	Battle for Wesnoth Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

There is plenty of free (libre) software around that's pretty decent. If you know it exist and know where to find it. Here's one I found recently and have been enjoying immensely. It's still under development but very playable (ver 0.7.9).

Battle for Wesnoth

It's hex-based fantasy/strategy game for SP and multiplay with a simple combat system comparable to AdvanceWars. You can recruit units like fighters, archers, cavalry, healers, mages etc...from various races and slog out in quick battles. You gain gold to buy units and pay their upkeep from conquering and occupying cities. If a unit survices long enough he may even gain a new level (max 3) and become stronger. In the next scenario you can recall those units, but at a price. They are essential for your longturn survival for some of the scenarios later in the game.

I was cruising at the first few levels at normal but just wait till you come to the crossroads scenario


Not all the graphics are brilliant. The terrain could be better but the units are drawn very well. The interface has been kept simple. Getting the hang of this game is easy with some in-game tutorials.

Final judgement: Old skool hex-strategy game that has the "one-more-turn" feeling

Now, who wants a MP match?

A nice touch is that you can also be an observer in MP matches. Try and learn.

No, it's pretty ugly. More like HoMM3 or 4.


The unit sprite are great, though. Reminds me of the SNES... infact, this game seems very reminiscent of Ogre Battle, although obviously quite different.



I like it, and am willing to try it multiplayer. How many can play in a game? A three player game would fun. (maybe even 5... although that might be too much to organize)

It's about 22mb


And I showed some perogative and checked how many people can play myself... nine is the limit. I seriously doubt we can organize it well enough for that many to be practical, however.

It also has a nice map generator.

but the terrain looks Heroes I-ish/Warlord ish... very primitive.

Heroes III was the best quality design in all aspects of all the heroes games.

Unlimited turns is a bit too much. 50 turns should do for now.

The battle ground will be the Isle of Anduin, a 2 player map. It isn't a large map. So we should clash pretty soon.
