I gathered that...or at least I gathered that the govt is providing the funds that allow the shelters to keep the animals alive for the 6 days. But anyway...what difference does it make whether they are private shelters or not? The point is that government money is being wasted.

Oh wait, you're probably one of those people that believes any opinion other than your own is invalid.
quote: yes... people have a "right to life" but no other living thing does... and you think I'm a monster? |
I'm a monster because I believe human life is worth more than the life of a dog?
quote: Look at this from the POV of some higher being... humans are a destructive organism that is consuming the natural resources of this planet and polluting the environment probably to the point where life itself may not be possible on Earth any more. Humans are responsible for mass extinctions of life, not to mention the carnage humans bring upon themselves. |
Oh no!!!111 Humans consume natural resources, just like every other living organism on this planet! We are monsters!
quote: And then we have dogs and cats. What have they ever done? Too many of them have been born because HUMANS breed too many of them. But yet we're punishing them because of OUR mistakes. |
Boohoo. I don't support the irresponsible pet owners who take no steps to prevent their animal from reproducing, but I'm not going to shed too many tears because Arnold is taking 3 days off the life of animals slated for possible termination.
quote: Yes... the world is overpopulated.... WITH HUMANS. Look at the natural population levels of humans before so-called "civilization"... maybe around 200 million (pre 4000BC levels). |
Again, why don't you terminate your own life? Or is it just easier to advocate the death of others, the abortion of fetuses? I mean, by your own admission, you are a parasite. Or is your parasitic life worth more than others, simply because they drive a car you don't like? Surely you consume unnecessary resources just by posting on Apolyton? But, since it's so much easier to judge others..
quote: I'm only half-joking about this stuff. Would I advocate mass-murder? Probably not. But do humans deserve to live any more than any other form of life? Certainly not. And if there's any sort of karma for humanity, a huge asteroid is going to obliterate us so that nature can once again start from relative scratch. |
Every species is competing for their own survival. What do you think an asteroid will do? Destroy life? Yes. But do you seriously think some other species won't dominate? It is part of nature.

I don't like the idea of killing animals any more than anyone else, but we have to face up to the hard reality that some animals will not be adopted. This isn't really about killing less animals, it's about deciding whether keeping animals that will be put down anyway alive for an extra few days on the taxpayer's dime makes sense or not.

But, since it's so much easier to judge others.. | I include myself in "humanity". WHich is why I said I want an asteroid to kill us all (that includes me). And considering the depression I'm going through without much progress, you might get your wish. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that I probably will kill myself. So you can grab popcorn and champagne the day that probably happens. At least do me the justice of using something good to celebrate with. Not Cristal, but at least $25 bucks a bottle.
I guess I'm just frustrated because I'm obviously a higher form of human intelligence than probably 99.999% of humanity. So naturally it's hard to discuss ideas with someone when they are beyond one's comprehension. Most are incapable of thinking as anything but a human being. It's not an insult or anything... just a fact of existence. Some people are capable of higher thought... most are.
It's not that I'm incapable of compassion or incapable of cherishing life... it's that I choose to cherish non-belligerent forms of life. I don't chastise humanity for eating meat, for instance... I eat meat myself. That's part of the natural food cycle. And it's not that humans just consume resources... it's that humanity is consuming at a rate far higher than it should naturally. This happens in nature... when predators consumer too much of their food supply, and thus cause their own demise. This will happen to humanity (or else, enough of humanity where a large population will starve as in Africa). The disturbing reality that Western Civilization feels no responsibility to help starving peoples is a testament to humanity's selfish and brutal nature. America is really the only nation capable of solving much of the world's problems, but we choose not to. We muster our industrial capacity to fight wars, but never to help others. That in itself is a testament to the nature of American culture.
I'm somewhat depressed because I have a level of self-hatred that is the result of my conclusinos. I'm an American (and also a human) and I'm part of the problem, although I'd like to be part of the solution, but I doubt little old me could get America to become a great humanitarian. This is also the cause of my disgust towards waste and over-consumption. I try to consume as little as possible, not taking more than I need. But my choices are limited by the systems society uses. Efficiency and decreased consumption aren't choices because of capitalism. Too much money is made off of consumption. Thus, innovation towards efficiency is stifled to maintain the status quo and greed-driven level of profit.
The simple fact that evil and immoral practices dominate society is further proof that humans are evil. That's not to judge the level of morality of an individual human such as you or I... but one's political support is also an indicator. Any support of groups that support immoral practices is immoral. It's kind of like Bush's policy on terrorism. You are either with us (good) or against us. You said you support the war in Iraq in another thread. That's an evil and immoral act. Somehow you justify that by some warped line of reasoning because you don't seem terribly conflicted with your support. (I don't mean to jump to false conclusions, so forgive me if I'm wrong).
Oh well, I've gone off on a long tangent. I guess this particular issue struck a nerve with me as it is only part of a larger issue in my eyes. Instead of finding a humane way to solve the problem of overpopulated animals, Arnold has chosen to just cut the program and save money (which is pittance in the grand scheme of California's budget crisis). It may be a minor issue, but it is certainly reflective of the man's character. He's evil. Plain and simple. But that's to be expected from a Republican (all present company included). Yes, other solutions may cost more money, but life often involves making sacrifices. It's apparant from his cancelation of the car tax that he can't ask rich people to "sacrifice" in order to increase revenue; so he chooses to sacrifice those who can't stand up for themselves.... the weak. Not only is Arnold evil for making that choice, he's a ****ing chickenshit. Dogs and cats have no voice. He's too much of a ****ing ***** to stand up to rich California residents, so he chooses to enact a policy that will kill thousands and thousands of animals rather than to ask Californians to burden what... a few dollars per person to support another solution? Californians will probably waste more money on gambling losses than it would take to help out those animals.
But I guess I'm a crackpot because I pity innocent animals. Silly me.
BTW, animals have more sentience and awareness than a ****ing fetus... yes... a little baby is an innocent... but not some mass of cells incapable of thought. That pretty much covers your abortion strawman that I detected in one of your posts.

It's easy to whine about how awful everything is and how you're too powerless to do anything about it.
All that's gonna do is, you got it, make you depressed.
First off, it's not really true: you can probably do a lot more than you think, IF YOU ARE WILLING TO DEVOTE TIME AND EFFORT TO IT.
If you are not willing to devote that time and effort, like the vasty majority of us are not (who for the most part prioritize other things like making a living/providing for a family/etc), then I suggest you come to terms with the fact that the world, including the part of it you're in, is imperfect, and just get on with living. Do what you can within the constraints of your "gives a ****" (as DinoDoc is want to say), and move on.
I say this not to insult you, but rather to try and help you. Seriously.

Sava as long as you're looking at the big picture why not take a step even further back and look at the *REALLY BIG* picture. If humanity goes extinct all other life on earth will likewise go extinct in a few hundred million years anyway due to the mortality of our sun. Humanity is still incredibly young ignorant and weak. You don't have to assume it will always remain that way as a species.
Maybe it would be healthier for you to hope things improve rather than hoping some cosmic catastrophie exterminates yourself and all other people on earth. Humans like all other creatures are strongly motivated to act selfishly but when circumstances allow they are capable of demonstrating compassionate behavior on a large scale. Maybe in a few thousand years civilization will have converted earth into a huge nature reserve and will occupy areas off planet that are currently lifeless.
