I would think it doesn't matter what you call the religion just the type, so you could have state religion which would imply graeter control over the popualtion but would have adverse effects on other factors such as science, or if you had freedom of religion it could affect a countries attitudes to other countries with a state religion.

Now that I have typed this for that point you would need to have the religions named for them to affect relations with other countries.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Well, I was the guy who started the original Religion thread with Civ3 List (and now religions going to be in Civ4! Yay me! I'VE CHANGED WORLD HISTORY! Or possibly not), I got to say - independent religions. Independent religions. None o' this "religion as a social engineering choice" thing - religions that are independent from human control are the way to go. And I believe that independent religions is the way it's going to be, considering religion's been specifically mentioned as a new thing. (If it was just a SE choice it wouldn't have been.)

Frankly, I don't see what the big problem is. I think that by and large we worked out a pretty good religious model in Civ3 list. At least IMHO it's not too complicated. Religions are born, they spread out, they convert people. If you are nice to a religion it will give a happiness benefit to people of that religion, if you are nasty then people of that religion will be sad. And people have the option of treating different religions different, favoring one and persecuting another That's the meat of it, as far as I'm concerned. I honestly believe it would add a whole new interesting element to the game and wouldn't be so complicated as to make the game weird or boring.

And I'm favoring real-world religions as well. No, it won't cause trouble. Europa Universalis had real-world religions. OH NOES! GASP AND SHUDDER! And the real-world religions even had positive and negative effects on nations that chose them! SURELY PARADOX ENTERTAINMENT HAS BEEN BURNED TO THE GROUND BY RAVAGING FUNDAMENTALISTS! Well, no, it hasn't, and so won't Firaxis. I don't favor positive and negative effects, though, but the game would lose much of it's flavor if it had real nationalities but made-up religions.
