So, just to pass time while this whole mess is getting resolved...
... what has been your most memorable Civ experience? Be it SP, MP, demo game, whatever.
My most memorable games:
- A Civ1 game when ended up with a full-scale nuclear/conventional war. I was the Aztecs and conquered America, the Babylonians eventually conquered all of Asia. We had all the tech and war began, nukes were used prolifically until the world was being savaged by global warming. Devastantingly fun
- A Civ2 game which ended up with a 200-turn war, literally took me like 3 months, it was one of my first games which means I wasn't THAT good, the war started around the 1920s and I fought an alliance of 4 nations (Russia, Germany, England and the US) which had destroyed Japan and France. The war was awsome, it started with me having meager forces, my home island eventually being subjected by massive stealth bombings (it was a kind of Battle of Britain-ish moment) and the ultimate tide turning. By the time the war was over my armed forces were obscene, unequalled in over 10 years of Civ gaming: about 120 tanks, 150 Mech Infs, about 150 stealth bombers, 35 carriers, 60 AEGIS cruisers... etc etc. I remember attacking the US with 97 stealth bombers in one turn. I also remember being in school and thinking all through class what I would do in the war as soon as I got home. Sadly, I would never have such a fun time in SP Civ... ever.
- I haven't really had any memorable Civ3 games since most of them end in the medieval or industrial ages. The one I most remember was my very first game (on Chieftain no less hehehe) in which I was stuck on a small island but the AI was so crappy I went out adventuring British Empire-style. Other than that, I think the diplomatic work in the demo games have been the best. I also remember fondly the FAM 3 PBEM. It involved a very long and challanging war against BigFree (who was Greece). His Hopelites gave me and Togas a VERY hard time until we got Med. Infs. The war was so outrageously long it was a huge satisfaction to finally watch my troops enter Athens. However, my empire was at the time a runt since it had been devoted 100% to the war and I was way behind Togas and WhiteBandit. In the peace that followed I managed to turn my crappy empire into a powerhouse with a well-timed palace jump and careful micro-managing. So surprising was my growth that WB invaded me when I was weakest and was one turn from trashing my core when he made a major slip up, his Cavalry army running into my returning Med Infs which casued him losses, I raced to get Military Tradition, got Sipahis, got a golden age, built up a force of almost 40 Sipahis in an eyeblink and totally trashed his empire... then Togas RoP-raped me and the game was over
I don't play SP much anymore so other than PBEMs and demo games my Civ activity is currently at zilch.
What's obvious is I had nothing better to do during the last 20 minutes...

I loved playing with all the mods that were made for Civ2. The more into the modern age the better. None really stick out as exceptional however.
One of the first games in Civ3 that I played was with the 1.17 patch, where you were able to get armies and leaders from goodie huts. I remember one game where I played a huge pangia, monarch level, with only 3 AI civs. This was one of my first monarch level games, and it was just as I was learning about demo games. I hadn’t played much civ3 up until then, and I still did things like assume pike got a x2 defense bonus against mounted units. I was a random civ, and this time I got Persia (whose traits I soon came to love). I got about 20 goodie huts, including 3 armies & a GL that I used for the pyramids in a city that was also a goodie hut find (about 30 tiles from my capitol IIRC & horribly corrupt). With the armies filled with immortals, I marched them the 40+/- turns to attack my nearest rival, the Greek. It was a slaughter. They must not have sent out any scouting parties, as they didn’t even have iron working (at least, they kept attacking me with archers, yet they did have a hill with iron on it roaded). Next, I sent my invasion force to the far east, where the other two civs were battling each other. It turned into a bloody 3 way brawl, I had a tech lead, but with huge supply lines. They were near each other and were reinforcing themselves constantly with their huge supply bases. I never stopped in my REX, so I had over 100 cities (most were only 1 shield producers however due to the horrible corruption). Eventually, the no mans land was up to my borders, and I had just discovered the joys of tanks. The Babylonians & Germans didn’t stand a chance.
I have no idea why it is such a memorial game, probably just because I learned so much and had a blast with all the open space to REX into.
Thinking about this, I wonder if it would be neat to set this up again, but give the barbarians some real units (MI and Knights) to make them a true menace.

My most memorable civ experience, even today, remains my hotseat CivNet game against my father and my brother. I started with a really crappy starting area, my brother started with a fabulous starting area (gorgeous grasslands river valley with hills, mountains, plenty of bonus tiles... and a computer opponent on his island that he easily conquered in the midgame), and my father had an area in between (on my continent with better land ).
When I say I had a crappy starting area, I mean a peninsula off of my father's continent with little other than plains, mountains, and a few tiles of forest. No rivers, no lakes, no grasslands, not even any bonus tiles on the peninsula. I think there was a fish tile in the water near my capital (my one saving grace). I ended up using colonization and conquest of much of the southern half of the map (many many islands) to attempt to make up for my severe disadvantage at home.
It took the full course of the game for me to overcome my incredibly crappy starting area, but I eventually beat my brother to Alpha Centauri by a few turns, winning an upset victory. We were even pretty equivalent in the final stats for population, MFG, GNP, etc.... in large part due to my insane level of colonization of any little scrap of land I could grab or take by force.
That single game of CivNet lasted for months, IIRC, and winning that game remains the most memorable of my many civ experiences.
