Chapter 8 - Epilogue
Pope Pius III allowed Machiavelli to try his method once more. If this time the method would prove unsuccessful, it would be Machiavelli’s turn to burn.
As the cardinals entered, Machiavelli immediately noticed Cardinal Wolsey wasn’t wearing his hat. He spoke out of course and accused the cardinal.
“I lost my hat”, Wolsey replied.
“Off course you did. You lost it in the cathedral two days ago, fatso”, Machiavelli insisted.
“Now just a moment, we need some other proof”, Cardinal Farnese demanded.
Machiavelli suggested that Woolsey’s foot be compared with the footprints in the cathedral. They went there, compared the footprints and they matched.
“All right all right, I confess”, Wolsey surrendered.
“Why did you do it?” Cesare Borgia asked.
“What do you think why? Of all people you are asking me why. For money and power of course. To be elected new pope.”
Pope Pius III crossed himself.
“And know I didn’t kill you just cause you were old and ill. I waited for your natural death. But I wouldn’t have waited too long.”
“Burn the dog”, Cardinal Giovanni de Medici concluded the discussion.
Two hours later duke o’ york was burnt at stake before the cheering crowd. Curiously, God made the rain stop shortly before the execution. And peace returned to Rome with murders becoming sporadic like they always were, now when both serial killers were finally dead.
