January through June 1954

The Cold War

The allies send troops to Greece, where defensive tactics and Turkish pressure on supply lines have prevented Greece from falling, but there is still a significant Soviet presence in the north.

British ships from Mediterranean to North Atlantic, where fighting continues. Soviets surface ships in the Atlantic are now almost exclusively confined to this theatre, but subs are still able to traverse and wreak havoc in farther waters. The U.S. Navy also operates here, with Aircraft carriers providing an effective weapon against the Soviet Surface Fleet, but 2 Aircraft carriers have been lost, and 2 more had to be docked for repairs.

In the skies above Europe both Britain and the U.S. have put up prototypes of new types of planes, variations of close support aircraft. These models are built to operate at low altitudes, withstanding a lot of damage and still be able to deliver their payload. This plane has already acquired a fearsome reputation among Soviet, German, and Warsaw ground forces, and among them has earned the nickname “The Terror”. This plane’s low speed, average maneuverability, mediocre climb rate, and ground-attack armaments make it vulnerable to interceptors, and it is best used in conjunction with interceptor escorts. Not many “Terrors” are flying, because of course the production run has just started and it is still sort of in the prototype stage, but also because while this airship has an admirable success rate in destroying ground targets, the amount of damage it can soak up is not infinite and it can usually deliver its munitions but climbing up from the battlefield away from enemy guns is another story. The low return rate has made British and American pilots fear “The Terror” just as much as Warsaw soldiers.

Allied High altitude bombers continue their attacks on Soviet facilities and supply lines, but the return to the air of the Soviet air force has made this endeavor much more risky, and losses are once again mounting.

The Americans and British are supplying their troops with gear to offer some protection against nuclear and chemical weapons. It is bulky and inconvenient, so usually not used during combat, but if troops are only in the general area of a chemical or nuclear attack not the direct target, the gear can cut down on casualties

Americans are attacking with poison and debilitating gas.

The Americans and Canadians have opened up a new front by attacking Eastern Siberia, simply bypassing the Soviet holdouts in the Aleutians, who with dwindling supplies, can not without reinforcements and tactical support present a further threat to Alaska. The invasion has proved slow and tedious. Supply lines are insecure and supplies are often unavailable, and the Canadian and American forces have used up a lot of resources simply getting through to the wilderness to some minor city where the Soviets hold them off in their approach for weeks and weeks. The Soviets have not made anything easier for the Americans by nuking a site in Alaska (not a city, a military port for routing supplies and reinforcements).

Soviet Sakhalin Island has also been attacked, with the American, Australian, and Japanese marines taking fairly heavy casualties upon their landing and advance, and the nearby port city of Korsakov has not yet been taken, there is heavy fighting within the residential and industrial districts, where American + co. troops have not yet been able to dislodge defenders.

The USA has landed nuclear bombs on 3 Chinese cities, and has used conventional bombs on Chinese held sites in and near Korea. Despite this, China continues to advance down the Korean peninsula, and American, Israeli, and rebel Korean forces are unable to stop the superior Chinese numbers.

Gruesome fighting has led to near stalemate in northern Yugoslavia, while Soviets have advanced in Southern Yugoslavia.

The East Germans have taken over the remainder of Austria, but trained and organized partisans are becoming a problem.

East Germany and the Soviets have taken Hamburg, and advanced a little farther in northern Germany but are completely stalled in southern Germany.

In Europe, the Soviets have successfully nuked another Italian and another Dutch city and 3 battlefields in Yugoslavia.
In Asia they have nuked a Japanese port city in Hokkaido.

East Germany

More war production.

Finland

Finnish government founds international science center. Several neutral countries have sponsored projects in this research institute. Finland is also funding schools and institutes of higher learning, and the Finns can proudly say they have one of the best education systems in the world, which is part of the reason it is so good; everyone from children to adults is expected to work hard at learning, whether classics or technical skills, so most people strive very hard to achieve.

USA

Some radical communists and anarchists in America are stirring up trouble, staging small rallies and vehemently decrying American aggression and oppression in speech and literature. So far this has culminated in no more than several minor acts of vandalism and a few instances where rallies were broken up and the participants driven away by civilians. Even most socialists are distancing themselves from these radicals, and they are scorned or despised by almost the entire population.
The keels have been laid for several more aircraft carriers.
Relief work in Florida is finished, with populations from the affected areas resettled about as well as could be expected, and crucial infrastructure has been repaired.

USSR

Soviet factories produce airplanes as rapidly as they can. Most of the rebellions have been pretty effectively crushed, with extensive use of propaganda and reeducation, and where that didn’t work, Soviet police reluctantly used the bullet. With most of the seasoned troops fighting in Europe, internal security has largely been relegated to police forces and recently conscripted workers and farmboys, who, though no problems have cropped up yet with their loyalty, are less used to unquestioningly following orders than the veterans.

