It makes no difference. Fighters > Torps, so they're halved then doubled again. No change at all I don't think.

Nah, that is right.
Fighters vs lasers doubles the lasers, backing off halves the lasers. Hence, lasers = lasers.
Fighters = no change.

You would have accomplished nothing true, except that you may have been able to damage someone else's fleet. GT knew you had only torps and so could put fighters first, whereas perhaps other people had lasers first in thier OOB. You may have been able to take out a few of their ships in a last ditch attempt to swing the balance someone elses way. Who knows really...
