Really? I never knew that. Still, I'd rather start paying as soon as I can, stop them accruing pikey interest. Although it may be better to keep money that would be paid in a high-interest account as long as possible, yes...

I paid about £10 a week in utilites (excluding the internet connection I'd get). £30 for food is realistic if you don't include alcohol in that. And if you're gonna be paying £100 a a week for rent, you'd wanna get somewhere within walking distance of yer job fer that...

Got spare money?

Hey Mike! Food!

£30 food is easy. £4.50 a day. Let's see on a usual day..

Breakfast - 55p
100g oats (5p as a kg costs 50p ish)
1 pint milk (30p)
250ml cranberry juice (20p)

11:30am - 80p
bread (10p)
1/3 pack of cheap sliced meats (40p)
lettuce (10p)
bit of fruit (20p)

3:00pm - 80p
same as 11:30am (80p)

6:30pm - £1.50
chicken breast (£1.00)
brown rice (10p)
broccoli (40p)

10pm - 60p
cottage cheese

That comes to £4.25.

Travel? I plan to live as close to work as possible.

Utilities? tbh I haven't a clue.

That's a big chunk.

In Hong Kong, a person earning the equivalent of £15,000 pounds would take home £14,280 pounds after taxes.

It's pretty similar to what I eat now. I eat for nutrition, taste comes way down the list.

No car, no buses to shops not taxis back from nights out, no travelling to see friends, or to poly meets?

I easily spend £10 a week on travel and I bike to work. Going into town (I live on the outskirts) and taking the car to see friends, etc. all adds up.

More than £10 a week. Probably around £100 a month, for phone, gas, electric, water and internet.

You will be able to live, but you won't get £80 a week for messing about with. More likely around £30-50. Enough to go out a bit, but not the most comfortable existance. However Econ grads usually get salary rises quite quickly and highly, so you wouldn't have to live like that for more than a year or two, most likely.

You can eat really tasty food and very healthily. I mean your chicken breast, brown rice and broccoli isn't very different to what I had yesterday. Even if you just added a bit of onion, garlic, ginger or chilli or something...

Something that has some actual flavour!

Yes, and he's got you down as paying National Insurance on £15,000 - shouldn't it be £10,200, ie the taxable part of your income?

Also - your wages should go up after 3 months, and we're a quarter of the way through the tax year already, so I reckon 12,200 is a more likely figure.

Depending on how you much you have been earning since April.

You seem to be mistaken- PH said, "For national insurance, 11% of everything over £91.01 per week" in his figures and proceeded from there, and why would his wages go up after three months?

You're right about the earnings since April though- that should give us a bit of a break when we find work.

Yeah, that part of the tax year without earnings will give you a bit of a break indeed...but you will probably have to contact the Inland Revenue to make sure they calculate your tax bill accordingly...

Well if the guys in the place's HR department know what they're doing, as did the guys at the lab I did my placement year which started in August, then they'll sort it out for you correctly.

No. I pay NI but I don't pay any tax at all (I earn less than £4600 in a tax year).

While they seem high, PHs figures are correct. NI is evil.

The especially evil thing is that NI has a ceiling, above a certain amount of money you don't pay NI on it, making it an especially regressive form of taxation. I say it should be axed and rolled into income tax considering it just goes into the coffers like any other tax and certainly doesn't serve as any kind of 'insurance' whatsoever...
