Congratulations to all who've gotten their first medals.

I read that if US swimmer Michael Phelps were a country, he'd now be in 9th place in the overall nations' medal ranking.

How about that.

Yeah, pretty impressive what he did.

Then again, doesn't this proof that the different swimming disciplines aren't different enough?

There were more swimming events than Phelps took part in. Why did he not participate in them all? Is there any official limit, or is that simply because of one's own physical limitations?

Greek Weightlifter Stripped of Medal

By LISA ORKIN, Associated Press Writer

ATHENS, Greece - Greek weightlifter Leonidas Sampanis was stripped of his bronze medal Sunday for a doping offense, another embarrassment for the host nation.

It was the first medal to be stripped from an athlete in Athens because of doping.

Sampanis, who won a bronze medal in the 137-pound (62kg) category Monday after taking silver at the previous two Olympics, was disqualified by the International Olympic Committee (news - web sites) executive board.

On Saturday, Sampanis protested his innocence.

"Honestly, I can say that for the last 10 years, the time that I have been a weightlifter, I never used this kind of drug. I want to say to the Greek people that I swear to God and on my two children I never used this kind of drug," he said as he cried. "I want you to believe me. I want you to stand by me."

The decision was another huge blow for Greece, just four days after top sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou pulled out of the games in a scandal over missed drug tests.

Sampanis, 32, tested positive for twice the allowed amount of testosterone, the IOC (news - web sites) said. Doctors established that the testosterone came from outside the body.

Nine weightlifters, including Sampanis, have failed drug tests.

Because of the IOC decision, the fourth-place finisher, Venezuela's Israel Jose Rubio Rivero, was awarded the bronze. The gold and silver medals went to Chinese weightlifters Shi Zhiyong and Le Maosheng.

The IOC expelled Sampanis from the games and ordered the Greek Olympic Committee to return the medal immediately. Any other sanctions, including a ban, will be decided by the International Weightlifting Federation.

Greek Olympic committee officials said they do not comment on IOC decisions.

China womped Russia in womens volleyball (you've got to wonder why the russians didnt alter their high outside attacks once it was clear that they weren't gonna overpower the chinese). The great part was I got to see the whole match (for once they showed it all).

What's the deal with being so excited at having ONE medal?

Every evening, I ask my father "How many medals did we get today?", and I get an answer like "Two gold ones" or something (and this is a rather weak performance, what with the 159 gold medlas that have been given since the beginning of the games)

The marathon was dramatic.

USA women just played up to their capabilities and crushed Cuba in three (volleyball). Two points: the cuban fans were *******s and I think I've figured out why there are lots of empty seats. There are very few americans in Athens and there's only one reason why. Fear.

Are they going to advance to the next round? They were at rank 6 yesterday before the game, and they had to be at least rank 4 to advance.

Yes, with that win they advance.

A few nights ago I saw the coolest event! It's called 'Pursuit' and it's basically speed cycling around a small oval track, ie think speed skating with bikes! Very fun indeed. That's why I love the Olympics, you get to see fun sports you never really get to see anywhere else!

I'd like to point out that my lame country is beating Canada. We have two gold medals in real events, and Johnny Maple Leaf only has one in emasculated gymnastics.
