How to know how many cities I have Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

Hi, this is my first post here and I have had a question for the longest time, and that is, How can I know how many cities I have without counting them manually in the scrolling city production advisor screen? The reason is because I sometimes base how many units I build according to the number of cities that I have or things like that. And it gets tedious counting them many times a game when the number of cities gets high. I'm sick of counting! Can anyone show me a way to know this number easily? Thank you in advance!

How's this for a NON-answer?
On the F1, I scroll down 1 city then click in the lower scroll bar which moves 2 cities down (10, 12, 14, ...).

I don't think there IS a better answer, as unsatisfactory as it is.
You could, of course, stop basing your number of units built on your number of cities; I don't think there is a pill for counting-sickness.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

you could get the number from the free support number, provided all of your cities are in the same size group, and you aren't in demo/republic.

Noo way I know of and they could have use a number for the F1 screen so you would have the count.

The first screen has 9 and each click goes two (normally), but I pay attention to that name of the city as it sometimes move only one.

Build as many armies as you can, disband one, and disband one. Abandon cities till you lose the option of building more armies. Multiply your number of armies by four and add three. Presto; your city count.

Assuming like me, you put a temple in every city, and because the support cost of a temple is 1, would the total support cost of temples = number of cities?

The easiest method is to number the cities as you create them.

Thus London become 01London, NewCastle becomes 02NewCastle, etc.

Put a 0 before cities 1..9 so in F1 screen they are listed by order created.
You have to remember to add the number to cities you conquer.

I use the diplomacy screen. Call up an AI, and then count the clicks as you offer all your cities to them. Add one for your Capitol. (just don't accept the deal!)

I may have to adopt that idea. For huge Sid games, you may need three digits. Depending on how you plan on winning.

I find it easiest to call up the “go to” command for units. It is arranged in nice rows and you can see all your continental cites at once. After that it is a simple math exercise of counting the number in one row, then multiplying by rows and adding the remainder from the partial row. You will have to add island cities and cross-ocean holdings (or repeat the process overseas if you have a ton of cities there), but it is still easier than scrolling the F-1 screen.

Whats wrong with just going to the culture screen and counting the cities. unless that is the F1 key. I never use the hotkeys so I am not sure which one that is.

Nothing for the first 20 or so, but if you have 40, 60 or more it is very tedious.

Also you the scroll does not always scroll by two, so you have to pay attention to the cit names to be sure.

My problem is, I never care how many cities I have until I’m so far in the game I look at my large map and say, “Man, that’s a huge number of cites, I wonder how many I have?” That makes any counting in the either of the advisor's screens tedious at best.

In some games (mostly deity and sid) I need to know how many I have to see how close I am to being able to make another army.

I know I can't build one, but I need to know if one more city will do it or do I need 4 more?

I also have has times when I am thinking of switch govs, but I want to know how many cities I have and what size to determine the support cost.

If I am playing emp or demi, then I don't need that nformation.

You will have some supporters on the board, but really the public did not see it that way. Neither did I and had both CTP1 and II.

Your correct, the actual population can be found in the empire manager.

Thank you all again for giving me some ideas and also verifying that there is no stat on this in the game itself. I guess I will begin using the numbers in the name of the city as Planetfall mentioned. That sounds like the best idea to me especially if I want to build or capture many cities or god forbid 512?

Unless it takes away from the intended game play, I wish that all civs in the game could be put on a scoreboard listing the amount of cities that everyone has, but I would settle for just my own city count somewhere, but oh well. Here comes 01Babylon.

Might be interesting to know if you need one or three extra cities to get another army.

Enlighten someone who does not use many armies - if I lose cities till I'm below the limit, does an army get disbanded?

I am not sure, but I would think not. You will just not be able to create another until you relace them and have 4 extra.

Alex if you have the MA, the army will show up in the list as a potential build, if you have enough cities. If you do not have enough, it will not be listed.

The MGL will not have the build army option. So it is no problem to know that you do not have enough cities to support another army. The trick is how many more do I need?

This is not an issue in most games. It comes up often when you have an MGL. If you cannot make another army and you need one city, you may elect to wait. If you need 3 or 4, you may decide to use the leader for a structure.

It is only in games on huge maps at Sid that I am very concerned to get another army. They are very important to contain the massive numbers the AI will field.

Also in those games, I wil have lots of elites in battles and can afford to burn MGL's on structures if I do not have enough cities.
It is usually not wise to hold the leader in this scenario as you could likely generate another very soon.

well explained, vmxa... i think i had a sudden brain damage when i opened this thread and didn't notice that the trick is to know how many cities *till* one can get another army, and not just to know *if* one can build an army or not...
