The very last time this happened, the Liberals under Mackenzie King clung to power by seeking a coalition with the progressive party. Same with Turner. Turner got toasted by the Conservatives under Mulroney for this precise issue.

I fear we will see the same here. All the Liberal supporters in Quebec will be betrayed when the Liberals join with the BQ to 'make sure Harper doesn't get in.'

Martin will never step down even if his party have fewer seats than the conservatives. He will fight tooth and nail to cling to power. And he will usher in a Conservative majority by doing so.

Fools doubt that the liberals will win. As I said, the Liberals always win because they are the natural governing party. People out west may not like this, but it's reality.

The Reform/Conservative party is simply too bigoted for the majority of Canadians. They are never going to win anything in Quebec, and without that they are going to be in opposition, permanently.

Good on Duceppe, the Bloc is the big winner tonight.

He's dead, Ben. He's had every conceivable advantage in this campaign:

1) The voters are tired of the Liberals as it's been ten years - that's natural.

2) The Liberals have been mired in scandal.

3) They ran a terrible campaign.

But the Liberals will still be the government because they are most in line with voters in Ontario. Most right wing Canadians are like Asher: they are economically conservative, but aren't bigots. There is no way they will vote for a socially conservative party. Kudos to Canada for that.

If the Tories can't win with this advantage, they will never win. Unless, of course, they completely drop the religious right and abandon US style politics. That means revitalising the PC party which Canadians trusted on social issues – "Progressive Conservative" sounded like an oxymoron, but it is the only viable form of conservatism in Canada.

Not weird at all. I saw that the NDP had nearly doubled its vote share in Ontario.

Some of this is down to Layton's stance over the war. I talked to a lot of people at the protests who said they were changing from Liberal to NDP because of the party's principle stand.
