And now my personal (Senator) thoughts.
What can we gain from this? We would see how much gold GWT has, which would be interesting in determining how much they could upgrade or rush at that point in time. We would also see what forces they have in the city, what they have built there and what their sliders are at.
To me, it is unnecessary to see what is in Ruhr. We would get a better estimate of how much damage killing Ruhr would do, but we are going to do that anyway, or fail trying, so this would not change anything, IMO. We could get a better estimate of what they are producing in their other cities, true, but this would change with the new corruption effects when Ruhr falls, and we may not have members with enough time to analyse to this level of detail right now anyway. If we see a few units, we will attack in force anyway, as there's no accounting for how many units they may have close enough to reinforce Ruhr. If we see many units, we will have no choice but to attack anyway. If we see too many units, we may gain something out of the knowledge, but we are supposedly committed at this stage, plus it is not so likely they have an inordinate force in Ruhr. After all, we are attacking on the presupposition that it is seen as in a safe place for GWT. You don't defend safe places at the expense of less-safe places.
Their slider info is of little use too. We will see what level they are at right now, but there is no information about the previous turn, or the turn after. It is a one-turn deal. If they have a low science rate, we could POSSIBLY just strengthen our belief that they have to divert a lot of funds for upkeep of their massive army. But possibly too just because they are about to discover a tech, or because they are saving cash, or researching at 40 techs per turn.... Anyway, once we have taken Ruhr, their science rate will likely HAVE to change anyway, due to the WW and the sudden increase in corruption. We gain no info we can use after the strike (or even during) from their slider settings.
Knowing their cash reserves will tell us what spending power they have, and whether they have been saving gold in a way knowing their slider settings on one turn could not. However, after the Ruhr strike this information will change too, also becoming useless. They will doubtless rush or upgrade something to counterattack or to protect against further incursions.
So, I don't think we gain any info from this investigation that we can use after the Ruhr strike because of the dramatic changes in GWT the strike will provoke. The only thing this could do is make the Ruhr strike look harder (something I personally do not believe will happen). Would we turn back anyway, at this point, with the level of planning, the many polls, the countless posts on numerous threads and the sheer effort and resources needed to get this far?
