what's different of a winning elite unit? Suffering from ads?

in the combats, if an elite unit wins, it has chance to create an army leader, and for itself, CivIII gives me a popup screen to give the unit a name. I normally leave whatever the default the name is and forget about this unit.

my question is, beside giving us an army leader, this bearing-a-new-name unit has any different ability to the normal unit? can it heal the other units around it or increase offensive or deffensive power of the other units or itself?

Come on now, there a very special moment here, put your name in the dialog box!! Now, doesn't that feel better?

Now of course this has got to be a magickal unit now and if you lose it just hit the 'revolution' button to simulate the tradegy of your untimely death.

No, it is not different from others of it is type, except it can no longer create another leader.

I rename the unit to denote the number of leader this was in the game for me. (acher1)

You do know that the leader can be used to rush small wonders or create an army, right?

Once the unit gets upgraded, it will be a vet and can get another promotion and be eligible to generate a leader again.

So the same unit can produce more than one leader if upgraded? Has anyone had a single unit produce 2+ leaders?

Thanks guys for clarifying this.

Actually I think to name an army could be a better idea to just name a winning unit. For example, how does this sound: Tank Division No.7

Note that the name of an Elite* unit will stick around even if it's upgraded. If you leave the old name, you can get funny results like a Cavalry unit called "Knight"

Suffering from ads?

Yeh, I nearly reported my renamed elite "Horseman" as a bug when I upgraded him to a Knight and later found him running around under the old name.....until I plugged my brain in.

Tired of ads?

I used a scheme like Horsemen3, then Horse3_Knight7, then Horse3_Knight7_Calv11, but shorten it to H3_K7_Calv11.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Just last game I had a unit produce a 2nd leader after it was upgraded. I used to number my leader-producers, but now I just add "Guards" to their name and number the armies (e.g., 1st Army).

If you don't want to change the name, click "x" on the dialogue box. That should nullify the change, where clicking "o" will actually rename, for instance, your Knight unit as Knight, thus causing it to still be Knight when it's been upgraded.

both on the plain or grass land, if I attack the infantry I will normally win, but if I am attacked by the infantry, 50% of chance (or even more) my tank will lose.

That is how it should be, jamesyao. Regardless of the game numbers, tanks without infantry support usually end up being burned-out hulks (in real life).

That is because the Infantry have an attack of twelve while the tanks have only a defence of ten.

Long story short: last night I created a leader at the northern most tip of my continent, owned by the Arabs, whom I am in a near phony war with so their cities are all intact. The creating unit was killed next turn, but I moved the leader out of harm’s way. This is where I paused the game.

So tonight I now am going to try to use the extra move of the leader to work it through a large Arabian territory to safety. The game is modded to not allow cities on tundra, so there is a bit of space. And I going to send an escort to meet it.

Even so, I do not have high hopes. But it is the first time I've been in this situation, so who knows?

More on topic: I now give leader creating units overblown names like “Victory Remains Ours”, “Foe Vanquisher” and such nonsense.

Actually, Infantry has an attack of six, and Tanks a defense of eight, so Tanks should win most of the time if attacked by Inf, regardless of terrain.

Oh, and I tend to name Elite*s after the leader they spawned: Trajan's Legion (or Legio Traiana if I'm feeling particularly latinate), Lee's Cavalry, Agum's Mechanized, etc.

In C3C Infantry is att 6 def 10 and tank is 16 att and 8 def.

Inf attacks tank and wins 30.1% with no bonus for any.
Tank attacks infantry and wins 60.5% with no bonus.

So it is not a winning proposition for the infantry either way. give me 50 tanks and you 50 infantry and I will take my chances.

I just use 1st, 2nd, etc and usually drop them into the newly created army but I must admit that Legio Traiana does have a nice ring to it.

It happens, just not very often. There is a calculable probability. Leader generation is an entirely independent randomly-generated event. There is nothing that says if the spear wins it has to generate a leader. Anyway the spear would have to be elite first (whether it becomes elite is also random-finite probability) - you can't become elite and generate a leader as a result of the same combat.

I know it can happen (I forget the odds but they are very low). My never happens comment was a little sideswipe at some debates i've had on these forums

I believe the Spear (elite) has exactly the same chance as any other unit of generating a leader.
