It's called Leet speak. Using characters that look sort of like the intended letters, and using common mistakes as intentional substitutes. Hence l33+ for Leet, and 0wn3d or pwn3d for owned (=defeated/dominated).

Well as far as I can tell.

Owned came from "I own your ass" or "your ass got owned". Which sort of means "you don't have control of the situation anymore".

Generally I've observed it to be used in situations where one person is saying he's better off than you are due to you falling flat on your face, either from other causes or because of that person doing certain things.
