Most people do go out and play that sport, eventually people get too old/lazy/busy to do it anymore and you cant spend all your free time playing it. And if you are still regularly playing that sport yourself, its fun to watch the professionals do it, "how can i expect a professional to do that move if i couldnt".

People regularly play online through arcade emulators, with broadband obviously.

there are slower paced games. But if its slow its too easy as you have more time to react... and people can already react and counter rediculously at this level already.... thats why more fans are pushing for faster speed to test their reflex and i guess that can alienate people who are just starting... and most fighting games are at realistic speed. quick jabs are quick enough and strong windup punches are slow enough.

I can't imagine lag being noticeble to anyone with broadband... | i dunno how much data it would be, but timing is crucial. To have everything synced perfectly is hard. And most games run in 60 frames per second. There are some game decisions that are made within 2-3/60th of a second. Those things will impact the game big time if its a matter of you being able to block after a small stun period.
there are some glitches that require less than 5/60th, or even the smallest unuit... the 1/60th of a second execution.... those things will be impossible to do with lag.
FPS is much more tolerant on lag, but even high tourney games are played on LAN.... mainly for cheats, but at least they play on minimal lag setting....
ive seen arcade emulators that you can play online. And its pretty good on lag.. Although the above problem still persists so you cant perform anything JF (Just frame) like consistently. Although I dont have any controllers or sticks for PCs, I heard you can easily get a converter to usb.
so except for the small lag, you can still enjoy online fighting if you want.
im really cruious as to how DOA:U and SF:aniversarry versions are going to be able to handle online play. Im crossing my fingers that it isnt going to be anything like Capcom VS SNK2....
