So? Heck, The Saudis would probably refuel us, if we'd really take out the nukes. We just have to be real hush hush about it.

Riiiight.....

The Saudi's are not worried enough about Iran's nukes to be stupid enough to do something like that. Plus, they probalby remmebre those weapon shipments to Iran Israel made, at a time they were lending tens of billions to Saddam.

They would get a much bigger kick teling the Iranians you were coming-then even if Israel then succeeded in taking out their targets, they get brownie points for muslim solidarity, and if Israel fails, well, a great victory against the Zionist enemy....

Yeah, because the Saudi royals really care about the struggle against the Zionist enemy.

muslim solidarity? The Iranians aren't even muslims by their standards. Saudis give a toss about Israel only in the context of the stablity of their regime. Iran is a much bigger threat to the stability of their regime, with the evergrowing Shia minority.

The biggest threat to them is the growing population period and the fact all their real leaders are 70 years old plus. Israel is a good diversion, as always. Besides, if word ever got out SA helped Israel, the Royal family would be in deep trouble. SA has been reaching out to Iran since the neocons got to town,a nd really, warning Iran ahead of time is a win win for SA- whatever the outcome, they win. That is the kind of situation you want to be in.

QUIETLY, U.S. PREPARES FOR ISRAEL STRIKE ON IRAN

quote:
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has been examining the prospect that Israel will attack Iranian nuclear facilities in an attempt to prevent the Islamic republic from completing an atomic bomb as early as this year.

U.S. analysts and government sources said the Bush administration has discussed the prospect of an Israeli air strike at several levels of government. They said the issue has been examined in terms of the diplomatic, military and security implications for the United States, particularly its military presence in Iraq and the Persian Gulf region.

The issue of Iran's nuclear weapons program was discussed by President George Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon during the latter's visit to the White House on April 14. The sources said the two men were alone during the brief discussion in an effort by the president to gauge a likely Israeli response to the completion of an Iranian nuclear bomb.

"It would be intolerable for the Middle East if they [Iran] get a nuclear weapon," Bush said after meeting Sharon.

They wouldn't do that.

When I stated that the only way for Israel to get at Iran is to fly over Turkey, or Iraq (under US occupation) or SA, Panag said Israel could always fly over the sea. Which means flying around SA-now, this is not realistic because SA would get more than enough time to detect an attack and warn Iran.

This is the point you came in at.

Yup, Israel has the Jericho 2 missile which probably has the range to hit most of Iran depending on the weight of its payload.
http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weap.../jericho-2.html

Israel also current has 3 state of the art German built Dolphin Class diesel subs which are believe to be equiped with modified Popeye Turbo cruise missiles that have a nuclear warhead and a range of 1,500 kilometers.
http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weap...in/Dolphin.html

These submarines are capable of heading close to the Iranian coast in the Persian Gulf and then launching their missiles. The plan is to always have one at sea in order to give Israel a second strike capability so Israel's enemies can't concievably escape nuclear attack by launching their own nuclear weaponry first and achieving complete surprise. Israel is also apparently interested in buying two more submarines to further enchance this capability.

A bit more, actually, it will depend on when we find them.

sadly the situation on the ground is no longer the same.

Not if we bomb their reactors. Also, deploying troops on the ground != invasion. We could still attack over land, just not actually topple their government (and then have to set up a new one).

Cause I assume you want them to be able to fly back, right?

Or go over the mediterranean, then fly over turkey yo get to the black sea, then either fly over turkey again to hit iran, or fly over Armenia and Aizerbaijan to get to Iran..ypu, another quicky....

In 1981, the Israeli jets - 8 F-16s and 6 F-15s - flew about 1,100 km (one way) to attack the the Iraqi nuclear reactor. At the time, the Israeli jets were not yet capable of aerial refueling, so they were really stretching their fuel capacity. The jets were actually refueled on the runway just before taking off, to compensate for fuel lost during start-up and taxi. Each F-16 carried a pair of 2000 lb bombs and three external fuel tanks, as well as a pair of air-to-air missiles to provide a rudimentary self defense capability. Still, with the heavy load and just barely enough fuel to complete their mission and return to base, the F-16s could not realistically defend themselves against an air threat, and this is why the F-15s came along.

The jets took off from Etzion Air Force Base in southern Israel just before 16:00 (4 pm) local time on Sunday June 7, 1981. The day and time of day was chosen to minimize casualties (no work in progress at the time of the attack) and to allow the jets to approach the target with the setting sun in their backs, then turn around and fly back into the sun after striking their targets, thus making it harder for the defenders to spot and target them.

The route they flew to the target took them into both Saudi and Jordanian air space, pretty much flying along the border between the two, but making "short cuts" into both nation's territory. On the way to the target, they flew low - about 150 ft or 30 meters above ground level - to avoid radar detection along the way. I once read an account where it was claimed that Jordan's King Hussein spotted the Israeli jets and placed an urgent call to the general in charge of air defense demanding to know what was going on, only to be told that they had no information of any Israeli jets. Unfortunately, I am unable to present a source for this information at this time, so it may or may not be true. What we do know is that the jets succeeded in making an undetected passage through the territories of Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq, arriving over the target at 17:35. The jets climbed steeply as they began their attack run, and quickly identified the reactor dome gleaming in the late afternoon sunlight. Only now did the defenders become aware of the incoming attack. Caught by surprise, they opened fire too late. With the F-15s circling overhead, the F-16 went in one by one and dropped their bombs on the reactor. All but one hit the target. Two minutes later, the reactor lay in ruins and the Israelis were heading home. On the return flight they climbed to an altitude of about 12 km because flying at high altitude is far more fuel-efficient than the low level maneuvering they'd done on the way in. The return flight was uneventful and all 14 jets returned safely. As they re-entered Israeli airspace, IAF Commander, Maj. Gen. David Ivry came on the radio and told them "All you have to do now is land."

In the days and weeks immediately after the attack, just about everybody and their brother seemed pi$$ed off about Israel's "aggression". Even the US voted in favor of a UN resolution condemning the attack.

10 years later, in 1991, the US had a slightly different perspective, and officially thanked the former IAF Commander David Ivry for the "outstanding job done on the Iraqi nuclear program" in 1981...

No more than an airstrike is an invasion. The objective would not be to take territory, but simply get in, blow some stuff up, and get out again.

While techincally true. Reactors allow creation of fissionable materials in more clandestine fashion. Were you to rely on centrifuge technology, you still need to aquire yellowcake which raises eyebrows.

Having Reagan as you avatar has greatly impared your thinking:

ANY TIME YOU PLACE YOUR TROOPS UNINVITED INTO SOMEONE ELSES SOVERIGN TERRITORY YOU HAVE INVADED THEM.

It does not matter what the purpose of that invasion is-that is not significant to the definition of the term.

Yes.

According to an Old Testament prophecy (Ezekiel 38), Iran will attack Israel in the future.

Also, Ethiopa and Libya will join them. (38:5)

And dare I say, possibly Russia, which will lead the invasion. (38:2)

Among others. (38:6)

This wicked scheme to destroy Israel once and for all will ultimately fail. (38:18-20)

When it fails, Gog's (possibly Russia) allies will turn against her and destroy her. (38:21-22)

So anyone who is worried that World War III will originate in the Middle East, just so you know, your fears are 100% accurate.