Egypt

Agricultural research. Egypt has a potent university system, which is attracting much of the elite from neighboring countries to study in Egypt. President Farouk’s UN proposal to condemn Israel for its treatment of the Palestinians has been vetoed by the U.S. Perhaps needlessly, because as aid and administrative help comes to Palestine from other countries, the Israelis have left the Palestinians on their own, and while both states are still unrecognized by most of their neighbors, Palestine is beginning to establish a de facto independent government. There is still considerable tension over Jerusalem and several other Jordan-region land areas, which remain divided.
Egyptian pilots are being better trained to handle the “new” (for the Egyptian airforce) airplane electronics that are being installed.
The abandoned and sunk Soviet ships are being salvaged by the Egyptians, as agreed to by the Soviet council in return for payments. Some wrecks simply aren’t worth recovering, others will be scrapped, and there are a few hulls that could plausibly by repaired and refitted. They have been dragged back to Egypt for appraisal.
The Dam’s construction is well under way; and already farming equipment factors have begun production in preparation for the increased demand upon completion of the dam.
Several municipal officials have been caught in corrupt behavior by police, but many Egyptians wonder how many more got away by simply bribing investigators. Several pundits have quipped that at least a multitude of corrupt officials created a semblance of order and competition, but now the bosses are getting stronger because the incompetent ones are getting weeded out. Of course this is regarded as silliness.

Mexico

The Mexican government has been reestablished. This government has declared its neutrality and is working on consolidating it control over local affairs and setting up new administrative structures.

Cuba

There seems to be some kind of (attempted) coup going on in Cuba. No victor has emerged yet, so the outside world, including the Cuban people, doesn’t yet know what is going on.

Yugoslavia

Invaded.

Britain

War production; planes, tanks, and arms.
British colonies are contributing supplies, war materials, and in some cases men in return for a promise of independence once the war is over.

Australia

Korea

Korea has ceased to exist as an independent state. China has taken over control, production, and administration in the north and the only authority in the south is the defending army.

Other News

India and Pakistan, concerned about the situation in Asia, have warily agreed to divide Kashmir and officially recognize mutual borders in the province. The decision has been made, but whether this can actually be successfully carried out remains yet to be seen. Plans for voluntary relocation have been drawn up, as both sides hope to avoid a repeat of the tremendous amount of violence that occurred during the initial partition of India and Pakistan.

Organized protests, particularly among the youth but stretching into other age groups and social classes, are taking place in Libya against the king.

Anti-government fringe rebels have begun making trouble actively in Colombia, Venezuela, Congo, and Angola. The degree of activity ranges from mostly peaceful demonstrations and strikes in Venezuela to murders, kidnappings, assassinations and large scale vandalism in Colombia and Angola to The Congo, where rebels have managed to raise and equip an army and have established a sphere of influence where the colonial government has been cut off from authority.

The world calls for a Cease-Fire Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Despite the bravery of your soldiers and the courage of your leadership, the opposing forces in this war are too evenly matched to produce a decisive victory. Continued fighting merely saps the strength and reduces the relevance any nation that continues to conduct its affairs this way. The nations that still remain outside the conflict should throw their support behind this pledge otherwise their involvement is only a matter of time.

If a peace treaty is too ambitious, let us agree to a cease-fire at least. Here are some thoughts on possible compromise:

1) Yugoslavia as a neutral communist state, barred from NATO but free from Warsaw.

2) Austria exists outside NATO and barred from Warsaw, new elections to be held.

3) West Berlin added to East Germany, but West Germany restored.

4) Korea is an issue for China and that is a separate war. I urge China to refrain from any response to the American attacks. I hope they can see how little they stand to gain. I hope that instead they can seek some compensation instead.

These resolutions may not be popular with your citizens, but you have faced nuclear attack without apprehension so I am sure that you will not falter in the face of their ire.

Just so you know Tired of ads?

Epilogue.

The Armistice was signed January 15, 1957.

It is now July 1, 1957.

It is estimated that over 200 million people, mostly civilians, have died as a result of World War III. War-caused destruction of crops, homes, sanitation and infrastructure is still killing thousands even today.
Some 1.5 million square miles of land were razed, stripped of vegetation or improvements, or otherwise devastated as a result of the fighting. 110 thousand square miles of previously occupied land remains submerged or completely uninhabited. 30 million survivors still have not returned to their homes.
90% of combatant countries, which together comprised the majority of every continent, suffered at least one chemical or nuclear attack on their own territory.
More equipment, industry, goods, and materiel was sunk or destroyed than had been produced in the entire previous history of mankind combined.

So that’s that.

(You may be interested to know that the general trends of war and conquest seen in this NES were predicted precisely by George Orwell in his book 1984. You have a bright future ahead of you.)

The premise was that the Soviets & co. couldn't lose the land war in Europe--They just outnumbered you so much. But then, neither could they stand up to the tactical and strategic bombing. The Soviet military was getting everything, so the Soviet border republics revolted, but the communist elite stayed in charge. The war ended in a stalemate.
Egypt got big because...who was going to stop them?
