okay, just for the hell of it, I think I'll try a 320 X 320 map.

Can I do it in game, or do I need to modify the ini file?

I am running an Athalong 2600 + I believe with 512 megs of ram. I wonder how it will go.

but I figure I should try this at least once.

My new PC can run a 362x362 world map just as well as a tiny map. Only problem is the sheer size of it.

It makes games take a LOT longer, even if there is no slowdown.

If it makes you feel any better, here are my specs.

Athlon 64 3200+ @ 1066mhz FSB

1024mb of DDR-400 RAM

Radeon 9800 Pro

80gb Western Digital @ 7200rpm

Win XP Home Edition (I have no need for Pro because, well, it's really not any different)

Not alot of people have WinRAR, true. It's freely DL'able, however, and easily findable on google. It's well worth getting for the next timed you run into something rar'd.

How does it compare to Winzip or other similar programs?

how does it compare?

well it's just as easy to use. They are both pretty much instantaneous, so there isn't much difference .

I forget which site it was, but all their files were .rar files, so I just downloaded. I have both that and winzip. I guess I don't need both, but I like having both.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I have WinXP, so I find Winzip a bit easier to use.

WinRAR is, in my experience, marginally more efficient at compressing things. Speed is about comparable, but you need to compress something big for either to take an appreciable amount of time.

In practice I find them equivalent. It's good to have both, because you're gonna run into both.

Actually, When you're making compressed files, WinRar has better compression, by about 2-4% (Select Max compression with a 4096 Kb dictionary). That's not much to some people, but in quantity it always helps. Don't you cross the street to save 6 cents a gallon on gas?

On the not needing both, that is very true. WinRar can open and create *.zip and *.rar. I'm very happy with WinRar.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Of course you can always use WinZip to open .rar files as well if you're used to that interface, all you need is the .exe that can "unrar" .rar files. Unless I'm talking out of my a*** - haven't got either on this computer.

Some of the patches have sped up games with more civs in them - there was a noticeable speed-up when we patched to PtW 1.26f in the SPDG (Huge map, 24 civs). However, in that game it was certainly shown that the large number of civs was the real slowdown factor. Larger maps shouldn't be too bad for most of the game on a decent CPU (2G and +) - it's the combination of large map and many civs that is the killer, with the emphasis on the higher number of civs.

ok, it's my understanding that most loading is because of constant recalculating of trade routes (at least it takes forever to destroy a harbor).

what if they had the option to always be able to trade with everyone? i know that wouldn't be quite as realistic, but 15 min. load times are ridiculous (especially since you can't just leave, because 2 min. into it some civ wants to trade maps).

I've got 512MB RAM, which, I'm told, is about the max the game can handle anyway. Can't recall what type of RAM, but shouldn't matter much, I believe.

well, now I am playing on a 200 x 200 map, only 5 civs left (including me), the waiting time between the turns are ok, around 2 to 3 minutes. but each turn still takes me 20 - 30 minutes! you know, I have to order every of my units to combat, plus managing the cities and workers. it just takes too long.

No need for all that... what sort of amount of the world's land is covered by cities/culture radii? That should give a decent estimate of the amount of calculation that is needed each turn.

I find it interesting to note the different opinions on what people consider acceptable turn times.

I personally would consider a 10 minute turn time a problem. Yes, I have experienced longer and many others have.

But, perhaps everyone should tell people what they consider acceptable before posting that they have no real problems with large maps. Just so that we can all have a frame of reference.
