AU 601: Single Player Version Inflate your Upload Space

Apolyton University is a school of strategy, where students sharpen their Civ3 skills and share their experiences in a series of thematic games. When playing an Apolyton University game, gaining and sharing knowledge is more important than getting a high score, or even winning the game. Participants are encouraged to share their strategy after the game, and even to try several attempts.

There have been more than two dozen AU games to date, and the latest AU game is the first foray into multi-player Civ (see AU History 101 for an overview and links to all AU materials). AU 601 is a struggle between two human players playing as ancient Rome and ancient Greece in a play-by-email (PBEM) format on a standard size map, sharing their world with 6 AI civilizations. AU 601 also imposes unusual limitations on gameplay (individually agreed to by each pair of human competitors) that eliminates or severely restricts human aggression against the AI civs.

The discussion thread leading to the AU 601 format; the discussion thread leading to the selection of civs; and the discussion thread regarding how to share game reports without spoiling others’ games can all be found in AU 601: Collection of Links and DARs. Don’t read the DAR (“during action report”) threads if you don’t want prior knowledge of the AU 601 map and circumstances.

This thread offers the single-player (“SP”) version of AU 601. Play as Rome or play as Greece; play under standard rules** or play with the AU Mod (see Apolyton University Mod: C3C version); and play any difficulty level from Regent to Sid. Appropriate DAR threads will be created very soon for your own reporting of SP successes and failures.

Due to attachment file size limitations, the saved games for all possible combinations of available variables are broken into 4 separate posts below – be sure to choose the saved game that interests you.

Enjoy!

** In both the stock rules and AU Mod versions, one unique modification has been made by the scenario’s creator Sir Ralph – in place of the default German civ, AU 601 instead employs the Germanic Tribes, led by the Sovereign Hermann. The Germanic Tribes are a Militaristic and Agricultural civ with the Germanic Rider (3.1.2, available with Horseback Riding, replaces Horseman) as its UU.

Thank you Catt!

An important reminder: This is a bonus AU course for us SP only types. The "true" course is the MP version. Since SP plays quicker than MP, anyone playing the SP has an obligation NOT to release spoiler information.

1) If your playing SP you really shouldn't post on the MP DAR threads. Limiting yourself to reading them will eliminate the possibilty of spoiler information getting posted.

2) Don't start SP DAR threads. If Catt hasn't started a DAR thread for your period yet, it's because your ahead of the MP.

Good point.

At some point in time however we should release this as a tournament game.

That maybe not for very many weeks and even months but it should be released as such sometime in the future.

More is better.

I agree that we shouldn't post a starting spot pic just yet -- the MP games are early enough that it would be spoiler info for the players and could be too easy to come across inadvertantly.

I don't plan on opening any SP DAR threads for a bit for the same reason (though if any SP player is dying to post his DARs, PM me and we'll get 'em started sooner).

I will reiterate.

I believe this should be released as a tourney and become an HOF game eventually but not now.

80% of my fun in the AU world has been reading other peoples DAR's. Its KILLING me not to read them until Motown and I get farther along.

Since I'm playing this as Rome in multiplayer, I'm going to have a go at it as Greece in single-player mode. I want to see what kind of REX I can get as Greece and how it compares with what I did with Rome. (I've played the the MP game past a point where I can see Theseus's Greek empire, so as long as I'm careful, I won't be learning anything I shouldn't.)

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I've gone ahead and opened what I intend to be the official SP DAR threads covering through the DAR 2 period (which ends with the discovery of Steam Power). I'm getting close to the end of that period in my MP game with Theseus, so I don't see much risk of these threads' revealing things MP players couldn't learn elsewhere.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

I think "AU 601 SP Version" is less confusing than having two completely separate course numbers for what are really different versions of the same game.

Suffering from ads?

and it would be too late anyway

are the DAR threads mixed for both roman and greek DARs? and the one platypus rex opened (i thought it's an SP DAR guideline and openend it... luckily no spoiler information there)... is that an official one? if no: should i remove it from the "collection of links" thread?

Put an end to popups!

I'd rather keep platypus rex's thread out of the official DAR structure. It doesn't fit the normal structure of breaking things down into multiple DARs reflecting different stages of the game, and it doesn't have the spoiler warnings that would be needed to fit it into the regular structure safely. (We might put a link to it in the appropriate regular DAR thread at some point so his information will be available to those who are interested.)

Regarding whether to have separate SP DAR threads for Greece and Rome, my thinking was that separate theads for the two civs would add clutter and, since most people have presumably already been reading the MP DARs, probably wouldn't accomplish anything all that useful. If there are people who haven't seen the map yet and don't want to be contaminated, they could take notes while they're playing but wait until they've uncovered the entire pangea (or at least enough of it to avoid spoiling their fun) before reading and posting in the DAR threads.

By the way, combined DAR threads for Greece and Rome make it a lot easier to look at and talk about differences in the two civs' situations than separate threads would.

Nathan

that discussion interests me a lot. i'm really puzzled why rome always seems to be better. imho greece has the equal starting area (at least for the first city ring), better traits, more useful UU, easier neighbors (hell, we've got NMs, MWs and GSs!).

so to all SP players: if you get to play both civs, tell us about your opinions

as the topic of AU601MP was not to attack AI cities, i presume SP would be the same (there's always a twist in AU games).

but otoh not all are playing by the those rules, so it's probably free for you to chose

More precisely, the parallel rule would be that the only cities you're allowed to capture are those in the hands of the other "player" civ (Greece or Rome, whichever you aren't). (And that territory won't really provide any benefit until Communism.)

Given the relative strength of the Greek and Roman starting positions, I think it would be best to stick with that rule in the SP version. Although I'm not inclined to follow the idea that you have to reject culture flips.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Mountain Sage posted this question in the SP DAR 1A thread, but I figured I'd respond to it here so we can get more people's input.

Nathan,

One quick question. Since not many players have posted yet in the SP section and there are several threads for SP, would it not be more 'practical' that each SP player has his own thread, from beginning to end, as the other MPs?

Sorry about you having already begun posting...

The thing I like about using a traditional AU DAR arrangement for the SP games is that it makes it easier to see how different players' games compare at the same stages. That includes not only the SP games but also comments and discussion regarding how the SP games compare with the MP games and perhaps even on how the MP games compare with each other.

In contrast, with a separate SP DAR thread for each player, there would be no central place for such comparisons. Each player's individual story would be more coherent, but I don't think the overall learning potential would be as good.

Does anyone else have any thoughts?

Also, who besides Mountain Sage and me is playing or planning to play the SP version and post DARs?

nuclear master once was talking about making stories out of good DARs. if there was a possibility of merging certain posts from each player into one thread or a summary, we can add them together afterwards. NM also said that someone volunteered as AU webmaster.
