I couldn't put it better than MarkG, nor worse than Legman. Selfrighteousness? Thanks Legman, for attacking us for this selfless effort.

AH, is that a union term? Nobody can give money without it is sanctioned by the government or some big deal union guy takes half?

Perhaps people are more interested in just attacking Alexanders Horse than they are in discussing the subject of sticky threads on the OT.

Let's forget personal attacks for the moment.

Until recently, I was one of them. When the thread is sticky, these people start to wonder what is so special about the thread. They look at it, and find that they are interested.
<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>
If we look at what's actually happened - the thread was sticky for a short while, then left to drift - this is probably the best way. While it's sticky, newbies (or people who's never cared:mad can see what the fuss is about and perhaps get involved. And by cutting it adrift after while, we can also appease those like Hydey ( ) and AH who don't like it sticky. We achieve the aim of making the thread sticky and AH is only annoyed for a little while .

Just to keep you happy Markos, here's my reply (can't ignore a mod!):

<center><table width=80%><tr><td><font color=000080 face="Verdana" size=2><font size="1">quote:
<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1>
</font>i'm an idiot so you'll have to explain it to me
1) AH says that people were forced to donate by a top-ed thread
-- perhaps then all those special "marathons" should be banned

2) Legman agrees, and says that making an appeal for charity on site like Apolyton creates "mixed feelings" to him
-- perhaps then we should put a box for money to the related person outside her current location, and then let people from around the world find it and donate...
perhaps we should not make public appeals to people's sensitivism over a certain level cause we remind them how they should act....

<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>
Well, AH is wrong about banning all these marathons, and of course I'm not saying that we simply "put a box somewhere", but what I was referring to was actually this:

<center><table width=80%><tr><td><font color=000080 face="Verdana" size=2><font size="1">quote:
<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1>
</font>
3) Legman then says that charity is a personal matter.
-- how is that connected with an thread on a internet site? one could easily message Lancer privately and not publicize his donation

so, please explain me how this is a valid point....

<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>
This is what I was talking about - people can pm Lancer and all that, but he's still going a bit over the top with all the thank you's and all that (even though he's not actually naming the donor) - for me, the only reason people donate should be to help someone, not to get attention or an ego boost (which can still happen if you're anon but people still thank you).
Of course, this is only my personal feelings, and if someone donates because they like the attention they get, well, I guess that's probably still all right...

The only reason I brought up this point, MarkG, was 'cause when I was first going through the archives on this issue, I found that Lancer would be thanking any donors a lot. But then there came a time where he'd all of a sudden keep referring to a mysteriously donor and repeatedly thanked him (whilst keeping the identity secret). But then recently did you notice the "Derek - you are the man" (or something like that) thread where Lancer did actually name who the donor was.

So the only [small] problem I have is not so much the thread is sticky (cause it can be unstuck), but rather with Lancer's overenthusiatic thanking.

That said, I'll still keep reading and supporting the thread!

<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>Yeah but that's personal... I think Lance is doing a great job, being enthusiastic and all... fits his style perfectly.
And for those who don't like it, they can always send him money anonymously... (for example, one person did send $130 directly to Sofronia's account, (s)he remains unnamed. Now that is a possibility as well.

But there are lots of people who come into the thread and mention they will donate money. They don't mind getting credit or else they would have donated anonymously, so because of this Lancer's style compliments the thread perfectly.

If they really wanted to stay anonymous, ppl could send a check to Lancer, requesting specifically he would NOT put their name on the list. And he'd do that, of course.

However, most ppl appreciate it when someone thanks them for their assistance in the project. That's only natural, and it doesn't matter either, I think ---whatever it takes to get the money together to build that house, THAT'S what's important!

UltraSonix, you came up w/ the idea that the Karen Mills thread should be sticky, and be a news item. After Narck contacted Mark, the thread was made sticky and there was a news item. This, and some bumps, has been your contibution. I thanked you for your good ideas, and for your bumps.

***Did you do these things because they were a right and good thing to do or because you wanted me to thank you?

I thank folks because they are doing a good thing in helping Karen. This is nothing but my nature, these folks that send money are not only helping Karen, but putting trust in me. I'm a bit honored by that, and a bit awed. For all these things I'm extremely grateful. When I'm grateful I give thanks. Please don't confuse this simple concept my friend, if I can't thank folks, I don't know what I'd do.

Regarding Derek, what he did was special, because he sent in $200 when I wasn't even thinking of raising money! He sent it because he thought it might help, but at the time all the giving that happened later...well who knew? So we discussed it and he asked me to keep it anon. So it was for a long time, and then he donated again for the house, but without any concern for the donation being anon. He freely came into the thread and said he would be sending a check. What had changed? Well it had become a charity and alot of folks were getting involved. He didn't care if folks knew he was donatimg, so I thought, rightfully btw, that it would be ok to finally thank Derek for this great gift. Literally this is the first thing that has gone right for Karen in her life. Someone cared! Sofronia and Karen 'burst into tears' as it was described to us. Someone had given something and asked nothing. I just wanted folks to know this about Derek, and he didn't mind at all. I knew he wouldn't you see, he's become a good friend. We've exchanged emails quite a few times, and I've gotten to know and respect him. Because of his generosity to Karen and his kindly manner towards Dolores, he's become my wifes favorite poster. God willing he'll be visiting us here in Oregon this December, and I have hopes he'll be my best man at our church wedding in the Phils if he can get away from work. Dolores and I are civil married, we're doing it right next Philippine trip.

Anyway, I was just saying thank you because I'm grateful, and I'm not going to stop being grateful, so I'm not going to stop giving thanks.

Goodmorning Narck, we must have posted at the same time.

Hey, I think most folks like to give their good name to help Karen, as well as their money. They like to say, I'm with you! Plus, that's one more person Karen can depend on. I really don't think folks are looking for my thanks.

Those folks are there for Karen.

Fair enough. I guess my suggestion of limiting further appeals to an announcement including information on where to send possible donations (as opposed to creating new threads each time a new appeal is made) doesn't go well with Lancer's need to thank people. Unless the thanks were expressed in some other way, like PMs or email.

But Narck thinks this suggestion would damage the cause of raising money. However, it was just a thought to ponder and I guess it's been pondered and dismissed, since Narck was the only one to respond directly to it.

Carry on.

Legman out

I meant that ppl will not mind you thanking them, in fact, I think that everyone who doesn't donate anonymously thinks of it as a positive thing. Naturally, the REASON for anyone to donate is Karen, not your thank you message But I'm just saying that I believe ppl see your posts as being positive, not negative And for those few who wish to donate anonymously, well, that's also quite possible.

I think Horse was just mad that his Israel thread wasn't reigning supreme over the OT...
