Vote HERE to bring back Wonder movies!! Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I'm a big fan of the Wonder movies from both Civ2 (favorite: Leonardo's Workshop) and Alpha Centauri (favorite: The Self-Aware Colony). Although they add nothing to gameplay, they do make the game more attractive and memorable. IMO this was the one big omission from Civ3.

I voted No, but I am confident that if they keep the wonders concept there will be movies to accompany it.

Either way is fine. They're cool, but I usually skip through most (except favorites) once I've seen them enough times.

I'd say yes to some quick little movie. Or if it's possible with the engine, have some ingame zoom in some city view so there is a nice little flyby or something of the wonder. There should be at elast something that sets them apart.

It would be good, unless it was going to significantly negatively impact on other game features due to time or whatnot.... and how hard must it be to do such a cool little thing, when every developer and their dog is doing it?

I wouldn't mind having the wonder movies back, so long as they are simple and don't take up too much of the resources of the game's development. The movies add to the atmosphere of the game, sure; but I'd be willing to get rid of the movies if that would lead to better gameplay and more playtesting.

How about an option (in the editor) that would allow for both PCX splashscreens and wonder movies? Moddability is important.

Yes to wonder movies. They do add so much atmosphere to the games, as well as presenting a unique opportunity for some *great* screenshots for the back of the box when the game goes on sale.

If it means less resources go towards making 3d leader heads, well then, alas.

Considering the people who make the wonder movies aren't the people who will be involved in working on the gameplay aspect, I really don't care about the time spent.

Apocalypse, civ4 will have a budget.
The wonder-movie-makers will cost money and decrease the budget for the programmers.
Thus: more wonder movies will mean less features in the game.

Wonder movies as in civ2 must be very expensive.

Slideshow-type movies are much cheaper to produce and still very effective, as shown by games such as Thief. Not that every wonder movie should be slideshows.

It is a false assumption that money saved on wonder movies would be spent on programming. The game needs eye candy if it is going to sell. The game needs eye candy if the publishers are going to pay for continued development of the game.

We may as well request that the eyecandy in question actually adds something to the game, unlike other resource-intensive undertakings that did not add much. *cough*leaderheads*cough*

Leaderheads at least are things you keep on seeing.
Wondermovies are turned off after 3 times anyway.

I have no problems with eye-candy.
Bring on the eye-candy. But not on stuff we don't care about anyway.

As with the palace, it's useless in it's current form.
But a palace would be cool if you would meet visitors in it, so you can impress them.

You choose to turn off wonder movies, just like I also chose to turn off the diplomacy screen in Civ2 (don't know if that's possible in Civ3).

I certainly like the wonder movies better than the diplomacy screen. I even occasionally look at them just because they're so pretty , I think I turned off the "animated heralds" almost immediately, and I haven't seen them since.

(oh, and I'm talking civ2 here, thanks to a blissfull lack of civ3)

The fact that people still turn up, even now, on these forums asking what music was used in the civ2 wonder movies should be enough evidence that they really are looked at.

Suffering from ads?

Wonder movies, using real video footage as opposed to CGI, can't be that expensive can they? I mean, I could use decent video capture on a PC I had 5 years ago. An editor to add a bit of music and text and I was away with some decent work! Advances in technology since then must make it still relatively cheap and quick to make.

The only real cost I can see is rights to use footage for commercial purposes..

I definitely prefer wonder movies over unit animations and animated rulers. But more important than the movies to me are things like the editor, scenarios, and civilizations. It does sound like time/ money/ effort spent on wonder movies could harm more important things. If the movies are in, I want live action, no CG. If it's a choice between wonder movies and other eye candy, please go with the movies. Make sure to pop up a link to the civilopedia when the movie ends and also if the player skips the movie, not like Civ2. I will watch wonder movies far more than three times.

The diplomacy screen is automaticly turned off in civ3, since it can't be turned on.
The civ3 diplo screen is like the civ2 diplo screen while the diplo screen is turned off

The poll is not the best poll I have ever seen.
The question: "Do you want more for the same price" will by most people be answered by 'yes' at first sight.

You should have made a poll:
- do you want wonder movies, so there are less resources for the other aspects of the game?
- do you not want wonder movies but do you want Firaxis to spend their resources on more important aspects of the game.

I'm sure there would be a hell of a difference in the outcome.

Making polls is a profession
