random geography and climate are no-brainers. It is easier to decide on this, and the game will be more fun, as there will be more surprises in it.

However, I have hesitated on the map size issue. Should we have a huge map like we always did, or should we go for smaller maps, that make games quicker, and easier to manage?
Since only 25 people seem interested in the new game, it seems reasonable to reduce micromanagement with a smaller map. It will also give less work to the president in late-game turns, where he has to push all these units and make all these humongous reports.
However, I can't bear too small maps. The game just goes too quickly on those, and we can hardly develop a feeling of involvement.

That's why I vote for a large map. It will still have an epic feel to it, without being to much a strain for those who dedicate themselves running the game. I think it is a good compromise between epic and practicability

If we play the Feudal version I think a large map with mostly land or a huge map with mostly water and LOTS of opponents.

Put an end to popups!

Small would give us a bit more to do than tiny, but nowhere near the mammoth work of a large or even a regular.

Random is ALWAYS great (climate + temperature + age). Long live the random!

I think a Pangaea map could be good to try - things get good quickly... To make up for the smaller size, only 60% water.

I considered including the option when making the poll, but I thought no map was available. Well, my bad

to people who want a man made map
Please say so in this thread. Also, to those who have voted, but wish a man-made map, now that the option has been brought to your attention, please just tell it in the thread, and say you change your vote. Thanks

Pangaea 60% seems to win the day, but other things are undecided yet. We don't know if we'll have a random or definite age / temperature / climate, and we don't know whether the map will be huge or big.

Besides, we haven't decided the difficulty level yet. Granted, I think we could vote on that right now, instead of waiting for this here poll to end. I'll open the difficulty poll now. Edit: done

RANDOM!!

Spiffor is right. Knowing the geography ahead of time really takes something away from the game. Make it a large or preferably huge map, and everything else random. But especially the geography - random.

We're playing a Feudal system, let's make sure the map has playable settings so we don't find out 30 turns into it that we CAN'T EVEN PLAY A FEUDAL concept like what happened to the Feudal Team in MZO's DemoGame.

Tired of ads?

Wouldn't it be better to nail down how many oppo first? That goes a long way toward deciding map size, doesn't it?

Have we already decided that?

Not yet. I thought the maximal # of enemies for the map size went without saying, but I must admit this perception was based on my habits...

Maybe the # of enemies should be asked in a "finishing touch" poll, asking things such as AI agreesivity, Barbarian level, etc

Keep in mind that one demogame has failed on a huge map, simply because of lack of computer power.

Make sure this does not happen again when we enter the modern ages.

Yes we are. But the risk is still there. If you have many opponents, and a slow computer, it might just not be feasible.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I assume we take 11 opponents on a large map, which is the max? So then I think it will be OK on most computers. (It should be at least )
I always play with the max opps on my maps, but probably not everyone does so we will need to see about that.

I'm thinking more like 23 opponents. What ACTUALLY slows down the computer is the sheer number of units, cities, and other things it has to keep track of. That's why the game slows down in the later game due to all the units the civs have accumulated.
